Eat Well For Less? BBC1

They are looking at a family food spend.

Family of 5 is spending well over national average - about £220pw.

THey are being slated for buying "expensive" sliced cheese. I'm a pretty savy shopper and I will buy sliced cheese and grated cheese after working out that they usually DON'T cost more per kilo to buy than a block.

Also apparently Greg Wallace is going to argue that margarine is not an unhealthy choice compared to butter! WTF? Apparently as it has less sat fat it is "healthier".

Watching with interest.

It was brief and they didn't seem to linger on it - I wonder if it was a disaster! or maybe I've imagined it.

SoupDragon · 02/10/2015 19:36

Just looked on I player and he cooks a brunch of butter beans and baked eggs, just before the tinned fish factory segment.

SoupDragon · 02/10/2015 19:37

TBH though, I don't have a problem with one person being main cook if the other does most of some other chore - maybe he clears away and outs the dishwasher on. A proper partnership is doing the jobs you are best at or enjoy the most IMO.

Just caught up with it - she really annoyed me. How can you not have a clue you're spending that much when you shop several times a week and a cheap shop is 110 quid?!?!?

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/10/2015 00:09

I did find her 'ooooooh' round the shop funny

They were a nice family and nice they all are together as a family
/ but easier with older kids

Can't believe they have never had a holiday yet spend £16k on food every year

Lightbulbon · 03/10/2015 07:12

Oh another family who are just like us! Blush

I go to the supermarket maybe 3 times a week and just pick up what I fancy. Our bills aren't as high as theirs, we don't buy prepared veg. But we do have the expensive options at both ends of the healthy scale eg wheatgerm and unused quinoa but also supermarket pizzas and the odd curry/kiev.
We were spending £600 PCM for a smaller/younger family until we recently cut down and started making some trips to aldi and doing some online shops.

But I wouldn't eat any of those meals in that episode let alone my dcs. Ds & I especially can't tolerate lots of different tastes and textures mixed together which is what all these cheap meals seem to consist of.

Eating every meal out of a bowl is what brought me to this thread! I'm watching this on repeat this afternoon and the bowl thing just screamed out at me! Like babies eating from bowls where all your food is mashed up together! Urgh!!

cheapskatemum · 04/10/2015 17:20

I thought, for the first time this series (and the last, truth be told) that what the kids said about the food seemed scripted. It was when the little boy said he liked the chard and the Mum said he didn't have to say that if he didn't like it, so then he admitted that he didn't actually like it. DSs tell me that's how they make TOWIE and Made in Chelsea. They listen to an actual conversation, then script it and film it again. Don't know why I felt I had to post about this!

Also - chick peas don't have gluten in.

Just watched the last episode. Lovely family I thought, and recipes looked really nice too.

fuzzpig · 04/10/2015 21:28

Although my DCs wouldn't eat most of them either.

Titsalinabumsquash · 05/10/2015 18:22

I love this show, not because it has any amazing insights but I am nosey and like to see how other people eat Blush

Anyway, I made the tuna burgers tonight and the whole family wolfed them down, they were really nice. I halved the recipe so only used 2 tins of tuna and served them in rolls with homemade coleslaw and sweet potato wedges and salad. 5 clean plates. Smile
