Eat Well For Less? BBC1

They are looking at a family food spend.

Family of 5 is spending well over national average - about £220pw.

THey are being slated for buying "expensive" sliced cheese. I'm a pretty savy shopper and I will buy sliced cheese and grated cheese after working out that they usually DON'T cost more per kilo to buy than a block.

Also apparently Greg Wallace is going to argue that margarine is not an unhealthy choice compared to butter! WTF? Apparently as it has less sat fat it is "healthier".

Watching with interest.

£259 on one shop. OMG

PurpleBurtle · 17/09/2015 20:29

This programme winds me up so much, still riled about the whole margarine/butter thing

redpriestandmozart · 17/09/2015 20:39

OMG just watching this now, over £300 per week on food! How on earth do you spend that amount of money on food? So much cheese!

Ubik1 · 17/09/2015 20:42

These people shouldn't be allowed to go shopping on their own.

Just make them shop in Lidl. Problem solved.

HippyChickMama · 17/09/2015 20:44

I could easily eat that much cheese! I wish they'd stop referring to drinks as 'healthier' because they're full of artificial sweetener. And, I'm confused by the cooking of the beef in beer, I thought the dm was gluten free?

Ledkr · 17/09/2015 20:48

Why is Greg Wallace so over excited?
He's like a bafoon on coke!!

lastqueenofscotland · 17/09/2015 20:50

Haha Greg said I like a peen... Childish me.

redpriestandmozart · 17/09/2015 20:51

Oh wise up... showing the veg some love!!! Greg Wallace gets on my tits..

Yes shop in Lidl, they couldn't even taste the difference half of the time. Carrots with fluffy bits, we have guinea pigs and still don't buy fluffy bits!

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/09/2015 21:00

Haven't read the other replies yet

But omfg @ £17k a year on food !!!

And though saved them £150 ish a week - so shopping was £200 ish that's still much more then the a average family of 3 adults and one child would spend

Ledkr · 17/09/2015 21:09

Dh calls Greg "zippy"

janethegirl2 · 17/09/2015 21:14

I much prefer to have sugar in my drinks than artificial sweetener.
However how can 4 people spend that much money on food in a week?
Even including a serious wine expenditure I'm nowhere near close and I do spend money like it's water when I feel like it (obviously not all the time tho')

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/09/2015 21:45

I am entrigued to try lidl Mayo

I shop here but often buy names brands there as cheaper

Love Hellmans Mayo so be interesting to see what lidl tastes like

Their salad cream is Cheap and not swapping from Heinz !!!!!

emotionsecho · 17/09/2015 21:53

The main problem with the family in this episode was food hoarding, they didn't need to buy most of what they did as the fridge and cupboards were already full to bursting, that was the real issue that needed addressing.

janethegirl2 · 17/09/2015 21:57

Aldi mayo is good, but I have to drive a significant distance to my nearest Aldi so it's not such a real saving!

redpriestandmozart · 17/09/2015 21:59

My small problem is food hoarding to some degree as our house caters for a vagan, a vegetarian, 2 meat eaters and an a granny (traditional meat 2 veg) cupboards are full but our weekly shop is less than £60.

janethegirl2 · 17/09/2015 22:14

I think it depends on how far you live from a 24 hour supermarket as to how much food is sensible to keep in the house.
If you are within 1-2 miles it's not sensible, but if it's a round trip of 25 miles or more, a decent store cupboard makes sense.
And if it's 50 miles or more, it's essential Grin

goodasitgets · 17/09/2015 22:55

How are they not about 30 stone?! A carton of cranberry a day?!

emotionsecho · 17/09/2015 23:01

jane that family had enough in the cupboards for at least a month, even she admitted she didn't need to buy any more jam for six months! Yes, a monthly shop is sensible if you live a fair distance from a supermarket, but this family shopped weekly and admitted that they had butchers, etc., a short walk away from their house.

myotherusernameisbetter · 17/09/2015 23:25

I do tend to stock up on some cupboard items in the winter as we have been snowed in before so it's handy to know that you have enough to last a week or so of basics such as pasta, sauce, beans, flour to make bread and long life milk and some tinned or frozen fruit and veg. She was ending up chucking out half of what she had bought as it was out of date - i tend to try to use up our stockpile in the spring :)

I can confirm that Sainsburys taste the difference jam is the dog's danglies though.

BobandKate0 · 18/09/2015 00:13

Yeah, not a very good episode by my rough math, they could save what a grand if they have lentil shepherds pie every week Hmmand jam three times daily.
What if their bus fare goes up 10% during the year ? the saving will be wiped out.
Bit miffed that greg was frowning at the vine tomatoes - when he did a prog about how nice they are over the imported cheap ones.
The problem with jam is that the jars are too big to use up before it starts to go off- surely they could do small jars in packs of ten.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/09/2015 00:28

Not the amount the lady was spreading on her toast!!

Prob get through a jar a week Grin

ShadowLine · 18/09/2015 02:28

I'm sure that Morrison's used to have tiny pots of jam (like the sort you get in hotel breakfasts) in a sort of pick and mix display in the jam aisle. But it's been a while since I shopped in Morrisons.

LovelyFriend · 18/09/2015 10:19

I make my own mayo now - it last perfectly well for a week & then I make some more. With a stick blender it takes just a minute or 2 to make.
I make it in a big old Lidl olive jar, so can just put the lid straight on and into the fridge:

TheSpottedZebra · 18/09/2015 10:42

Bob jam doesn't go off quickly -it's a preserve, it's built to last!

myotherusernameisbetter · 18/09/2015 11:02

I agree she was spreading on loads - jam keeps in the fridge for a long time though.

I thought it was really funny watching the little girl in the last episode when they were all outside eating the braised beef dish and declaring it brilliant - she was just huffing over her plate and clearly wasn't having it! :o

In the other meals they had focused on her clear enjoyment of them.
