They seem so used to be entertained rather than taught.

OP posts:
dillite · 11/08/2015 21:32

He hasn't left the room and they are already fooling around!

CookieDoughKid · 11/08/2015 21:33

Really - the issue is not so much the method of teaching. Both Eastern and Western teaching have their merits and if this was a serious documentary, it would have been portrayed in a different light. What would be just as interesting, would be to have a lens view into homes of Eastern and Western families. To see how the parents bring the kids up and how that impacts into society today.

The issue here is the behaviour of these kids - which makes great TV. I would love to know what their parents think seeing their children on TV like that.

esiotrot2015 · 11/08/2015 21:33

Exactly
The narrator just said in China the teachers never need to raise their voices !

dillite · 11/08/2015 21:35

So is grammar not taught here then?

dillite · 11/08/2015 21:40

Oh they should bring those dumplings over here, I will actually appreciate them. I love dumplings. Oh how I fancy a dim sum now.

Hulababy · 11/08/2015 21:42

I would like to see this in reverse.

Send British teachers to China to see if the Chinese students can 'do' education the British way.

So, can the Chinese children handle
Some independent learning and not just rely on rote learning for example.

dillite · 11/08/2015 21:42

Oh I remember classroom cleaning! Never that badly though. Wtf have they done to the floor? They call that floor washing?

starlight2007 · 11/08/2015 21:44

Well the mum clearly thinks it is ok for a child to take kettle to school

HueyMorganismyboyfriend · 11/08/2015 21:46

Josh's mother is a disgrace

ValancyJane · 11/08/2015 21:47

I bet some of their parents are seriously unimpressed watching this, I would be mortified!

However that said... His mother LET him take the kettle in?! What the actual fuck? And had a laugh with him over the draconian nature of it rather than discussing learning about how another culture does things and the importance of still showing respect to the teacher? I may have just shouted at the telly a little!

Boosiehs · 11/08/2015 21:50

Jeezsus. Those Chinese teachers deserve a medal for not throttling the little shits!

Phoebe singing in class??!? Wtaf?

BlossomTang · 11/08/2015 21:50

The HT is seriously unprofessional talking about the chinese teachers like that. He should be addressing his pupils behaviour instead of condoning them

Boosiehs · 11/08/2015 21:51

The lack of respect is breathtaking.

ValancyJane · 11/08/2015 21:52

Yes, they're picking on you for no reason whatsoever Phoebe. Sure... Hmm

esiotrot2015 · 11/08/2015 21:52

That poor teacher :-(

HueyMorganismyboyfriend · 11/08/2015 21:52

I know Blossom. Totally unprofessional. This guy is being paid to run his school.

vez123 · 11/08/2015 21:53

I think the programme is flawed as the students know it's just an experiment and there are cameras so they are not taking it seriously and they are acting up.
The teaching may not suit the students but now they are really taking the piss.

G1veMeStrength · 11/08/2015 21:54

I feel so sorry for the Chinese teachers.

jigglebum · 11/08/2015 21:55

Having taught Chinese kids in a UK setting (in an international school) I don't agree that we should be aiming to copy the Chinese at all. It might work for some maths and science but in the languages, humanities and arts give me a British/European student any day. I like students to think for themselves, ask questions and come up with new ideas - they can do this and still show respect for teachers if it is done the right way.

These Bohunt students in their normal classes would generally be well behaved - you can see it in the small clips they have shown of the English teacher's lessons. You cannot expect to teach in one culture as you would in another - it is not just about education, it is family, culture and social/political systems of the country. Also the student know the Chinese teachers are only there for a few weeks so they don't build up any relationships with them - it is like being a supply teacher!

I wouldn't want to follow the Chinese methods anyhow. As other posters have said the Chinese school day can be 12 hours long and then tutor time on top of that - I don't want that for my children or class sizes of 50. Having said that my south Korean students told me they stay in class till 10 pm some nights and then spend all holidays studying at academies - which is madness!

dillite · 11/08/2015 21:57

Jesus Christ the disrespect from students, parents and even bloody HT is just astonishing! Experiment or not, how hard can it be to be respectful?

areyoubeingserviced · 11/08/2015 21:57

I agree that the HT is an utter disgrace.
Really unprofessional.

Hulababy · 11/08/2015 21:58

Iirr there is a mum with children at this school and the children involved have been very much encouraged to act up.

ValancyJane · 11/08/2015 21:59

Jiggle I agree I don't think the Chinese methods are best. However a bit more of a focused and respectful attitude and embedded work ethic wouldn't go amiss in most UK students!

dillite · 11/08/2015 22:02

That mother wondering why it's the parents who should be thinking about discipline? Errrm, perhaps because it's her job?

BlossomTang · 11/08/2015 22:04

The parents seem more appreciative of the chinese teachers than the HT. I suspect most went to school in 70s and 80s when discipline was tighter and sanctions such as instant detentions, corporeal punishment and expulsions were freely meted out. I also seem to acknowledge their Dcs will be competing globally for jobs. The HTs agenda is to make himself and his school look good.
