They seem so used to be entertained rather than taught.

OP posts:
woodhill · 05/08/2015 09:25

when I worked in a PS there was someof this but obviously alot more interaction from students and a slower pace.

I think the students were reasonable. some students I have encountered in another school would have been much worse

woodhill · 05/08/2015 09:27

surely this is rooted in communism anyway so everyone is the same and no one thinks for themselves. is the exercise from those days?

absolutelynotfabulous · 05/08/2015 09:41

woodhill I think it is, yes. Communism treats all the same; our culture is more individualised. I think they mentioned that in the prog.

I think noblegiraffe has a point. They're in school longer, and have a structured homework programme on top of that, it appears. All supported by a culture of hard work and achievement.

StitchingMoss · 05/08/2015 09:52

I agree about the fitness - some of those kids are horribly unfit.

The teachers did explain that they don't differentiate their lessons in China and don't have any behavioural issues - I do t think English teachers teaching in China would teach us very much at all tbh.

I used to teach Y6 and even then behaviour management is one of the toughest things to get right. Interestingly I was watching that super nanny thing before I watched this - those spoilt 3 year olds turn into these badly behaved teenagers. Parents have completely lost their way in teaching kids to behave and teachers pay the price.

Luvverly · 05/08/2015 11:40

Without the silly histrionics. TV would not have put it on. TV thrives on drama and tabloid publicity for their programmes. The Chinese have nothing to teach us on education. But we have a lot to teach them, 12 hour day....bonkers.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/08/2015 12:30

You only need to look at the stats in western countries like UK, USA . children of immigrant Chinese do stunningly well at school and at have highly well paid jobs. ALL my Chinese friends in UK have degrees and are doctors/lawyerslawyers etc. I was on an £80k a year salary by age 30 working in the city. It comes fromfrom the home. We aim for nothing less than A grade. I will need to dig out the academic paper where they surveyed ethnic minorities in western countries but certainly, Chinese are getting the best grades/jobs. We are now seeing certain African ethnicities working their way up. what's common is strict disciplinediscipline, grittiness and aiming to be the best is core. Excuse my grammar. Crappy phone!

janetandroysdaughter · 05/08/2015 14:25

Luvverly do you really think they have nothing to teach us but we have loads to teach them? I agree we could teach them how to create lessons that foster independent and critical thinking. We could teach them that a happy, unstressed child who gains Bs is better than a neurotic tearful one who gains straight A*s.

But from them we could learn that teachers are there to teach not to crowd control; that physical fitness is an essential part of our learning; that the vast majority of students could achieve far more if they applied themselves.

My DC go to an academically selective school where standards are high, but left to their own devices, they'd do nothing but play GTA all day in the summer. If nothing were demanded of them at home or at school, then they'd under achieve. Our C at GCSE standard is a pretty low bar to set.

CookieDoughKid · 05/08/2015 14:26

And yes, I'm aiming for Oxbridge for my kids as will every Chinese parent you meet at your school. To us, its the norm. Our kids might not get into Oxbridge but we damn will try our best to get there.

Snoozebox · 05/08/2015 14:42

Parental aspiration is an important part of the difference in the childrens' attitude and behaviour in the classroom but there's also something else going on. I thought the parts of the programme which touched upon the wider cultural/societal differences were the most interesting. China has a more authoritarian culture which means that young people are brought up to submit unquestioningly to their parents' and teachers' instructions - contrast that with our own society which arguably is more youth- and trend-focused than adult-focused. Young people have far more of a voice here - and dominate social change - this might be good for some things in society, but doesn't lead to exemplary exam results.

GarlicDoughballsInGlitter · 05/08/2015 17:38

I do wonder what the dc would think of this show, just seeing what school is like compared to here. What age do you think it is appropriate for?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/08/2015 18:09

Ds's school is very sporty, all the kids are timed etc and know who is first, second, third etc. I'm quite impressed with how much they do although seriously glad ds is sporty as it must be hell if you're not . There also seems to be a huge amount of focus on academic grades too and what levels they are within the class. I thought that was the norm now.

Guysecretan · 06/08/2015 20:41

It was so funny when that girl said 'he thinks I'm fit' and then that boy said most guys do.

SunshineAndShadows · 07/08/2015 11:08

I've taught at university level in China. The prevalence of students on their mobiles in lessons and not paying attention is significant so I do think lots of chinese students also switch off from 'chalk and talk' they're also only focussed in passing exams not learning more broadly about a subject. However i've found once they get into the rythmn of interaction and discussion their attention levels soar. They've often never experienced any interactivity in their lessons before

TheAmyrlin · 11/08/2015 21:14

Anyone watching?

dillite · 11/08/2015 21:18

I just tuned in haven't had seen it before. Those kids are horrible! Do pupils ewalky behave this badly at school? And so disrespectful? I would be terrified if that was my child. And I thought we were badly behaved at school!

And how do the Chinese students see that tiny writing from the back of the classroom?

dillite · 11/08/2015 21:20

Why are they all wearing tracksuits?

TheAmyrlin · 11/08/2015 21:23

The behaviour is much worse on this week's episode. Though I think some of it us playing up to the cameras.

dillite · 11/08/2015 21:23

And what's with all the coffee mugs on the tables?

starlight2007 · 11/08/2015 21:23

yes watching..first one I have seen... It is quite interesting

dillite · 11/08/2015 21:27

Why aren't they allowed to discipline the Chinese way for full authenticity? Surely they don't just stand there all useless in China?

esiotrot2015 · 11/08/2015 21:29

I just don't think the students in Chiba would dare to act that way
Their parents have instilled a level of respect that we just don't have over here :-(

noblegiraffe · 11/08/2015 21:30

I think the point is that in China the kids don't piss around so the teachers have no behaviour management skills as they don't need them.
