I am so happy that this is returning after all the doubt (cancelled, would it be available online only etc, etc)!!

I will be lining up my craft red ales and settling back for a great evening's entertainment. Anyone else care to pull up a pew and join this thread?

No need to join Amazon Prime for this! Glad I saw it as I miss so many series as by the time I'm aware of them, the first episode is no longer available on catchup.

Train plot excellent - even if the Necropolis Railway had to be diverted to East London! Enjoying having a show with a variety of good female characters and especially Victorian ones who aren't all ladies or whores. And eye candy.

OnlyLovers · 03/08/2015 10:08

I liked the first episode but I can't remember ANYTHING about the end of the last series.

Why have Reid and Jackson fallen out?

Are we supposed to know when Jackson took up with Hermione thingy and who she is and how serious it is or isn't?

Why did Bennett go away? Why has he come back? Are he and Reid not getting on either? All I remember from the last one is a boxing match.

When did Reid's wife die?

Has he moved to a bigger posher house now he's been promoted?

In fact EVERYONE seems to have gone up in the world; Jackson has more salubrious lodgings now and Long Susan has obviously turned into a philanthropist.

sanfairyanne · 03/08/2015 10:42

Grin me too OnlyLovers

obviously spent more time on the eye candy than the plot

OnlyLovers · 03/08/2015 10:48

TBH I don't really fancy any of the main characters, although I sort of love Reid.

I did fancy Joseph Mawle as whatsisname, Bennett's opponent in the boxing match. Hot stuff. Amazing eyes.

But I can't remember what happened to his character. Confused

squoosh · 03/08/2015 15:04

Inspector Jedidiah Shine was a great baddie. They should bring him back as he's still alive, the last time we saw him was when Bennett decided not to finish him off even though Reid was warbling 'KILLLLLL HIMMMMMM'.

OnlyLovers · 03/08/2015 16:02

Is he? So there's a possibility of more of him and his luvverly eyes?

sanfairyanne · 03/08/2015 16:03

i just love the mutton chops Grin

CoogerAndDark · 03/08/2015 16:34

Do the script writers compete to put ludicrously Po faced dialogue into Reid's mouth?

OnlyLovers · 03/08/2015 16:36

He seems to be more pompous this series so far.

I hope he cracks a smile soon. Or is he weighed down with the grief of his wife's death?

And why has Matthew Macfadyen got long dark lush eyelashes like a fucking Jersey cow when mine are wispy and balding and I have to use a litre of mascara? Envy

squoosh · 03/08/2015 16:38

He's got such a sweet, unpompous smile too!

Yay! Ripper Street returning on Fri @ 9pm on BBC1!
CoogerAndDark · 03/08/2015 17:08

I know. I want a guest appearance on the next series. Woman Who Randomly Tickles Reid......

Valsoldknickers · 08/08/2015 01:54

Had to record to tonight as friends came over for dinner. Looking forward to catching up!

BoyScout · 08/08/2015 07:02

Can we talk about the end of last nights episode?

Because that was some of the most tense, jaw-dropping TV I have ever seen.

Tiredemma · 08/08/2015 07:53

Last nights episode literally had me sat up and hanging off the edge of the sofa.

WaitingForFrostyMornings · 08/08/2015 08:04

The end of last nights episode was horrible. I couldn't watch it even hearing it made me feel sick (I hate anything gorey).

I completely understand why he did it. Long Susans got a lot of explaining to do. I genuinely hope Reid gets her and Jackson doesn't stop him.

whoseafraidofnaomiwolf · 08/08/2015 08:33

OMG!! where can it go from here? I can't believe it. Surely Edmund will be hung for murder (though Long Susan should be for it was her lies that drove him to it)? I'm still stunned by the events of last nights episode - I even woke up thinking about it!

WaitingForFrostyMornings · 08/08/2015 08:39

He has to be hung. Surely that's why Bennett is back and been promoted?

He will have to pursue him and he will have to see the law is followed to the letter by prosecuting him.

I imagine Susan will produce Alice to say Reid had no motive and that he is a cold blooded murderer clearing the way for her and that horrible little mans plans.

diddl · 08/08/2015 08:46

I love this series.

Edmund Reid & Fred Abberline-real people!

MorrisZapp · 08/08/2015 08:53

Ripper Street is quite frankly the best telly of all time.

I love Jackson's new lady friend, but Rose and tiny face Susan get right on my wick.

whoseafraidofnaomiwolf · 08/08/2015 09:24

No no no - they can't hang beautiful Matthew McFayden, they just can't. It's all so wrong. I reeeeally hope they've got some shit-hot script writers who can somehow find a way to make it right (believably).

"Inspector. You have five minutes. I can give you no more"

Those words are haunting me....

BoyScout · 08/08/2015 12:17

But what is Susan playing at? Through the first two series she was always sort of the good guy, though quite ruthless. This one, she just seems really evil. There can't be any redemption for her character after this, whatever happens.

BoyScout · 08/08/2015 12:17

The solicitor is a brilliant villain as well. Sinister and weedy all at the same time.

whoseafraidofnaomiwolf · 08/08/2015 14:20

I know, Susan seems to have undergone a character change this series, but whatever she did there's no going back for Edmund now. My heart is breaking for him... His daughter is alive and well (ish) and he was within touching distance of that knowledge, and having his wounds healed, but now it's all just imploded. It's a long time since I've been so traumatised by the telly ;)

Valsoldknickers · 08/08/2015 22:20

I just watched last night's episode, it was shocking and incredibly sad.

Long Susan is an evil bitch and Anton du Beke's great great grandfather is a horrible little weasel.

They will have to get their comeuppance if there's any justice! Poor Edmund Sad

OP posts:
NotCitrus · 08/08/2015 22:41

What does Capshaw have over Susan?

Poor Reid - surely they can't kill Matthew Macfadyen off like they did in Spooks?
DP thinks it's jumped the shark with daughter coming back from the dead after previously is she, isn't she drowned, but the quality of the plot and script is still working for me.

Annie Cobden was a real counsellor too - she was a Suffragette and her diaries from her time in prison for that were published a few years ago. She was a friend of William Morris.
