Old Baldie is back, I'm afraid. However, the format for the first round is a bit different.

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b055tb4z

Firstly, the contestants are given just one hour and fifteen minutes to dazzle the judges when they are asked to cook their calling card, a practised dish that represents just who they are as a cook and showcases their talent. After tasting all five dishes, John and Gregg, without telling each other, each pick their favourite dish. If they both choose the same dish then they will select their second preference. The two lucky cooks will be safe - for now - and sail straight through to the third test.

The remaining three contestants must cook again in a twist on the infamous invention test - the reinvention test. The hopefuls are given the main ingredient from their calling card dish, as well as access to the larder. Using that same ingredient, they must reinvent the dish to create a brand new plate of food that will sway the judges and earn them a place in the next round. They have one hour and fifteen minutes to cook a dish good enough to keep them in the competition. The stakes are high it's the end of the road for one person after this cook-off, as one of the amateurs will be sent home.

The four remaining cooks now have one more challenge standing between them and a quarter-final place. To earn their place they have to cook an impressive menu that will excite not just John and Gregg but also some very special guests. Once again, some of the competition's most inspiring winners and finalists return to judge the food of this year's new contenders to the throne.

In tonight's heat the contestants must attempt to impress three MasterChef Champions - 2009 champion Mat Follas, 2010 champion Dhruv Baker and 2012 champion Shelina Permalloo are back to give their verdict.

After the four hopefuls have cooked, John and Gregg will decide which two will take the next step in the competition and go through to Friday's quarter-final.

Think the pink frogspawn sealed her fate.

LosingNemo · 12/03/2015 19:59

Who does Kathryn look like? She looks like an actress but I can't think who. It's driving me mad!

hideandseekpig · 12/03/2015 21:26

I know I'm going to repeat what others have said but yes the stupid whispering between contestants is driving me mad! I hate it!

Also smears on plates are really annoying. I always think it's just not enough if it tastes nice I'd want big pile of it not one smear. But then same with their teeny tiny gravy sorry jus jugs...I would need a few more of those too!

And stop putting avacados and Peppers in puddings it's stupid. What is wrong with a nice apple crumble? Or sticky toffee pudding?

Moustache man is intensely irritating. And smug.

Anyway. That's my rant over - loving it so far! Grin

LaVolcan · 12/03/2015 21:35

Now, I quite like the whispering between the contestants. As for moustache man - has he escaped from a 1910's Music Hall, do you think?

Ellenora5 · 12/03/2015 22:09

I reckon Tony the Tache has peaked too early (could be wishful thinking)

Agree about the puddings, no need for some of that nonsense

I would have preferred nutella bread and butter man to go home

LosingNemo, she reminds me of Pam Ferris, hopefully she won't turn up in a habit with a newly delivered baby Grin mind you that would be funny.

Hideandseekpig, my 23 year old said the same about the gravy, he always has lots of gravy and if we are out always asks for extra, sometimes his dinner is like soup but he likes what he likes and was astounded and shocked at that little jug between three people, he thought it was very unfair Smile

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/03/2015 22:20

I am not sure which freaks me out more - Jay Rayner's resting face, which looks like he is smelling a particularly noxious fart, or when he tries to smile.

hideandseekpig · 12/03/2015 22:29

ellenora5 I'm with your son on that one I'd be very upset by that amount between 3!

squoosh · 13/03/2015 16:46

Watching Super Mario Tony with his rabbit done 968 ways reminded me of the Chas and Dave song 'rabbit, rabbit, rabbit, rabbit........'

squoosh · 13/03/2015 16:47

STDG apparently Jay Rayner is considered to be somewhat of a stud on this thread.

The world is a very confusing place.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/03/2015 17:26

A stud? >

Unless you mean a small, metal thing that should be hammered into wood? WinkGrin

Are there THREEE episodes a week?

Really?

Trills · 13/03/2015 23:21

"Rabbit a numberof ways" from Mr Moustache sounds ike
4 ways if everything goes well
3 ways more realistically
if everything goes to shit, 2 is still a number of ways

Roussette · 14/03/2015 07:23

hesterton I nearly spat out my early morning cuppa reading this from you "I think Greg's gurning may be down to new teeth." Grin Grin

Mr Moustachio irritated the hell out of me again in a tortuous way but he's still in so I will have to suck it up (ewwww Grin) He just comes across as smug smug smug. When they were deciding who was to go, I was imagining his face if his name was called out!

I like Kathryn but not sure she's up to it and she reminds me of not Pam Ferris but another actress and as soon as I read Pam Ferris, I forgot who!

Roussette · 14/03/2015 08:11

Not Nerys... and it's really eating away at me who she looks like !

eddiemairswife · 14/03/2015 09:05

Mary from Corrie.

LaVolcan · 14/03/2015 09:42

Who she looks like is not eating me, but my big question is 'Did she buy her top from M & S?'. It looks like one I nearly bought but didn't.

squoosh · 14/03/2015 12:14

My big question is why does she keep poking her fingers around in the food?

GrouchyKiwi · 17/03/2015 12:55

I've just caught up. Not a very charming bunch so far, though I like Kathryn.

I do like this new brief task thingy. But cooking shows overuse the word "brief" (or should I just stop watching the Great British Menu?)

I'm looking forward to the guest judges on the next episode (tonight?) I love Ping and Thomasina Myers.

Roussette · 17/03/2015 18:12

I thought it was on tonight, but no... it's wed, thurs, friday this week. I do wish they would stop messing about with the days they put it on, most confusing!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/03/2015 18:13

Bastards! I was all set up to watch it tonight. I suppose Comic Relief messed things up last week.

No Star for you, BBC schedulers!

Jacana · 17/03/2015 18:58

So now we've got Back in time for Dinner, at 8.00 bbc2. Tonight 1950, no fridge and rationing. Something made with dried eggs, anyone? Or a meat pudding with suet pastry and boiled in a tea towel? And proper sago pud or rice pud for afters, perhaps!

Marjal12 · 17/03/2015 22:43

I tried, but I just can't watch Masterchef UK any more, and I used to love it. The Australian one is just so much better - more contestants, better food, more drama, better celebrity chefs, and better judges. It's being repeated daily on TLC at the mo - I'm rewatching a series I've already seen, and still loving it!
