Old Baldie is back, I'm afraid. However, the format for the first round is a bit different.

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b055tb4z

Firstly, the contestants are given just one hour and fifteen minutes to dazzle the judges when they are asked to cook their calling card, a practised dish that represents just who they are as a cook and showcases their talent. After tasting all five dishes, John and Gregg, without telling each other, each pick their favourite dish. If they both choose the same dish then they will select their second preference. The two lucky cooks will be safe - for now - and sail straight through to the third test.

The remaining three contestants must cook again in a twist on the infamous invention test - the reinvention test. The hopefuls are given the main ingredient from their calling card dish, as well as access to the larder. Using that same ingredient, they must reinvent the dish to create a brand new plate of food that will sway the judges and earn them a place in the next round. They have one hour and fifteen minutes to cook a dish good enough to keep them in the competition. The stakes are high it's the end of the road for one person after this cook-off, as one of the amateurs will be sent home.

The four remaining cooks now have one more challenge standing between them and a quarter-final place. To earn their place they have to cook an impressive menu that will excite not just John and Gregg but also some very special guests. Once again, some of the competition's most inspiring winners and finalists return to judge the food of this year's new contenders to the throne.

In tonight's heat the contestants must attempt to impress three MasterChef Champions - 2009 champion Mat Follas, 2010 champion Dhruv Baker and 2012 champion Shelina Permalloo are back to give their verdict.

After the four hopefuls have cooked, John and Gregg will decide which two will take the next step in the competition and go through to Friday's quarter-final.

So you did Halsall! What a fancy name posh gardening woman has! Grin

Halsall · 01/04/2015 21:01

It's fresh in my mind because I think I saw her in the John Lewis cafe recently not stalking at all, oh no

squoosh · 01/04/2015 21:03

Gardening woman is v calm and soothing though. Cousin Arabella is..............less calm.

BigRedBall · 01/04/2015 21:03

Ugh I did not take a liking to Arabella. Hoity toity drama queen. And she didn't even apologise to the judges for being late! [shocked].

Why do they bother timing it if you can be 10 minutes late and still go through?

Ellenora5 · 01/04/2015 21:17

I wanted Ross to go through, maybe they will bring him back, he would have walked it if he had been up against some of the other contestants we've seen.

I think the same dementedma, it's not very fair

I don't know Footle but it takes ages for me refresh the page, that's why I'm always way behind everyone else.

LaVolcan · 01/04/2015 21:37

I didn't think it fair to put Arabella through either - they could all have done a bit better with an extra ten minutes.

Greg & John should have told her to serve up what she was ready with when the time was up- which would have been nothing, and she would have been eliminated.

Only just caught up on iPlayer .. I've been laughing at some of your comments!

thought young girl was sweet and lovely and I liked what she cooked.

I did laugh at the duck breast plonked on the plate with the peach and champagne sauce as that is exactly what my food would look like - in other words, no finesse!

Arabella annoyed me. Ten minutes is a helluva time extra. Imagine if they all got that so thought it was totally unfair to put her through and that means I hope she does that next time, because Greg 'n John can't allow her an extra ten mins again. There would be an outcry -from me--

StayingSamVimesGirl · 02/04/2015 10:23

Squoosh - I have to take slight - very slight, I promise - issue with you about cheese and fish. In general, I think you are right, and I am sure you are right about cheesy biscuits with fish - but my mum used to do smoked haddock with rice and cheese sauce, and it is utterly delicious!

Once, when I'd been ill, dh offered to make it for me - it was the only thing I could think of that I wanted to eat - and he made it with packet cheese sauce! I nearly LTB!!

The cheesy biscuits look like Nigella's parmesan shortbreads - and if so, they are wonderful! If I make them, I have to hide some, so there are some left for me, otherwise the family snarf the lot! They are pretty easy to make too.

nochocolateforlentteacake · 02/04/2015 10:38

I don't think it was fair that someone could be ten minutes late and not be penalised. Its a matter of life and death with chocolate fondant or cooking meat!

TrulyTurtles · 02/04/2015 12:38

Yeah but you know what, another ten mins would not have helped that duck and shite on a plate. I've reported me own post calling Gregg A Bad Word, even fir him 'twas a touch harsh. Never MNet whilst drinking gin.

StayingSamVimesGirl · 02/04/2015 12:59

"Never MNet whilst drinking gin."

The site's going to be awfu' quiet if that catches on, Truly!! Easter Grin

TrulyTurtles · 02/04/2015 13:46

True dat Sam. Dh called him that Word not once but three times last night. He never says it (as an insult)

Roussette · 02/04/2015 14:38

MN is going to pot if we can't drink gin whilst watching pap Grin

YesIDidMeanToBeSoRudeActually · 02/04/2015 19:20

Gregg is intensely irritating. I feel that John (which Mner was it whose Dh thought he was called Jonty Rhodes, btw Smile ) is also becoming much more irritating too - they are almost becoming caricatures of themselves.

Maybe I'm getting old

Who is ready for fish and biscuits tonight?!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/04/2015 19:40

I'm ready for a Victoria sponge cake where the filling is cauliflower puree and fig chutney and the topping is rock salt. Easter Grin

Roussette · 02/04/2015 19:49

With a side order of beetroooot done three ways Easter Grin

YesIDidMeanToBeSoRudeActually · 02/04/2015 19:53

Followed by a fucking Tarte Tartin (pronounced tartartan and served undercooked).

I have had a light lunch of six Toffifee followed by a dinner of fish and chips and six more Toffifee. I'm not sure i can face watching food, tbh.

fourquenelles · 02/04/2015 20:03

Evening all. And here we go..........
