Old Baldie is back, I'm afraid. However, the format for the first round is a bit different.

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b055tb4z

Firstly, the contestants are given just one hour and fifteen minutes to dazzle the judges when they are asked to cook their calling card, a practised dish that represents just who they are as a cook and showcases their talent. After tasting all five dishes, John and Gregg, without telling each other, each pick their favourite dish. If they both choose the same dish then they will select their second preference. The two lucky cooks will be safe - for now - and sail straight through to the third test.

The remaining three contestants must cook again in a twist on the infamous invention test - the reinvention test. The hopefuls are given the main ingredient from their calling card dish, as well as access to the larder. Using that same ingredient, they must reinvent the dish to create a brand new plate of food that will sway the judges and earn them a place in the next round. They have one hour and fifteen minutes to cook a dish good enough to keep them in the competition. The stakes are high it's the end of the road for one person after this cook-off, as one of the amateurs will be sent home.

The four remaining cooks now have one more challenge standing between them and a quarter-final place. To earn their place they have to cook an impressive menu that will excite not just John and Gregg but also some very special guests. Once again, some of the competition's most inspiring winners and finalists return to judge the food of this year's new contenders to the throne.

In tonight's heat the contestants must attempt to impress three MasterChef Champions - 2009 champion Mat Follas, 2010 champion Dhruv Baker and 2012 champion Shelina Permalloo are back to give their verdict.

After the four hopefuls have cooked, John and Gregg will decide which two will take the next step in the competition and go through to Friday's quarter-final.

That looks disgusting Arabella. Shame it's tasty.

TrulyTurtles · 01/04/2015 20:16

Arabella-One Of Us? Hers looked orrible, but apparently nice.

squoosh · 01/04/2015 20:16

Cheese has no business anywhere near fish. Not even in a biscuit on a plate beside it.

Trills · 01/04/2015 20:16

The tarka daal looked v nice.

Sometimes I wish they'd publish the contestants' recipes.

JuneFromBethesda · 01/04/2015 20:16

squoosh Grin

Oh bloody hell, Totes can cook ...

Ellenora5 · 01/04/2015 20:17

I don't know why we have to have a running commentary from the other contestants, they should have to leave the kitchen

JuneFromBethesda · 01/04/2015 20:17

I'm sure they used to, Trills, in the BBC Good Food magazine.

GrouchyKiwi · 01/04/2015 20:17

Totes is going to drown them all.

squoosh · 01/04/2015 20:19

I'd trust tall smiley DIY shop man's advice on paint and trellis.

TrulyTurtles · 01/04/2015 20:20

Fucking hate those people who go "oh I'm so rubbish, boo hoo" and then nail it.
Gregg clone is making it up as he goes along.

GrouchyKiwi · 01/04/2015 20:20

Aww, happy birthday, Welshie.

JuneFromBethesda · 01/04/2015 20:20

Aw, bless her. I like Beth. Happy birthday Smile

squoosh · 01/04/2015 20:20

Chinese dumplings are one of my favourite things.

LineRunner · 01/04/2015 20:21

I quite enjoy vague cookery.

GrouchyKiwi · 01/04/2015 20:21

Paul and Ross need to swap actual names.

squoosh · 01/04/2015 20:22

Go Gregg clone (Glone). You look like Mr Proper!

TrulyTurtles · 01/04/2015 20:22

Dh has just said "they always do Ravi fucking oli."

growinggoldwithcustard · 01/04/2015 20:22

Don't want any of these to go - they all have some skill. Shame that the heats can be very uneven and someone who would walk through in other heats fails in this.

Trills · 01/04/2015 20:22

Rice in a ring!

I so need some rings.

JuneFromBethesda · 01/04/2015 20:22

Oh dear, the stroganoff looks a bit like a ready meal

They DO always do ravioli!

GrouchyKiwi · 01/04/2015 20:23

The heats have been very uneven this year, growinggold.

squoosh · 01/04/2015 20:23

Awwwww I like Paul, I don't want him to get the push.

Send DIY man back.

TrulyTurtles · 01/04/2015 20:24

Arf Squoosh. Think him and his vague stroganoff are off.
