Episode written by Oliver Brown

1/2

The first episode of this latest ITV1 two-parter is very promising indeed, particularly if you like your TV dramas eerie and just a little bit scary. Tensions build very nicely as happy family - mum and dad Neil and Elizabeth (Ben Miles and Rachael Blake) and their two children - embark on a camping holiday in rural France. On their first camp-site stop they meet a friendly (perhaps even too friendly?) couple with a camper van, Simon and Linda (Daniel Ryan and Fay Ripley). But relations between the two couples become uneasy when there are strong hints that Simon and Linda are not all they seem. And when a child goes missing, the suspense ratchets up quite a few notches. Occasionally reminiscent of the early Steven Spielberg classic Duel, this is a pretty good attempt at injecting a few thrills into a good old-fashioned cat-and-mouse story. Unfortunately, as with an awful lot of these two-night tales, tomorrow's concluding episode disappoints.

One of the things I thought was

Did the mum put a sat nav thingy under the car when she put the tent peg into tyre ????

And so they were following the signal thingy ??

I wondered about that tutter, otherwise it was too coincidental!!

And who on earth would travel thru France in a car that was sooooooooo old!!

RTKangaMummy · 25/10/2006 17:50

collision my parents have friends who take a 1920s car to the south of france every year!

zippitippitoes · 25/10/2006 17:51

ah i thought the love of the classic car at the expense of love for the wife/family was one of the "themes"

TheDivineLiliLaTigresse · 25/10/2006 17:51

we travelled through France in dh's old beetle many times (it was about 25 years old then!)
but that was pre-dd

collision · 25/10/2006 17:52

madness!!

TheDivineLiliLaTigresse · 25/10/2006 17:53

I made dh give the car up when we had dd (because the battery actually went through the floor once!!!)

RTKangaMummy · 25/10/2006 18:02

Collision, re the overreacting to the Camper couple, when Fay Ripley started telling her that she wouldn't let her kids stay out on holiday, did you not think, 'she is a bloody mumsnetter - get your popcorn'.

zippitippitoes · 25/10/2006 19:05

and is the mum having an affair with her dh business partner?

RTKangaMummy · 25/10/2006 19:08

Or used to be having an affair

OP posts:
RTKangaMummy · 25/10/2006 19:09

zippitippitoes · 25/10/2006 19:12

who wsa she on the phone to in the bar?

and is the french smoothie going to save the day?

and how do they manage to get their camps up and down so quick?

Zippetydoodahzippetyday · 25/10/2006 19:17

Well he was eyeing up anything that moved.....

Thought it was good and DP and I are looking forward to it tonight - mind you we love these kind of dramas, quite sad really but we are almost into mid thirties now

Think its a bit stupid that they don't inform the police about the boy, mind you it would stop them from finding their own kids.

Cannot believe they actually left them in the woods in the car whilst they went looking for help.

Tutter · 25/10/2006 19:58

french surfer boy goig to be the hero i reckon

pesme · 25/10/2006 20:04

did anyone else think - you can never fit all that camping stuff into the boot of a car. the children should have been sitting on cool boxes and cocooned in sleeping bags etc.

7up · 25/10/2006 20:08

i wondered that last night pesme! when they upped andleft really quickly,as they were driving off i did think their boot looked small to put everything in. oh well, it is tv after all, good though

RTKangaMummy · 25/10/2006 20:09

Yes the boot was like a tardis

Surfermummystomb · 25/10/2006 20:13

Yes, I commented to dh and dsd, how come they're camping in their own tent, on holiday for two weeks and have no top box, trailer and their kids are sitting with feet in buckets and squashed between clobber.

RTKangaMummy · 25/10/2006 20:42

So guys don't miss the start

Rhubarb · 25/10/2006 20:43

Anyone would think they ripped the idea off a real life family who offed to France in a caravan living in various campsites etc! Actually.................

Tutter · 25/10/2006 20:57

just realised it clashes with who do you think you are? which i love

hmmm
