I think it starts next week. Grin

shakemysilliesout · 15/01/2015 15:42

Ahhhhh ok that makes sense now. Thanks. She can go back to music and phil spencer can take over.

Davros · 15/01/2015 15:55

I don't understand the thing about cost of tests. If it were here pre-visa then they wouldn't have to pay and apparently they don't have to pay in Oz (if they ever got there)

shakemysilliesout · 15/01/2015 15:58

I had to get tests before I got my USA visa and pay for them- I was over 18 though. I was tested for TB and dr completed a medical form. But I have no conditions so the tests were relatively cheap, about £100 I think. You have to pay for some nhs stuff here, like travel vaccs

Davros · 15/01/2015 16:03

I see, they're tests especially to apply for the visa rather than part of ongoing treatment

askyfullofstars · 16/01/2015 09:21

So, they cant afford a different area of Belfast, but want to emigrate, somewhere they have never been....

LoisWilkerson15 · 16/01/2015 09:22

Ooh interesting couple this morning. They seen nice. If Liverpool was too far can't see her coping with Australia.

askyfullofstars · 16/01/2015 09:23

I thought that lois

Bakeoffcakes · 16/01/2015 09:24

I didn't realise things were still that bad in Belfast, regarding mixed relationships. It's really sad.

LoisWilkerson15 · 16/01/2015 09:39

I think in certain areas it is still very bitter. Its a shame they feel the need to move it is people like them that are needed in the community.

LegsOfSteel · 16/01/2015 09:43

Seem like a lovely couple.

House 3 was nice but didn't feel like a home to me - not comfy.

Hillingdon · 16/01/2015 09:51

I dont think they will go - what if they have children? Although they seem nice.

Vagndidit · 16/01/2015 09:57

How much more expensive are neutral areas of Belfast anyway? Cannot be that bad. Yet they can afford a move across the world?

Again I get the need to move but why so far?! Really liked them though. The background is the catholic/protestant divide in Belfast it was implied they live in an area still affected.

They didnt go.....

LoisWilkerson15 · 16/01/2015 10:25

They didn't go into too much detail but it was implied they are from different sides and that had maybe caused problems. I wonder how much it actually costs to ship all your stuff, get all your papers etc? Any expats on can help?

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 16/01/2015 11:35

a lot! shipping even minimal stuff is expensive, then visas etc unless you are sponsored easily runs into thousands of pounds. not ure how up to date this is but costs of a couple of thousand per visa
Visa Costs

The cost of visas varies widely and is dependant on what type of visa you go for. For example a 5-year business visa cost approximately £2,000 whilst a 4-year last remaining family member visa cost over £2,500. Check the Australian Immigration Webpage for more details.

Other Visa Costs

Other visa costs such as medicals and police reports can be around £250 per person

Assurance of Support

Some visas require an Assurance of Support from an Australian resident and is around $5,000 for a single person or $7,000 for a couple. Check the details of the visa to see if this is required or contact the Australian Immigration Department

Australian gov website says $2370 for first applicant, $1185 additional applicants over 18 and $595 for applicants under 18, so for my family (2 parents, ds1 17, ds2 13, and dd 8) that would be £2882 in visa application fees alone.

shipping easily up to £5k, plus flights of around 6-700 per person, plus deposits on rentals or solicitors fees on purchasing, easily £20k to move. Unless you have a property with plenty of equity in this country im not sure how many people can afford it.

I've visited Australia several times and have family in Melbourne and Perth and my friends in Perth and Sydney, but its not the idyll that many people expect, especially if you still have to work. You still have the daily grind, commute, school run. food shopping (not as many home delivery services, I believe), washing, cleaning, but in sunshine, sometimes unbearable heat. I loved visiting and can't wait to go back again but better the devil you know for me.

Hillingdon · 16/01/2015 11:47

Help - that is interesting. Some of the people they show are just on the edge of being able to afford the move, how on earth do they fund all of what you have listed as well!

As I have said before, lets look at a couple of professionals with say a budget of 700k to spend on a house rather than people who have medical issues (surely they must know that is going to be an issue), one side of the family who doesnt want to work, and teenagers who dont want to leave their friends.

Does anyone remember the family with the teenager who got pregnant so the family decided not to go. I thought she had done it on purpose as she claimed she didnt want to leave her latest boyfriend who she consequently split up with!

Glastokitty · 16/01/2015 11:52

I'm originally from NI, although I left over 20 years ago for London. Now I'm in Oz. My friend that was on Wish you were here is also from NI. While things in NI have mellowed a hell of a lot for most ordinary people, a mixed marriage will still be an issue for the nutters. My husband would never have wanted to move to NI ( he is from a Catholic family and mine are not), and I don't blame him. I was glad to get away from all the sectarian shit too. We are both atheists, but culturally our different backgrounds would have been noted at least. Some people just can't be arsed with it all! Grin. so yeah, there are nice bits of NI, my mum lives in one, but I still wouldn't want to live there!

LoisWilkerson15 · 16/01/2015 12:01

Thats interesting kitty such a shame some people are stuck in the past, there some of that in parts of Scotland where I am too.
help Yikes at those costs! shove the sun They should mention that aspect in the show!

LoisWilkerson15 · 16/01/2015 12:03

*there is some of that

Vagndidit · 16/01/2015 13:41

Perhaps they all cling to the hope that they'll be handsomely compensated if they move and Nikki twirls in for an episode of WDU: Revisited.

It cost a blardy fortune for us just to move over from the States to the UK. UK Home Office has earned a small fortune on the visa and ILR fees paid for our family so I can only imagine the cash you need for a move around the world.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 16/01/2015 14:33

I think lots of people, hope that they will get a job that will pay relocation costs, but this is unrealistic these days.

When I qualified as a midwife, we did briefly look into moving to oz or nz, but the competition for sponsored moves was high. We had visited oz by then and only considered it briefly as felt it would be a good career move (also h is in IT and at the time sponsored and paid for relocations were available in his sector).

I believe from my friends who are now in secret harbour, its realistic that you might get a job whereby they sponsor the visa, as in become a type of guarantor but don't lay out any money, you still have to pay the visa and relocation fees? They initially got sponsorship to the gold coast (he's an air conditioning engineer), but ended up near Perth as the job on the gold coast wasn't as expected and accommodation was far too expensive once living costs taken into consideration, so mad panic to find a sponsor in a more affordable part of the country.

MamaMary · 16/01/2015 15:33

Nice couple today, and I think they could make a go of it, but they would not be that much better off financially. For each of them, only an extra 5k per year - and with the cost of living that wouldn't actually leave them any better off, from what I've seen.

What happens when they want to start a family and are down to one income? No relatives to help with childcare.

On the other hand, it seems like they really would make the most of the outdoor lifestyle.
