I think it starts next week. Grin

NewMe I was surprised about the weekly shop too. I thought fruit and veg was expensive in Oz even though it's grown there.
The family's list was quite sparse - not sure how realistic it was. Maybe they buy expensive generic food here? Maybe Melbourne is cheaper?? Seemed odd.

Its all about the weather and not needing to learn another language for some. If I wanted a better quality of life for my kids I would go to Scandinavia or maybe Germany. I also notice nobody factors in the cost of air travel back to the uk once or twice a year.

northender · 13/01/2015 11:03

This may be different now but when my friend worked in NZ as a physio (admittedly 20 years ago), the salary wasn't much different from UK and the big difference was much less annual leave, not great if you're wanting to visit home.

Davros · 13/01/2015 14:29

I wish they would tell us the cost of the house (rent?) where they stay during the programme. Just being nosy

MamaMary · 13/01/2015 17:08

A nice family today. Sad that the mum couldn't earn enough to pay the bills, as an NHS nurse. Though I'm still unconvinced a move to a country the other side of the planet, where they know noone, would be the answer long-term.

The women in Monday's and Tuesday's programmes were both significantly overweight and I did wonder if that in itself might pose an obstacle to emigrating.
Obviously you need to pass a medical as pre-existing conditions could be problematic but as obesity often leads to future health problems, even if not currently present, eg type 2 diabetes, joint problems etc, does anyone know how it's regarded in the emigration process?

MamaMary · 13/01/2015 18:40

Or if she gets ill in the future and finds herself rather alone, without friends and wider family, i..e a support network.

shakemysilliesout · 13/01/2015 19:06

Legsofsteel- I agree with relocation costs- unless u have significant savings that would wipe you out for a bit financially.

Let's not bring weight into it. No one knows what health issues the future brings them.

Glastokitty · 13/01/2015 22:16

I can answer the fat question. You can emigrate no problem if you are fat, there are no official guidelines but I heard unofficially that they will refer your medical for further consideration if your BMI is over 35. Having a health condition doesn't neccessarily rule you out either, so long as they think you aren't going to cost them an absolute fortune.

Davros · 13/01/2015 23:47

Unlike Canada the last I read

SavoyCabbage · 14/01/2015 00:14

I know someone who failed the medical for residency for australia as she was overweight. This was two years ago. She had to lose a certain amount before reapplying, which she did.

SavoyCabbage · 14/01/2015 01:46

Right, Ive just watched the carnival one.

Our school has one so I can share some of my 'knowledge' about it. Ours is every year and makes about $65,000. About $25 000 is paid out again for the hire of the rides, tables etc.

All of the money raised goes into the school's ordinary budget for teachers, repairs etc.

Our fete is organised by the parents. There is a committee and then every stall has a stall leader who is a parent. There is an expectation that an adult from every family will 'work' on a stall for the duration of the fete. Ours is 2pm till 6pm. You are also expected to go to either 'fete set up' on the friday night 'fete take down' on the Saturday night or 'fete clean up' on the Sunday. And people do do it. The rota is online for a start so everyone would know. Grin But we aren't wandering round our own school fetes having a great time is what I am saying. The kids have a blast and there is a sense of community as we do all pull together to make it happen.

I reckon ours costs us a couple of hundred dollars. Every family has to bake a cake and send it in as well as make up a gift basket type affair to be sold. we have to sell raffle tickets and the wrist bands for the dc to go on the rides are $30 each.

It's a vast amount of work is what I am saying I suppose but ours is essential for our school as if it didn't happen there would be a big hole in the budget.

susiedaisy · 14/01/2015 09:19

Anyone watching today?

Vagndidit · 14/01/2015 09:21

I'm here!

Seems like dad needs to reshuffle his work. Don't think Australia is the solution either.

Horsemad · 14/01/2015 09:23

Me! I'd rather have Cornwall tbh!!

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2015 09:27

I think it might be 'Poor Wayne' before the end. Sad

Vagndidit · 14/01/2015 09:28

Pool's too small. Bless.

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2015 09:30

Hahahaha. Small pool.

Does anyone else think it's a bit cruel on these sort of age children to dangle the carrot of swimming pools and beaches then possibly say no?

susiedaisy · 14/01/2015 09:32

Let's hope they can afford the furniture and all the plants

Vagndidit · 14/01/2015 09:34

Sure, now they tell us where Harry's been. Getting sloppy there, producers.

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2015 09:34

'Ocean on the doorstep'. Because you can't have that in Cornwall. oh no.

susiedaisy · 14/01/2015 09:35

Nice house

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2015 09:35

'lush' Hmm

I hope it's way over budget.

susiedaisy · 14/01/2015 09:36

Wouldn't want to clean it though

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2015 09:36

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
