Susie I don't know, but in real life she is 49 and Reedus is almost 46. The actress playing Beth is late 20s but 18 on the show.

I don't understand while people see them as older sisterly or maternal. I think if every Carol/Daryl scene were reenacted with a gray haired actor and an actress who looked a few years younger, I don't think anyone would say it was paternal. I think they'd wonder why they hadn't thrown down yet. :o

As far as what Reedus has said that's annoyed me, it's things like, when asked about Carol and Daryl "oh I've fought against them having a relationship, he's a lone wolf" etc but when asked about Beth and Daryl "I hope so, she's so cute." and again.

I also feel that it says something about the types of people the characters are. People thought Axel was creepy for hitting on Beth but it's okay for her to hook up with Daryl because he's"hot"? And people who don't want Daryl and Carol together say she's too old but "would have been good with Axel". Axel and Daryl are the same age! It's just that Axel is the quirky looking sidekick, not the hot badass, so it's okay if the motherly character bangs him.

If I was Melissa McBride I'd be really pissed off with Norman Reedus for those comments.

If I was Carol I don't think I'd want to shag anyone, even though I'd be unlikely to get pregnant. I'd find Daryl too much of a mate and he's very awkward. Not to mention grubby. Carol is super-clean, even after the walker-guts camouflage.

I understand why Maggie and Glenn or Sacha and Bob would be attracted to each other. It's not because they're younger, it's just because I can see that happening, mostly because they're the same age and have something in common.

I wonder whether Maggie and Glenn would have got together before the apocalypse because they are from different races and different backgrounds - she's rural and he's urban. But I don't know anything about that and don't intend any offence.

It's just that you don't see mixed couples on American TV and film often, and the times I've been to the US IRL, I don't remember seeing a mixed race couple. This was New York City and Los Angeles. In fact it took me a while in NYC to work out what I thought was odd.

Obviously I could be wrong. But in my limited experience, I didn't notice mixed race couples like I do, or rather don't, in Britain. IYSWIM I don't see them because they're so common, and it took me a while of not seeing them, to make me notice.

Well I'm American as and my best friend is white and married to a man from Ghana, so I don't think twice about it :) It depends on where you are, I guess. I live in Minnesota and we are a very Caucasian state, or were. Now there has been a huge influx of immigrants from Somalia so that's changing.

I'd also be pissed off if I were Melissa, but if she is she hides it well. All she's said when confronted with the "ship war" bu shit is that Carol would be glad Daryl had Beth to lean on when they had left the prison and thought everyone was dead, and to admonish her fans to be nice. She was rather pointed about that. To be totally honest, though it's usually teenage girls who love Beth and slag Carol off, I have seen grown women who ought to know better fans of Carol say unkind things about Beth/Emily as well. So she was right to call them out.

I know she did once say rather emphatically that she did not see the Daryl/Carol bond as mother/son. I think she was itching to say "he's three years younger than me you twat" :o

I've heard the gay thing as well. They may do it but I'd be surprised. I think if they do it will be in response to the rabid fans and their response to him having a female relationship, not because the writers ever intended it to be that way.

It would be interesting though. Merle would roll in his grave, that one handed bastard.

I see it as maternal because Carol seems so much more mature and DARRYL has shown her an intimate very childlike side of him that he hasn't shown anyone else.
In the scene where they reunited as she pulled back he leaned back into her in tears- she was more in control the way a parent would be (IMO).

I'm conflicted about their relationship but it certainly isn't because of the age of the actors and all to do with the dynamic of the characters.

On the other hand I thought the scenes with BETH last season were v badly written. She came across as a petulant teenager and I couldn't see anything in her that would attract Darryl in any way.

Daryl does look younger though, especially in the first few seasons. I thought he was mid 30s, whereas Carol looks like someone in her mid 40s.
So I can see where the younger brother / older sister thing comes from.

I used to think so, but the smoking has really caught up with him lately. If you look at his face, he really looks mid-40:s, if you ignore the dyed hair and constant tongue stuck out.

But you know...that's sort of my point too. Even if he DID look mid 30s (and he really did look that way, if not younger, until a few years ago) and Carol looked mid 40s...how many movies/TV shows have an actor paired up with a woman who looks a decade younger or so? So, so many. And unless it's glaring (Winona Ryder and who was it, Richard Gere in that one movie?) no one notices or says a thing. They certainly don't say it's older brotherly or paternal.

That Gabriel's a wrong 'un. He's obviously in with the termites. There's no way anybody would survive that long, without killing anyone or being killed, in that old wooden church by themselves. He's probably done that rock routine loads of times, sat up there shouting till someone came along. Bob didn't wander that far from the church and the termites found him. I reckon Gabriel's secret is that he's a cannabil. That would explain how he's lasted that long. The church is probably an outpost for the terminus. He had a phone on his desk. Perhaps he was able to ring Gareth and swap recipes.
