Yeah and i dont like them either nancy75 Grin

I think it is kind of illegal - they have more than one 'wife' even though not classed as legal wife.

sourdrawers · 25/09/2014 14:52

You're all a bunch of bloody racists!

Insanityismymiddlename · 25/09/2014 15:03

Not seen the programme but I have recorded it out of interest. I am curious though as to why the opinion the women have the short straw?
I know a few poly relationships and everyone of them is consenual and most are a lot happier than the monogamous couples I know.

I, myself am in a poly relationship although with 2 men, living together and have DCs and it works for us.

Each to their own in my opinion.

staceypeach · 25/09/2014 15:08

I take it your kidding us Sourdrawers? Buuuuut are we all sure it's nothing to do with their culture? I mean would we all be so upset if it was just some irresponsible, deadbeat white bloke fathering kids?

Patrickstarisabadbellend · 25/09/2014 18:39

Are you taking the piss sourdraws ?

andsmile · 25/09/2014 20:23

Like I've said you can't dislike something whatever it is about a minority group because you then get labelled prejudiced in this case racist.

My dislike is to do with the way some Muslims portrayed in this programme live in particular how women are treated oppressively. I am not stupid I know all Muslins do not live like this or people with brown skin.

So 'sour' do fuck off with your unfounded allegations

andsmile · 25/09/2014 20:27

Insanity, sorry I didn't reply ^

If you are happy that is great. It is definitely not for me, but I can see how it can work. I thought polygamy was portrayed positively and negatively on the TV series ' big love'. I didn't think so in this programme. But I also think there are women living line that in monogamous relationships too. The men just seemed quite selfish.

Aeroflotgirl · 25/09/2014 22:45

Very uncomfortable about this program. Women are tge possession of men, the new wife has to wear tge niquab, to keep her covered. It's as I thought, not the woman's choice, but that imposed by the man. I can't imagine anyone wanting to wear that or the burka.

Aeroflotgirl · 25/09/2014 22:52

It's not racist, it's disagreeing with the blatant mysogeny, and that's what's got peoples backs up

Behoove · 25/09/2014 23:24

Not rascist in the slightest. That's a very lazy accusation. I watched the programme, it seemed to me to be absolute arseholes of men hiding behind their religion in order to be able to use and subjugate women at their pleasure without any remorse, economically, morally or ethically.

Aeroflotgirl · 25/09/2014 23:36

I agree, it was very sad to watch. Controlling, mysogenistic men, using their religion to use women as playthings. I am sure not all Muslim men are like this, dh friend certainly is not and is very decent and respectful towards his wife.

AllYouNeedIsTea · 26/09/2014 11:11

I saw a programme about domestic abuse in the Muslim community a while ago. Women would visit the Sharia equivalent of solicitors. I was shocked to hear the advice of these elders - it was all about what the woman could do to make her husband happier and therefore less likely to beat her.

And yes, why does polygamy usually involve one man with many women and not the other way round? I don't know a lot about religion but i'm not convinced that the bible tells us this is okay. It certainly condemns adultery. Is this not simply justified adultery?

AllYouNeedIsTea · 26/09/2014 11:14

I hope my message doesn't read like there is only dv in the Muslim community, i obviously know that isn't the case. But women can be protected under British law whereas Sharia law seemed to put the onus on the woman's behaviour. And i know that not all Muslims live by Sharia law.

sourdrawers · 26/09/2014 11:30

Take it easy andsmile, & staceypeach of course i was only kidding. Someone said at least no one has called us racists yet, so I thought what an opportune moment to be hilariously funny and do so.

staceypeach you do make an interesting point. Remember that loser who killed, I think it was 6 of his dozen or so poor children in a fire that he started, about a year ago? The mail or express I forget which, (probably both) commented on how this appaling tragedy was indicative of the benefits culture in this country, and the general consensus on MN was indignation that they dare pass an opinion on how people live.

GeekLove · 26/09/2014 11:43

TBH the polygamy practised in this show is very similar to that practised by many white British people I knew of growing up - I e a deadbeat dad with multiple offspring by different women but little knowledge or competency of parenting. It is very similar to that horrible case in Derby where that man and one of his 'wives' killed 6 of his children when another of his 'wives' escaped.
