My son had Mr Bispham the year before they filmed -- when he was in Y8. So he must have been absolutely brand new then and DS thought he was brilliant.

I think these programmes are edited very selectively -- for example, you wouldn't have known from that episode that FB is mostly boys, would you? Most of the girls in the catchment go to Walthamstow Girls.

The fixed cameras were in school for a half term, and there were dozens of them; the producers say 'after a couple of days, everyone forgets they're there' and I think that's probably true.

You can spot my son; he's one of the ones with his face blurred.

I think the fact that his observed lesson went so well, proves that the rest was the edited low points from numerous lessons.

"Feeling unsure and scared witless at being observed? Normal with how much you have riding on it - I don't know of anyone who doesn't at least feel on edge knowing one's looming - even just a really routine one"

I never felt quite like that in my teaching days, personally. I think he lacked in confidence generally, though.

NanaNina · 05/09/2014 23:26

I agree with MissMillicent (sp?) the production team will have a story arc - teacher struggling, class out of control, triumphs in the end, kids on his side, and then the film will be edited accordingly. I thought they had cameras rigged up in the school as they couldn't really have a camera crew trailing around the school. I was surprised though that the filming was only for half a term; I would have thought they'd have filmed for a lot longer.

I know a family whose children are on a TV programme "Child of our Time" and they film for about 12 hours in the house and then the children are maybe shown for 3 or 4 minutes at most! Don't know if anyone saw the Channel 4 much talked about "Benefit Street" as apparently they filmed for 12 months for that programme of around 6 episodes I think.

I think these programmes could become very formulaic. There was some programmes on a while ago about the Teach First teachers who were placed in secondary schools with poor catchment areas, and it was very similar. One particular young Asian woman was seen to be totally out of control with the kids running rings around her and then surprise surprise it all came good in the end.

I watched this programme and actually really liked Mr B. He reminded me of a tutor we had at school years ago..longish hair,a bit of a scruff and not quite as 'presentable' as most of the others but he was a lovely teacher who would always take the time to talk you through any problems both personal and educational. Mr b seemed to really care for the kids and probably worried long after he had gone home. Sadly I have not seen 'our Mr B' for over 35 years but always remember what a great teacher he was.

Icimoi · 06/09/2014 14:38

Yup, I too am quite Confused at the attitude to Mr B round here. It just is no picnic for anyone dealing with a classroom of 14 year old girls, he plainly really cares and anyone 18 months in on the Teach First programme is allowed to make the odd mistake.

I felt so sorry for that English teacher, when I was 14 ( 33yrs ago) our English teacher was superb, he took us to the theatre once a month after school with half price tickets, and when we sat down and he started teaching he was enthralling. I really hope that English teacher doesn't lose he's motivation because of unruly kids. It's an eye opener how hard the teachers job is nowadays .

BOFster · 11/09/2014 21:07

I can't hear "disrespected" without thinking of Catherine Tate.

MiddleEarthBarbie · 11/09/2014 21:08

Poor child.

FuzzyWizard · 11/09/2014 21:08

FuzzyWizard · 11/09/2014 21:09

I am Shock at the response to this. That would be an automatic 5 day exclusion at my school!

OhMyArsingGodInABox · 11/09/2014 21:10

I would put money on him losing his temper quite often... he'd never be at school.

BOFster · 11/09/2014 21:15

That smile- talk about butter wouldn't melt!

OhMyArsingGodInABox · 11/09/2014 21:16

HighwayDragon · 11/09/2014 21:16

I laughed when he corrected her email, cheeky bugger

pinkr · 11/09/2014 21:16
