I think he's lucky the pupils decided to go easy on him! That lesson didn't seem representative of the others we saw (allowing for editing bias....)

That is unbelievable MrsDeVere Shock

I'm so sorry about your daughter Flowers

MiddleEarthBarbie · 04/09/2014 22:07

unbelievable as in horrendous, not as in you are making it up!

Echocave · 04/09/2014 22:08

Bloody hell MrsdeVere, that must have been so upsetting for you. Whilst the intention behind it may have been good, the off-handed remark was unforgivable.

girliefriend · 04/09/2014 22:08

Flipping heck MrsD Shock

weebarra · 04/09/2014 22:10

Oh ffs, MrsD. Now I'm less surprised that they were unaware of Acacia's mum's condition.

Lilka · 04/09/2014 22:11

That's awful, unbelievable MrsDV Sad

Hopefully, if Mr B is reflective, he will avoid making the same mistake twice. There are some subjects that should be considered very sensitively at all times, even when you know nothing of the class's experiences, and cancer and death are two of those subjcts.

I went to a private school and we were just like that in year 9, possibly worse.

Nerf · 04/09/2014 22:21

Is year 9 14 year olds? I can't remember, we were all quite pseudo intellectual and angst ridden - all girls grammar, starved of the diversion of boys and make up and obsessed with Virginia Thingy and Georgia OKeefe.

Nerf · 04/09/2014 22:29

Old year three then? First year at secondary after middle school. I'm so old.

EduCated · 04/09/2014 22:29

MrsDV, that is truly fucking awful.

member · 04/09/2014 22:53

That beggars belief Mrs DV Shock was it the same Head as now? I think after the high profile/success of Educating Yorkshire that the kids are playing to the camera.

Do children tend to be told when an observation of a teacher is going to take place or did they just find out via the film crew? Seems somewhat odd that the year 9s decided that he was a good teacher who they'd thank by trying hard on observation day; are we supposed to believe that the stopping of interactive lessons made them see the error of their ways?

Echocave · 04/09/2014 23:02

MrsDeVere, that is really awful. Your poor DS. I think you can judge a school by its' pastoral care and obviously this one - merged or unmerged - failed your family miserably.

I know we can't tell truth from fiction on these programmes thanks to editing, but the school in Educating Yorkshire seemed to have a more caring side. I really disliked the rather perfunctory 'are you ok, Hun?' by a teacher to Acacia. Hun is never good in any context but from a teacher to a pupil? No.

Op
I work in the same town as the original Educating Essex and know parents at the essex school.
From what I can gather, they bring the cameras in for about 2 weeks and film everything. They then choose the dc who will make good tv" and get parents permission and wire up those children and follow them around with the cameras.

Sparklingbrook · 05/09/2014 08:15

Why would any parent agree to it? Confused

MissMillament · 05/09/2014 08:30

I think some people are being incredibly harsh on Mr Bispham. He's an NQT. The production team have a story arc for the new teacher - struggles with classroom management, eventually triumphs - and they edit the footage to fit in. You saw tiny snapshots of ONE of his classes that were designed to fit in with that story arc. None of it was anything you wouldn't have seen in ANY NQT's classroom from time to time. Give the guy a break - with his passion and committment he is going to be a really good teacher.

mammuzzamia · 05/09/2014 13:59

Mr B looked unsure of himself and scared witless at the thought of being observed. Difficult to judge his teaching fairly with the snapshots we saw.

I did notice the cheesed off expressions of the quieter pupils in that class, whilst all the chaos was going on. They didn't seem to receive as much attention, but again the editing I would not rely on.
