Just watched tonight's episode. Poor, poor Linda.

Have to say though very realistic so far, this is exactly how rape can be.

Dean is either in denial or covering his tracks, probably both.

Rapists do this, they absolutely convince themselves that they're just ordinary guys, and that she wanted it at least on some level. At worst they tell themselves that they read the signals wrong. But they're not rapists, because rapists just from behind bushes.

SuchSweetSorrow · 07/10/2014 21:47

Yes, I think he has convinced himself that she wanted him.
I have also found it so difficult to watch. Do we think she won't tell anyone anytime soon? Or maybe she confides in Sharon but not Mick

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 07/10/2014 22:02

What's the betting the pregnancy is announced on Xmas Day.... then Mick who will know by now will want her to get rid of it, in the end it will by some fluke turn out to be Micks baby....

Is Letitia Dean ill - she looks so bloated all the time.

Why does no one report these horrific crimes to the police, rapists, arsonists, gun toting molls, murderers all roaming the streets.

Southeastdweller · 07/10/2014 22:12

amother According to the actress who plays Linda, 90% of rapes aren't reported.

SuchSweetSorrow · 07/10/2014 22:22

Sadly I'm not surprised that the statistic is so high when victim blaming is so prevalent in our society. Some awful comments on the other thread about Linda being raped in AIBU

SilveryMoon · 07/10/2014 23:37

I don't think he's convinced himself she wanted him. The look and tone of guilt when he was with mick and checking what Linda had said tells me he knows exactly. I think he's trying to convince her she wanted it iykwim. Trying to make her doubt what actually happened

ByeByeButterfly · 08/10/2014 00:42

Have been away so not watched it yet how upsetting was Monday's?

I want to prepare myself really.

I honestly don't buy Shirley being that loved up by Phil when 18 months ago she hated his guts.

cleanmachine · 08/10/2014 07:16

Yes shirley has really got on my wick lately. Just fuck off to the far side of fuck and take mick with you. He covered up hevs murder remember shirl. Stop being such a desperate wrinkly old hag.

Southeastdweller · 08/10/2014 08:17

Bye It was as graphic as what it could have been given the time it was on. Like a PP I remember when Kathy Beale was raped. We obviously didn't see the actual act but I remember the episode being less explicit than the one on Monday with Linda - I doubt I'll ever get the image of her face on that table out of my head but maybe that's the point.

Mrsjayy · 08/10/2014 08:27

Kathys rape was a bit more brutal and fighty iyswim she tried to fight wilmot brown off, where as Linda couldn't struggle she just froze it was very chilling

Mrsjayy · 08/10/2014 08:41

a bit more brutal is not the right words I put that badly sorry

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/10/2014 09:38

Guess it shows that woman act differently. That what I meant by my orginal comment. Cathy did fight and scream where linda didn't as she was paralysed by fear /shock etc

just watched it,so want Linda to tell somebody, hope it does not go on and on

found last night's more difficult to watch than the actual rape episode

Mrsjayy · 08/10/2014 09:46

I have not seen last nights yet. Apparently E E have got lots of complaints about this

BastardGoDarkly · 08/10/2014 09:53

I think a warning before the programme started would have been wise. Kids are still milling about at that time, and it came out of nowhere.

Yeah, Shirley has had her day.

GetTheRedOut · 08/10/2014 15:34

I've heard there's been 300 complaints made about the storyline. I personally don't think the rape itself was graphic at all, it was implied. While upsetting to watch, as we know what was happening, I do think they were careful not to be explicit.

They also publicised it quite a lot so I'm surprised at those people complaining that their children were watching it. I record EE and Corrie so on the nights we have DSD and/or nieces or nephews I don't watch them until after they're in bed.

The shower scene afterwards was more explicit imo, as well as really heartbreaking.

Poor Linda, the silence response is so common. I didn't tell anyone for almost a year. Not for any rational reason (with hindsight obv, at the time I thought it was more than rational but completely necessary), but because I imagined the people I cared about didn't need to be worried with 'my mistake'. It took a really long time for me to accept I wasn't to blame. Personally, I'm glad they've covered this storyline. People need to see the reality of rape, that it's so often perpetrated by someone the woman knows, that this very reason leaves women feeling powerless to speak out, and that rapists VERY often convince themselves that it was consensual.

GetTheRedOut · 08/10/2014 15:45

I think with that text he is in the process of trying to convince himself it was consensual, and let her know he thinks that so she knows that if she ever says anything it will be his word against hers. His face changed right after she said she felt maternal towards him, which says to me that the rape was an attempt to control a maternal figure and take the power away from her. He punished Linda for Shirley's shitty mothering.

Southeastdweller · 08/10/2014 16:43

I agree there should have been a warning before Monday's episode. We were left with a clear idea of how the rape happened, which wasn't the case with Kathy Beale/Sheila Grant/John-Paul McQueen, IIRC.

Rape Crisis support the story and how it's been depicted:

www.digitalspy.co.uk/soaps/s2/eastenders/news/a601972/eastenders-linda-carter-rape-plot-praised-by-charity-rape-crisis.html

LineRunner · 08/10/2014 17:50

I bet Rape Crisis won't support a lot of the comments on this thread. The 'why didn't she just....' variety.

Yeah, why didn't she just not get herself raped, eh? Why did she not manage to establish and define all the evidential parameters for a future successful prosecution? Sheesh. Silly Linda.

Pyjamaramadrama · 08/10/2014 18:05

I think also the reason people are so uncomfortable with this storyline is because it has brought the cold hard facts about rape right into their living room.

People like to victim blame because that way they think that it could never happen to them, because they'd never walk alone at night, they'd never get that drunk, they'd never dress like that, they'd scream, fight.

What happened to the character Linda in EE could happen to anyone, and that makes people very uncomfortable.

BastardGoDarkly · 08/10/2014 18:39

Line to be fair that was one post, from one poster Confused

LineRunner · 08/10/2014 18:47

I saw quite a few, Bastard ( if you don't mind me me calling you that ...) but it's all a matter of reflection and perception I guess.

I do admire MN's campaign which really addresses 'rape myths' and how insidious they are. I think it's one of the best campaigns I have ever seen.

MoaningLisa · 08/10/2014 19:06

The mystery man I think is the copper who was taken off the Lucy murder case. played Malachy in Hollyoaks before EE.

also think the rape comes to light on Xmas Day, Mick starts beating Dean and Shirley shouts at him to stop because he's his brother. Then that's when it comes out that Shirley is Micks mum.

We also find out who killed Lucy on 19th February next year during a live episode to celebrate rate the 30th Anniversary. That week will also include a week of Live episodes.

ChuckNovice · 08/10/2014 19:07

Ok Moaning thanks for the spoiler warning

ChuckNovice · 08/10/2014 19:08

Or is that a guess? Sorry.
