DH was really puzzled when I said how sad MrsV was going to be Grin

My musings for tomorrow's winners:

Lipsticki

Bouchard

Djok

Fed

Murray

Raonic - I think Nick will have a big let down tomorrow.

But I can't wait to be proved wrong!

MrsVamos · 01/07/2014 22:06

I'm OK. Smile

I don't really think Rafa needs to prove himself anymore does he ?!

And the match was just fantastic. Both played great tennis, and Rafa would be the first to say Nick played better.

I just hope that the 'old guard' know when to stop.

So horrible when defeat cannot be accepted gracefully.

I feel like Raahh. Sad to see Rafa go, but so so pleased to see great, fresh new talent climbing the ranks.

I hope the young pups can fulfill their potential, and give us as much joy, agony, awe etc as Rafa and co have.

Oh, and Thanks to you ALL for making yet another Wimby so special.

My thoughts on tomorrow:

Want Lipsticki to win but I think Halep will take this match (although I like her as well). I'd like Lipsticki to win the tournament.

Kerber/Bouchard - not too bothered either way. Think it could be close, but Kerber might just edge it.

Djok will beat Cilic, but I'll be shouting for Cilic.

Fed will beat Stan, but I'd like it to be the other way around.

Murray all the way against Grigor, even though I love Grigor.

Raonic will win, if the usual story of a player who's had a big win falls a bit flat next match holds true. I really hope Nick proves me wrong.

Raahh · 01/07/2014 22:14

MrsV I agree with all that. And I don't feel like I did when he lost last year- there is still a lot to look forward to.I am glad he lost to a good player-and not to Rosol again!

Rafa needs to re-group and get ready for the gazillion points sight exaggeration he is defending in the hard court season.

He will also retain his world number 1 status- so long as Djok loses either at or before the final ( if my maths is right).

Rafa has big boots to fill- but I don't think he's going anywhere yet.

Nick is the exception to the 'players are maturing older' rule, I think.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 01/07/2014 22:14

This thread has 600+ posts already. We might need a new one tomorrow.

Raahh · 01/07/2014 22:16

I am just looking forward AC getting all flustered commentating the Murray/Grigor match- it will be so funny.

He's probably contractually obliged to be as biased as he can be in Murray's favour. But he luuuuuuuurves Grigor Grin

It will fry his tiny brain Grin

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 01/07/2014 22:18

He'd better be the exception, Raahh. If he gets better and better over the next 10 years he'll be unstoppable and I'll have to take back what I said about eating my hat if Dimitrov never becomes world number 1.

Raahh · 01/07/2014 22:24
Grin

I think Grigor can do it- but he has a very different game. He's not called Baby Fed for nothingGrin . It's an interesting time.

And I've not given up on Dogs or Ernie. Grin

MrsVamos · 01/07/2014 22:26

I think it could be a very good rivalry between Grigor and Nick, if they make the big time.

I agree, Raahh. I think Rafa may well be that one in a lifetime...certainly I cant see anyone beating his RG record in the forseeable future, possibly ever ?

To think he has won 9 times out of 10, a 66-1 win/loss ratio. Wow. Just amazing.

Will look forward to his defence of FM.

Glad to hear he will maintain No.1, if only cos I bet it pees Novak off.

Wonder if any of my predictions will come true ?

My dreams didn't

I get the feeling Djok isn't that fussed this year. He's getting married, he's having a baby. It's cool in Djok world. Somehow i imagine him being more hands on than Roger.

I know we see carefully planned photo ops of Roger playing with his girls in the park, but in reality, i have visions of a Downton-esque - 'meeting Papa in the nursery on the 3rd Sunday after lent'. Grin

I'm probably wrong, and Super-Fed will carry all 4 around in a sling Grin

anamenotanumber · 01/07/2014 22:31

I know one of NK's team and it was just the loveliest thing to watch today, with him in the box. The guy concerned was excited enough that NK had a wild card at the start of the fortnight and would never ever have imagined this.

But yes I fear it might all be too much for him, especially without a day's break. I hope i am proved wrong!!

Raahh · 01/07/2014 22:36

aname- that's amazing. Bet is was brilliant watching his reactions.

All he needs to do tomorrow is come out with the 'nothing to lose' attitude he had today. There will be more expectation and buzz around him, certainly. I imagine the crowd will be with him too. (Sorry, MilosGrin).

MrsVamos · 01/07/2014 22:39

Raahh

Omg, that's how I imagine Feds family too ! Grin

I secretly don't think Mama or Papa have much to do with them, really.

I think Novak may be a bit more down to earth but think wifey will soon be fecked off if hubby is travelling to try to win a slam again.

Think he may be on the wane, but not sure if it is only because of wedding/baby worries or if his body is starting to say 'enough'.

I think he is fussed about No.1.

Watch him lose his temper if he has a tough match. He doesn't like an opposing crowd either. Wink

I think Nick will be fine tomorrow !

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 01/07/2014 22:40

I much prefer Dimitrov's game. I could sit and watch him play all day. It's clever, interesting tennis, not just brute force. Interesting about them calling him 'baby Fed'. I feel the same way about Fed's game and Nadal's to an extent to.

I suspect it's what I don't like about the Williams sisters too. They sort of steam-rollered over the women's game when they game on the scene. It wins games, but it's dull to watch.

MrsVamos · 01/07/2014 22:41

aname

Wow !

OP posts:
Raahh · 01/07/2014 22:45

Rafa I think that is what needs to happen with Nick- he needs to prove his game has the sublime passing shots, that he can sustain a rally. That all is not lost if his serve is out of wack one day.

MrsVamos · 01/07/2014 22:45

Yes, Rafa.

Grigor seems to have the best bits of Roger and Rafa. I was watching him the other day, and at Queens, and to me, he plays a clever game.

Lots of shots, not just as you say, whacking the ball from end to end.

OP posts:
anamenotanumber · 01/07/2014 22:47

It was the fabbest thing watching someone's dreams come true.

Interesting this whole changing of the guard idea. The fed must be ready to call it a day soon. Maybe he wants to avoid the night feeds though by staying in the tour!

Raahh · 01/07/2014 22:48

Here's a stat for you all

Nick has served 113 aces so far this tournament.

Milos Raonic has served 108.

Tomorrows match could be a very quick, slightly dull affair, with tie breaks Grin

MrsVamos · 01/07/2014 22:50

Yy, Raahh.

Hopefully it will evolve and come with time.

Do you think Rafa made the mens game boring, because people have to whack end to end because of how he plays ?

Or is it the newer players who have tried to beat him and just can't ?

Rafa adapted his game to newer players but when did it become about long rallies ?

Sometimes I get frustrated watching Rafa, Andy etc and think "ffs ! Can you not hit a drop shot, take a chance on a short ball and end the rally earlier" ?!

OP posts:
MrsVamos · 01/07/2014 22:51

Oh my goodness.

3 setter, you think ?!

OP posts:
Raahh · 01/07/2014 22:54

I have seen Rafa move net-wards more recently, as he's had to adapt his game. I've even noticed at RG, not so many long, long rallies.

I never find Rafa boring, because he is so quick around the court- and has some fantastic passing shots. He always seems to work so hard.

Raahh · 01/07/2014 22:56

MrsV- could potentially be a Stich/Edberg 7-6 7-6 7-6 situation. It will be whoever holds their nerve during the tie breaks. I'm not sure it will be the most interesting match to watch- but it will be a masterclass in servingGrin

MrsVamos · 01/07/2014 22:58

Yeah, but you're biased !

So if Rafa adapts, it must be others right ?

Cos its one way to win, as Rafa said re Williamses, by brute force ?
