Book and tv series spoilers allowed.

Did she? perhaps I'm misremembering. Still, it was all a bit 'loud monologues about our dastardly deeds that we wouldn't really be saying out loud just so the audience gets caught up' for me.

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 07/05/2014 16:27

loud monologues yes perfect description - it was like she was trying to say as much as possible and I agree I don't think it was all blurted out in the book and I don't think she said it to Sansa. I might be wrong - off to read the chapter again.

ZenGardener · 08/05/2014 02:17

I think Sansa is supposed to look a lot like her mother. That is the reason Little Finger wanted to take Sansa, as a substitute for Cat. It makes sense that Lysa would recognize her.

It's interesting for me what they have taken out and what they have left in. Hints for the future.

hildasmuriel · 08/05/2014 09:12

I noticed Littlefinger introduced Aleyne as his niece, in the book he says he is her father. I wonder if that will be significant. I also wondered if they will dye her hair as they do in the book, he did reference the hair saying to cover it. I don't think that's particularly significant just idle musing!

This series seems to be the one where they have strayed most from the books. I kept expecting Coldhands to turn up and lead away Bran and co.

From recollection there are at least 3 further big events to happen yet from the book. All of them are really strong visually for me so I will be very interested to see how my imaginings compare. Last series I thought the red wedding was done really well and was horrific but it could never build up that sense of foreboding that came reading the book.

ZenGardener · 08/05/2014 10:27

Spolier alert!!

Apparently there was a message from Aiden Gillen who plays Littlefinger on his FB page that said:

"If you feared this would not happen, don't be any more. We will see a gentleman with very cold hands, a lady with a heart of stone, and a man with a thousand eyes and one.
Knowledge is Power."

hildasmuriel · 08/05/2014 10:57

Zen that sounds very interesting, I love Aidan Gillen, just seems a cool bloke. That is actually only 1/3 events I was thinking of! So much happens in Book 3! In my head some of it comes later.

ZenGardener · 08/05/2014 13:50

I can't remember now as it has been a while since I read the books but didn't he split books 4 and 5 so he focused on half the characters in book 4 and the other half in book 5 but actually events ran more or less concurrently? But obviously the tv show can't do that so they have to mix up events from book 4 and book 5 to tell a fuller story.

I think it makes sense at this stage just to tell the story without worrying about which book it came from. I would rather they made 3 or 4 series before book 6 is released rather than trying to stick rigidly to one book per series.

I really want to re-read the last two books again!! I wish he'd hurry up with book 6. But doesn't everyone?

hildasmuriel · 08/05/2014 14:17

Yes 4 and 5 run concurrently so I imagine the TV series will have to do both at the same time, however it will be packed out by new characters and places alongside existing ones so I imagine will be quite a task.

They have already taken decisions to reveal things earlier than the books eg Reek / Theon last series rather than the mystery, I can imagine that the show may also become spoilery for the books, eg those events with the White Walkers and the baby, especially if GRRM doesn't crack on with book 6!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 08/05/2014 16:16

I'm just looking forward to seeing tv do the more bitter, angry Tyrion of book 5.

Re fitting the stories in, there must be some they can simplify - the Dorne stuff, the Martells, maybe some of the Iron Islands stuff.

anonacfr · 08/05/2014 23:43

God the Iron Island stuff was dull!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 09/05/2014 17:36

It was! I lost track of who everyone was, as well.

Theon's sister has been well cool on the tv one so far, though, so I'm sure they can make something of any scene with her in it.

AryaOfHouseSnark · 09/05/2014 18:50

I love tv Asha, although she has a different name that I have forgotten. Anyone know ?
I also found the iron island stuff really dull, I had to make myself read most of affc. Almost as dull as Daenerys Stombores Mereen adventures.

Yes, they must skip a lot of the Iron born stuff, obviously some of the Stannis and Davos stuff and the Dorne storyline, which is a shame because I liked the Dornish story.
In fact if I had to live anywhere in Westeros, it would be in Dorne. It seems a bit more civilised and fair than everywhere else.

ZenGardener · 10/05/2014 01:45

Is it Yana? Too lazy to google.

I thought the chat between Oberyn and Cersei was setting things up nicely to introduce Dorne.

hildasmuriel · 10/05/2014 11:11

It is Tara. Apparently Asha and Osha would be too confusing for those with US accents so they changed it

hildasmuriel · 10/05/2014 11:12

Aaargh Yara, bloody autocorrect!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 10/05/2014 11:21

Ah, so that's why.
Makes sense. I always read 'Sansa' with a short 'a' like cat but Tyrion always says Sarnsa, sometimes practically Sonsa; if they did the same to Asha it would be like Osha.

ZenGardener · 10/05/2014 11:27

Where is Osha? I want to see how she and Rickon are getting on.

I have trouble with the names too as they have odd spellings and I'm too lazy to check.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 10/05/2014 11:38

Osha and rickon haven't been seen since they disappeared together in the books either.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 10/05/2014 12:54

Hello! I've finally ploughed through the books so I can join you.

I thought the bit with Tyrion/Jaime in prison the other week was interestingly different from the books - Jaime seems to care more about Joffrey (or rather, you don't have evidence to the contrary) than he does in the books. But I wonder how the plot with Tywin and Tyrion will play out after that rather lovely bit of dialogue 'are you really asking if I'd kill your son?' - 'are you really asking if I'd kill my brother'? I mean, it was a lovely bit of male-male family solidarity, but ... Grin

I didn't get the Margaery thing being as creepy as someone said. I thought she'd gone in intending to do as she'd been told and found she couldn't, so she just kissed him on the forehead.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 10/05/2014 13:40

I just don't see how Shae-Tyrion is going to work, with them both being different from the book version.
GRRM sets up his violent side quite carefully - the bit when he slaps her for taunting him about his dad - so the murder doesn't come as a shock, but it's going to come from nowhere.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 10/05/2014 14:05

I'm really interested to see how they do it.

I can believe they'd have him just snap, but it's going to change how we see his character. I wondered if instead of having Varys there, they could have Varys do it, knowing what we know about Varys later on (which does come out of the blue).

ZenGardener · 10/05/2014 14:55

I was wondering because Charles Dance said in an interview that he had no plans to get naked so how would they will do that scene.

This is what I think will happen. Tywin said to Tyrion "The next whore I catch in your bed, I'll hang". I think he will hang Shae and Tyrion will kill him for it. I never understood why Tywin was in bed with Shae when he showed such abhorrence for Tyrion sleeping with prostitutes.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 10/05/2014 14:58

Ohhh, that could work.

I don't get the Shae/Tywin thing either.

AryaOfHouseSnark · 10/05/2014 16:04

There is a theory that Tywin was already dying when Tyrion shot him, possibly from a poison that rots the stomach, which would be an explanation for the smell at his funeral. It's been mentioned quite a few times in the books, but I cant remember what it is off the top of my head.

He was breaking fast with Varys and Oberyn the morning of Tyrions trial so either could have slipped it to him.

Anyway, if that theory is true, he could have just wanted one last night of love as he could have known he was dying.

I have often wondered if he was questioning Shae and she slipped in to his bed while he popped to the privy. Awful timing really, but how would she haver known that Tyrion would escape.

Either that or Varys planted Shae there, I don't know why.

I am looking forward to seeing how it's done though, along with "only Cat" and lady stone heart.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 10/05/2014 16:13

I can buy the poison theory.

I don't believe in Tywin as the one last night of love type. Especially since it's stressed so much how much his dead wife meant to him, and he comes across as so fastidious about sex.
