I love David Morrissey. My god there's so much on telly tonight I'm beside myself!

Nope that was Matthew Rhys, who isn't too bad either.

I just thought DM was super hot in this (terrible) programme. The beard gave me the shivers, the good sort of shivers!

would you have had filthy thoughts if he had a go at you for 'stealing' his seat though? Wink I would have told him to sod off ha!

I've also been told I have strange taste..and a taste for the older man (I'm 25, and 3 of my top 5 are in their 40s Blush )

LauraBridges · 08/01/2014 21:18

I've watched it all now. For some reason I read this or the other thread as saying he ended up with the other one than he ended up with but actually the ending is very like real life.

(Still don't fancy him one iota but obviously it just depends what your type is - slim blonde fit Nordic and never ever a beard is my type).

SwedishEdith · 08/01/2014 21:20

I've been thinking a bit more about this today...

I do think him staying with OC is the more realistic ending - I think that is what usually happens.

I don't think he would have had a wistful smile on his face when he saw SS at the station - I think he would look like he was trying to hide that "punched in the stomach" feeling. I think that's what usually happens whenever most people see an ex from an intense relationship.
And, yes, agree with what's already been posted that it looked like some scenes had been cut at the end to make it fit the 2 hours. The ending didn't fit properly with the rest of the programme.
I like DM - same age as me and from same city and I went to the Everyman Youth Theatre once so, obviously, I consider him to be my one that got away (Wink) but his character in this was a bit creepy/stalky. In RL, I think I would have started getting a different train/sitting in a different carriage occasionally.

Just finished watching on catch up. I found this quite unsettling viewing and as the daughter of a father who had more than one affair, sadly pretty true to life. DH (who watched it too) commented that we are a team and it would never happen to us but we currently have two young children which means we have a very active life together which revolves around them. This made me consider the reality of a situation when the kids don't bring you together quite like they do when they 'need' you soooo much and life just drifts on. I think it's a bit frightening really.

PaulMcGannsMistress · 08/01/2014 21:58

DP watched it at the gym, ha de ha ha, and came home and gave me a big cuddle.

squoosh · 08/01/2014 22:03

I assume he doesn't know about your affair with Paul McGann? Wink

PaulMcGannsMistress · 08/01/2014 22:06

he he, nobody knows that, not even anyone on MN Wink

LibraryBook · 08/01/2014 22:09

I think DM is ewww in this. The beard is just disgusting. Just found myself thinking ugh when she was kissing him. The attraction wasn't believable, he looked like a smelly old man.

It was really shit telly and I'm disgusted with myself for watching, even though I only watched the second part. OC was terrific.

squoosh · 08/01/2014 22:17

'Smelly old man'!? I mean really!

My nether regions contracted in joy every time he was on screen.

CosyTeaBags · 08/01/2014 22:19

I thought the circumstances of how they just drifted into an affair quite realistic.

I also thought it was sad that they were creating memories together on their day out on London, and taking photos that they could never keep. That's the reality of an affair - you can't enjoy your time together like you would if you were a bona fide couple.

But I also thought it was very unrealistic when they spotted each other at the end and just smiled happily. No way would that happen IRL.

My DPs ex W had an affair. My married sister is currently having an affair with a married man. DP and i watched this together, made me sad

LibraryBook · 08/01/2014 22:30

Squoosh Grin there really is someone for everyone.

I too think the drifting into an affair is entirely possible like that. But not those two characters. that young woman who works in a gym and lives with (and is engaged to) Neanderthal man would NOT have her head turned by middle-aged beardy, I don't think.

LibraryBook · 08/01/2014 22:31

Cosyteabags - sorry you were sad. I found the cafe scene quite sad. Him emoting all over his children. Grin

LibraryBook · 08/01/2014 22:32

Sorry that was meant to be a Sad

charlieandlola · 08/01/2014 22:34

Voyueristic tosh. Quite disappointed in Sheridan Smith for doing this programme.

LucyLasticBand · 09/01/2014 06:33

i loved it, sat watching the whole 2 episodes in one. minus 10 minutes i missed,
loved david morrissey, swooned

they were both such terrific actors

LucyLasticBand · 09/01/2014 06:34

I thought the ending was realistic tbh.

I didn't get the feeling that he had been unhappy with his wife, nor that the SS made him especially happy.

At the end I had the feeling that he was pleased to see her happy & that she was pleased to see him obviously OK & working again.

DeckSwabber · 09/01/2014 08:10

My interpretation:

Sally had already had one bad marriage and was in a dangerous relationship that she didn't know how to get out of. He was controlling and violent underneath his 'devotion', and objectified her. In a few years she would have been a wreck.

Carl was also at a very low ebb, MLC, bully of a boss, relationship with wife and kids in the doldrums.

Being with Carl, who is basically a kind man, gives Sally what she needs to get out of her bad relationship, and ultimately the strength to end both relationships properly.

Because Carl and his wife basically do love each other they survive. He gets a better job where he isn't bullied any more, and he appreciates his wife & kids more.

Carl is happy at the end because he can see she is stronger and happy, and this brings him some closure.

It was painful to watch, but I liked it.

BrokenNarwhal · 09/01/2014 13:24

Frighteningly realistic.

Totally heartbreaking to watch.

Wonderfully acted.

(From a "sally" that returned to a "ryan")

Wingedharpy · 09/01/2014 14:07

I'm with you DeckSwabber.
That's how I saw it too.
As well as Carl appreciating his wife and kids more at the end, they also appreciated him more.
He had become almost invisible in his home prior to the affair (like the scene where he was leaving for work and shouted bye to everyone and no-one answered him).
I thought that what Carl and Sally found in each other was someone who listened to them.

LauraBridges · 09/01/2014 17:00

I thought he was like a "smelly old man too" but obviously people on the thread fancied him!
In real life people tend not to leave their spouse if they have an affair but my experience of 3 male friends who had affairs is that the marriage is never quite the same. One found his wife tried to accept it but in the end threw him out (he did marry the mistress and had more children). Another - they have not divorced but live apart and he only goes to the family house the weekends she isn't at etc. In other words it is hard to carry on with happy family life after an affair even if they stay together.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/01/2014 22:16

Proves affairs destroy relationships :(

Sm saying he would forgive ss as wedding all planned

But

So 2yrs on neither of them were with their partners then?

Oc and dm spilt up

Ss didn't marry sm as no ring and wasn't him at station

So would ss and dm get back together?
