So when Martin and Saga speak are you saying he speaks in Danish and she speaks in Swedish!!

Exactly this

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 04/02/2014 09:17

I don't see how Martin would have got away with it even without Saga turning him in - his visit would have been noted at the prison and at some point in putting together the case file the missing poison would surely have been discovered.

In Danish prisons, do they really let the fathers of murdered sons give food and drink to their murderer?

rumbelina · 04/02/2014 09:47

I thought people further upthread had said the writer doesn't even know who killed Gertrud.

I think Martin killed Jens definitely. He had said Jens was out of his head after he'd made him realise the awful things he'd done.

Then when he was rejected by Mette he said their r/ship had started to break down when Jens came along. Then Jens came back into his head.

I think he realised he'd never get rid of him unless he was dead. I also think Martin knew he'd get caught but didn't care, as he'd said he had nothing left to lose (or words to that effect).

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 04/02/2014 10:46

Back in the day I remember people surprised at Morse's sidekick Lewis being a Geordie and his accent standing out like a sore thumb.

Danish and Swedish - maybe that accounts for Saga's slightly baffled look at times beyond the is-she-on-the-spectrum issue.

LizLemongrass · 04/02/2014 10:46

Im confused by danish speaker spealing fluent swedish with a stockholm accent. Is that not just putting on a accent??

SoulJacker · 04/02/2014 10:53

No, because Danish and Swedish are different languages!

CurrerBell · 04/02/2014 11:06

Donkeys I think you're right - the two languages must add to Saga's look of bafflement at times, and there's probably a lot of cultural differences between Swedes/Danes we miss out on. Sofia Helin said it was like being behind a glass screen.

I can mostly tell the difference between Swedish and Danish now, but only after watching a LOT of Wallander, Arne Dahl, Killing, Borgen etc. Swedish is beautiful in a melodic kind of way, but I find it easier to tune in to Danish somehow.

I grew up in Yorkshire and am fascinated by the Scandinavian influence on our dialect. My grandparents used a lot of dialect words e.g. 'laikin' about' to mean playing, having 'lugs' in your hair. I would love to study it properly!

LizLemongrass · 04/02/2014 13:05

Bairns! That is skandy i think
U here that in parts of ireland.
I just cant seem to grasp the extent of the difference/ similarity.
Pre -bridge, i thought they were two different languages. This thread was what made me think it wasmore of an accent thing.

LaVolcan · 04/02/2014 13:55

'Lugs' is Scandinavian then? That explains it. It's a word I am very familiar with, but my southern English family look blank when I talk about getting the lugs out of your hair.

LizLemongrass · 04/02/2014 16:14

Btw, id like to thank yall..... oscar style speech here. I was dual screening on sat 4th jan, mning and scrolling thru channels. Spotted the bridge is back thread two minutes b4 programme started. Stroke of good luck.

Having missed series one im now watching that on daily motion. I will regret it when i find out how mych ive exceeded by data balance!!

But hard to stop. Also ordered series one of borgen. Hope that eases me out of bridge withrawal symptoms.

coffeeinbed · 04/02/2014 16:38

Somehow I managed not to see Borgen.
I might have to remedy this.

coffeeinbed · 04/02/2014 16:39

I do like good old Walander though.

LizLemongrass · 04/02/2014 17:07

I hope my borgen s01 arrives b4 weekend. Will continue as beforw. But there will b no thread to discuss theories:-/

Wallander . Is that films? I saw something on amazon and it looked like 7 films. Before series with long drawn out "arcs" .

coffeeinbed · 04/02/2014 17:13

Yep.
Well, TV ones after the books.

there's the swedish ones and the UK remakes with Kenneth Branagh.

CurrerBell · 04/02/2014 17:46

Krister Henriksson is the best Wallander IMHO - I think there are two Swedish version as well as the British remake. Johanna Salstrom as his daughter, and Ola Rapace - such brilliant and moving drama as the characters develop.

Have just read that 3/4 of Yorkshire dialect words are of Danish origin! My Grandad used to say 'I'm brussen' after a meal (meaning I'm full), also 'snicket' to mean a narrow alleyway. When I moved down south there were lots of words/phrases I used that no one else understood.

MrsFlorrick · 04/02/2014 21:11

Yes there are lots of misunderstanding between Danes and Swedes. Lots that we joke about. Eg "taske" in Danish is a handbag, "taska" in Swedish is an old hooker type person.

Only a generation ago we didn't really understand each other and used English to communicate. My grandmother spoke fluent English and German but couldn't comprehend a word of Swedish.

I grew up watching both Danish and Swedish TV so Swedish is my first foreign language. I learnt the written part from watching British programmes on Swedish TV with Swedish subtitles.

It's really when they started to broadcast tv with stronger signals, we watched each other programmes and that's how the yoofs of today can all understand each other.

Liz. "Bairns" yes. It's "barn" in Swedish and "børn" in Danish. Grin

It's easier for Brits to tune into Danish because sentence structure is very similar. Grin

SoulJacker · 04/02/2014 23:26

Partly depends on where you grew up, OH is from Jutland so their stronger tv signals came from Germany :)

So most of his family speak danish, english and german, even the 4 year olds! Feel quite inadequate when i'm over there!

Bunbaker · 05/02/2014 08:02

"Krister Henriksson is the best Wallander IMHO"

Yes he is. I didn't much like that other shambling hulk, and they should never have bothered with the English version.

LaVolcan · 05/02/2014 08:48

Ah, but I think that Kenneth Branagh's versions paved the way for all the others. The BBC then realised that they could show the Swedish ones, which were a success, so then they bought The Killing..... and the rest is history, as they say.

LizLemongrass · 05/02/2014 11:06

and mrsflorrick, would it just be the odd word that was different in swedish and danish?

I know it seems like I keep asking more or less the same question here, but if you talk slowly to a Swede in Danish, you'll be understood? and where words differ and the swedish use a totally different word from the danish one, do you know that? when you're listening to swedish is it just like you have to concentrate a bit harder?

I really wish I could grasp this! I will have to learn Danish!!! just so that I can finally get the extent of the difference/similarity

Bunbaker · 05/02/2014 11:56

I think you're right LaVolcan

HermioneWeasley · 05/02/2014 19:41

Well, that was bloody marvellous. Can't wait for season 3!

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 05/02/2014 19:46

I'm reeatching it now to look for clues!

mizu · 05/02/2014 21:49

Yes, get the idea that we would understand a bit of Danish over Swedish.

I am a language teacher and before watching Borgen had never heard either language at any length. First i was fasinated by how different Danish was to any other language i had heard. Then I started to get it a little, I love the sound of it, a bit Geordie at times yes?

As for the Swedish, didn't understand any of it Grin but have absolutely loved this series. Can't believe we will have to wait so long for series 3.

LizLemongrass · 05/02/2014 22:08

I cant keep track of which language it is but i felt like loads words the same! Come, sit nair, hungry, ok!
Feel like if i watched ENOUGH scandinavian tv i could pick it up. Am i delusional?
