I have another dumb question - when was his part in ending the time war made clear? Was it during CE's reign as doctor?

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister · 26/11/2013 07:48

It's been revealed in drubs and drabs. CE was tormented by something he did, DT mentioned bits ( mainly in relation to the master) and MS told Clara.

Oodmaiden · 26/11/2013 07:52

Hmmm... I thought the 12 regenerations was something imposed by the Time Lords, and that since the Time Lords no longer exist (in the current universe/reality) then the restriction no longer exists. But I have no idea where I got that from....

SoupDragon · 26/11/2013 09:04

So this story must have been at the back of their minds for a while I guess - right from the start with CE's "tormented soul"

PaulMcGannsMistress · 26/11/2013 09:12

No, not all, not if RTD's The Writer's Tale is to be believed. They really do make it up as they go along, and the clever elements that fall into place are serendipitous. I like to think that, as the writers are generally fans, the collected knowledge and fanwank is sort of stored in their heads and unconsciously comes out in their writing Grin

SoupDragon · 26/11/2013 09:21

I didn't mean specifically this exact story in the same way, say, Bad Wolf was built up. More of a few building blocks for (assorted) potential story lines.

Anyway, I am currently crocheting a snow covered Tardis Christmas decoration for the Woolly Hugs Winston's Wish sale :)

PaulMcGannsMistress · 26/11/2013 09:32

Love a snow covered TARDIS. :)

magichamster · 26/11/2013 09:34

I'm new to the whovian threads to please be kind!

If the regen limit was set by the time lords and they're all now in some sort of suspended animation in a picture somewhere, may be they won't know how many there have been?

I kind of like the idea of a time lord office with them all sat round wearing their mad collars approving each regeneration in triplicate!

fancyanotherfez · 26/11/2013 09:40

Senua I would say the first rule of Doctor Who is just to go with it- to overanalyse leads to madness. It all makes perfect sense to me, whereas if I looked for plotholes and explainations, the whole thing would just be a humungus pile of nonsense! ( But I love it!) Also, the BBC are very lazy about updating that website, considering it's their flagship show and makes then millions around the world!

SoupDragon · 26/11/2013 09:46

I just go with it - I am utterly clueless as to any back stories, previous information etc. Each episode is just treated as pure entertainment :)

but... How were the Time Lords in a time bubble in that Master episode? I think it may have been discussed on the last thread.

FrankelInFoal · 26/11/2013 10:00

Soup my understanding was that the Time Lords were able to attempt to escape because they did so before the Doctor used The M

I give up on my fat fingers today! One last attempt:

The Time Lords acted in the few days before the Doctor used The Moment device. They retrospectively implanted the 4 beats into The Master's head to use it as a homing device IYSWIM.

PaulMcGannsMistress · 26/11/2013 10:12

It's bollocks, basically Grin

SoupDragon · 26/11/2013 10:20

Yep. Luckily these things don't bother me :o

PaulMcGannsMistress · 26/11/2013 10:23

That's part of the joy of it for me - it's one of the few shows where internal continuity doesn't really matter - you can fashion any old excuse to explain what you don't easily get, and it all works somehow, and even if it doesn't, it's good fun trying.

cornflakegirl · 26/11/2013 10:47

Yes, I agree about the wibbly-wobblyness. I was initially annoyed at John Hurt saying "I won't remember this, will I?", and the comment about the timestreams being out of synch - I thought it was lazy. But then I thought some more, and decided I was pleased they had at least attempted to address the internal continuity thing, and it was probably the least bad way of dealing with it!

whoturnedoutthelights · 26/11/2013 16:57

So do we know what the doctors memories on the time war/Gallifrey will be now?

SoupDragon · 26/11/2013 17:00

I imagine they have to be the same as they were before, otherwise decisions they made would be different.

PaulMcGannsMistress · 26/11/2013 17:07

Eccleston and Tennant's memories will remain the same - as far as they were concerned, Gallifrey burned and they were responsible for it. But Smith, and eventually Capaldi will know the truth.

I want to write Nine and Ten, but it doesn't work any more. That's going to take some getting used to :)

cornflakegirl · 26/11/2013 17:37

I tried to explain to DS (8) this morning why they are still Nine and Ten. He wasn't buying it!

cornflakegirl · 26/11/2013 17:38

I gave him the line about Hurt not referring to himself as Doctor. He said "but he's the War Doctor", like I was really stupid Wink

LetZygonsbeZygons · 26/11/2013 17:47

I KNOW ! I keep counting up to McGann and then stop. I don't know where to go after that Confused im just saying the actors names now!

Unrelated to present discussion, but I just watched The Sarah Jane Adventures with Jo Grant in. I didn't feel old up to now, even though I watched the 1st Dr Who epi when it originally went out (Ok prob the repeat the next week) - but Jo Grant as a granny, even a feisty one, did make me rather feel my age.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 26/11/2013 19:13

Perhaps they are Nineish and Tenish?
