I know , my DH is the same, he is able to make the decision as to what to eat based upon whether he is hungry or not. That ability would be my super hero ability.

rootypig · 11/10/2013 23:00

I am rather late to this discussion but would like to chip in - to me it made sense to make a vegetable non-dairy cake. Because vegetables are a really nice substitute for dairy fats in a cake - for flavour and moistness and structure.

But I did think they were paying lip service and it was all a bit vague. Maybe that's why Paul and Mary were so sour about it all?

Second Harry Eastwood's book. Mine is in a box being shipped across the Atlantic at the mo but think there's a parsnip recipe in it Russians Smile

rootypig · 11/10/2013 23:00

ps mignonette what is not hungry? Confused

mignonette · 11/10/2013 23:18

Rooty Grin. Not Hungry is like Australia for me- somewhere I have never been!

I agree about the emulsifying ability of some vegetables. They can become really 'creamy' hence the use of courgettes in Chocolate Cake. They make this cake really moist.

Mary is not exactly an Iconoclast. Traditional is the name of the game.

rootypig · 11/10/2013 23:20

Grin Grin

perhaps Not Hungry is near Burstingly Full, or Pleasantly Sick? both places I visit regularly Grin

coffeeinbed · 12/10/2013 09:38

There's a leaflet in the Telegraph today with PH pie recipes.
there's a beetroot pie.
Revolting, What in the name of all that's sweet and flaky is that abomination!

mignonette · 12/10/2013 18:32

I saw that Beetroot tart thing too. I can only imagine there is copious amounts of sugar and spices to counteract the dusty mustiness it can have. Of course young beetroot is sweeter but not everybody grows it and shop beetroot can be as old as Methusalah.

Rooty Grin.

After two rounds, surely Francis and Kimberley are safely through to next week no matter what happens in the showstopper?

deepfriedsage · 15/10/2013 21:42

What did the Welch lady say to the other lady?

rootypig · 16/10/2013 02:50

Kimberly is getting more and more annoying, if that is at all possible! so effin pleased with herself.

RaisingthedeadArizona · 16/10/2013 06:04

Very late to this thread.

It's like Kimberly is treating this as a practice run for her own tv series. I really took to her at the start but as the weeks have gone on she seems more and more self-satisfied. It's ok to be confident (and at the other end of the spectrum, Ruby's "OhGodthisisterrible" shtick is just as irritating imo), but there's a fine line between quietly confident and smug. I would like Francis to win now. But think it will be Kimberly

Mominatrix · 16/10/2013 06:18

Agree that Kimberly will probably win, however, she grates on me precisely for her smugness. Her I-Know-It-all attitude indicated in her commentary on processes and her steely hyper-competitiveness really don't make me like her very much. The looks on her face when the judges don't like what she does are quite...cold. Frances has fantastic food presentation ideas, but I do agree that her style does trump her substance. Ruby is probably a naturally gifted baker, but is just a mess - perhaps it is a lack of maturity?

Not crazy on any of the contestants left. My favourite was Christine, but she is out.

ClarisseVonTrumpington · 16/10/2013 06:37

Anyone else scandalised at the blatant favouritism towards Ruby and harshness towards Francis (didn't make your own pots last week - oh Ye gods, call the police). It's almost as if her stuff needs to look a complete shambles like Ruby's before they give her a break. Thank goodness they liked the veg patch canapés - I thought Francis was going to cry. Every single time something isn't great - which happens to all the bakers, they ring out the style over substance mantra. So unfair! She was very over the top at the beginning but now she just meets the brief each time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a great fan of Francis particularly but unless it's an editing thing the favouritism is putting me off Bake Off this year.

Oh and FFS Ruby - cheer up you miserable git
Kimberly - just insufferably smug.

Tbh it all went down hill after Howard left.

mignonette · 16/10/2013 13:10

It has already been made clear by a member of the production team on the other thread that Kimberleys comments are made as a response to an off camera question by those filming. They are not off the cuff commentaries.

It is worth remembering that the cut aways to contestants faces during judging may not actually correspond timing wise to what is going on at the time! They film hundreds of these and match them up in post production. Don't believe everything you see. This is television and has been micro directed to the nth degree.

AntoinetteCosway · 16/10/2013 16:05

Ruby was a disaster last night-Beca was far better than her. But then Beca has been less consistently good to this point I suppose. I think Ruby will win but I still hope Kimberley does. I don't think she's mean or cold-am certain it's editing.

rootypig · 16/10/2013 16:37

mignonette I do try to appreciate that, my cousin works cutting TV shows and says they take appalling liberties. But even allowing for editing, Kimberly's manner when she's doing her explanations is just so irritating. The other contestants manage to describe what they're doing without intimating that they are delivering a masterclass Hmm. Plus in the little interviews they do outside the tent later, she is unbearable! soooooooo smug. She is the sort of girl I hated having to be in the class with at school Grin

Yes Clarisse I agree about Frances, was just posting on the other thread about it (yes I am on two Bake Off threads Grin)

Antoinette I think Beca was more of a disaster last night - they hated her canapes and showstopper and she came third in the technical. They really like Ruby's opera cake and quite liked her canapes, though of course her technical was a disaster.

Sunnymeg · 16/10/2013 17:12

I have a sneaky feeling that Frances' flavours will come together and she will end up winning. Out of the three who are left, I think she would produce the most memorable cook book.

yesbutnobut · 16/10/2013 18:39

I agree with Sunnymeg that (as with last year when James won) Frances may well win. ` i can see her miraculously producing something where style and substance are in perfect harmony, having learned her lesson, and will win. Especially as in the final they have to produce something spectacular. I'd love to see her win as the judges have been harsh towards her.

mignonette · 16/10/2013 18:44

Rooty Grin

sicily1921 · 16/10/2013 22:53

Francis gets my vote, if she can hold the flavours together with her brilliant designs she will produce some fantastic stuff in the final.

BadgersNadgers · 17/10/2013 08:27

I'm team Frances too. This week the Ruby favouritism gave me the rage.

QueenoftheSarf · 17/10/2013 13:57

This is no competition now. The judges are so biased towards Ruby it's a waste of time the other two putting themselves out bothering to compete. I'd be happy if either Frances or Kimberly won - both deserve to equally. However, Ruby has consistently failed yet has never once been roundly chastised for it by Hollywood, who is positively caustic and downright cruel in his critiques of other contestants' bakes. Last night Ruby's canapés looked a right mess and her opera cake looked like it'd been baked by a group of hapless 9 year olds.

If I had to pick a winner though, personally I'd go for Frances. She seems so lovely. I think she just edges it and last night they were downright nasty abut her opera cake. It made me so cross.

LaVitaBellissima · 17/10/2013 17:44

I think Francis will win.

I'm not sure why everyone is getting so cross about Ruby, she obviously has a natural talent, and if it tastes good she has deserved to stay in, but ultimately her bad presentation puts Francis in No1 position.

HowlerMonkey · 21/10/2013 10:12

To everyone who is doing this, please stop calling Frances Francis. It is making my eyes itch.

Her name is Frances. Frances. FRANCES!

bushkate55 · 21/10/2013 11:15

IT has to be Kimberley, consistently good results
