I don't think Ruby writes that well and why is accusations of flirting with Paul Hollywood "inevitable"? Clearly playing into the we-can-only-be-on-telly-because-we-are-pretty or else she thinks she is gorgeous.

ViviPru · 23/10/2013 16:12

mignonette there must be a media blackout on it too otherwise less scrupulous people who find out in similar circs to you would be cashing it in with the press....

mignonnette · 23/10/2013 16:46

I am amazed and pleased that it was kept quiet. I know there are contracts stipulating what can and cannot be discussed and with whom but they cannot put an entire extended family under contract and there are a lot of people who know. I would never have ruined it for anybody. I didn't tell my DH or my daughter who the winner was.

Eastwickwitch · 23/10/2013 16:51

mignonnette, you could've put a bet on!
I'm delighted we didn't know the result, but I wonder what all that kerfuffle with Raymond Blanc was about.

mignonnette · 23/10/2013 16:57

I did consider it but one of my longest held moral thingies is no gambling because I do have well controlled compulsive tendencies and I think it might open a can of worms. Plus I think it might be illegal to bet when you have insider information? Does anybody know?

Bogeyface · 23/10/2013 18:41

Couldnt stand Frances and her simpering, her bakes were consistently poor compared to her decorating, and Ruby with her teenage tantrummy pouts pissed me off too so I wanted Kimberley to win.

fancyanother · 23/10/2013 18:48

i disagree with Ruby's article too. I don't use Twitter, so don't know about all the nastiness and mysogony she complained about, but the criticism of her, I think is fair. She seemed to be constantly moaning and using false modesty to fish for compliments. Her reactions to the criticisms in newspapers and social media don't come across as someone who is crippled by lack of self confidence. If anything, she was the one playing up to the simpering wet female stereotype, and it seemed as if she was doing it to gain an advantage.

ZombieZing · 23/10/2013 18:57

who the hell is Raymond Blanc?

edam · 23/10/2013 19:35

Constantly moaning and fishing for compliments is partly in the edit though - it's the director and editors who select which shots they use, out of hours of filming. There's something like at least 16 hours of filming, if not more, which they edit down to make an interesting programme.

Admittedly they couldn't show Ruby putting her head on one side and saying she thought her bake would be awful if she hadn't said it... but it's only a few seconds out of those 16+ hours, there will be lots of other stuff she said and did that was left out.

Merguez · 23/10/2013 19:58

You don't have to be on Twitter to read some of the misogynistic comments addressed at Ruby and Kimberley. There have been plenty on this thread.

EugenesAxe · 24/10/2013 13:58

Personally I'm glad Frances won. I think Ruby would have done it had her final showstopper not been so abysmally decorated.... if they had given it to her based on the overall strength of her baking (which was undoubtedly excellent; that picnic pie!), the show would have been ridiculed using that as the target.

I got a bit narked when she was awarded Star Baker for that pants looking allotment thing. 'The chocolate work is good' - oh, right Paul... so cracked and fingerprinted chocolate is OK because it's been tempered? Hmm

I couldn't help laughing at Paul's musing over Ruby's cakes in the showstopper, when he ended with an incredulous 'I think it's been overbaked' - I half expected a 'Dah- Dah- DDDDAAAAAAAH!!!' sound effect over the top.

Oblomov · 24/10/2013 17:39

Was very surprised Frances won. Out of the three, I thought she had the least chance.
I am still not entirely sure on why she won. What was Paul and Mary's criteria. It was a shock to me.
Pleased for her. But just surprised.

Oblomov · 24/10/2013 17:44

I thought all the wedding cakes were really really poor. I know the ones you see made by cake shops , ebay, etc, take hours, and the contestants didn't have that long. But even then, I thought the finished product, from all 3 of them was shockingly terrible.

flippinada · 24/10/2013 17:46

When I think about it, I wonder it wasn't cleverly edited to make Frances' win seem like a bit surprise - so we saw Frances as the underdog, Ruby as the favourite/judges pet and Kimberley as the slightly too big for their boots front runner?

Replace Frances with John, Ruby with James and Kimberley with Brendan...they did the same last year.

flippinada · 24/10/2013 17:47

I wonder if it wasn't celeverly edited...

flippinada · 24/10/2013 17:47

FGS..cleverly.

BigBoPeep · 24/10/2013 19:54

Ruby's article merely confirms her fakery throughout for me. She now seems keen to distance herself from the GBBO 'silliness' and reinvent herself as 'serious food writer'....which just so happened to be the career she wanted. Maybe fans don't like being used, Ruby?

Davros · 24/10/2013 22:39

I'm prepared to believe that zither worst if Ruby, and all of them vine to that, was down to editing but I'm very pleased that Frances won.
