I will eat my hat shaped cake if Ruby doesn't win.

But I think it should be Kimberley or Frances - can't really choose between them. I have nothing against Ruby but IMO her baking skills (and results) are slightly more hit and miss than those of the other two finalists.

Animation · 22/10/2013 11:26

Paul Hollywood looks too good from every angle and his eyes are always come to bed eyes. Why should I be so irritated by this Confused

KatoPotato · 22/10/2013 11:27

Oh my Day(ly mail)s!

Article on the final three contestants quote:

'Who is she? Raised by bookshop owners in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, snaggle-toothed Frances has been a slow-burner on GBBO.'

Snaggle toothed? horrid!

KatoPotato · 22/10/2013 11:28

Ruby: Who is she? The eldest of four children from Southend, Essex, with a brain to match the good looks which saw her become a model in her teens.

Kimberly: Who is she? A self-made woman who can seemingly turn her hand to anything.

mignonnetteZOMBIEKILLEROFHQ · 22/10/2013 11:28

Vile. because Paul Dacre is such a fucking heart throb?

I really hope Frances wins, I think she's incredibly creative and reacts so well to the never ending criticism she gets. She is neither smug nor simpering.

Xoanon · 22/10/2013 13:32

I very much liked Frances's come back to the welsh one last week when the welsh one was being somewhat unkind.

Evbev · 22/10/2013 14:00

I think it's really unfair all the negative attention on Ruby. The only reason people are reacting to the way she is treated is due to the affair Paul Hollywood had. Very simple. If this was last year, we would have observed a very insecure girl who everyone on The British Bakeoff were extra nice to; Mel, Mary and Paul all were extra nice to her because her of her insecurity. It has tainted people's way of watching the programme, including me.

Xoanon · 22/10/2013 14:01

I think it's outrageous really. :(

KateMumsnet · 22/10/2013 14:40

Hello everyone

Just to let you know that we've a guest blog from previous GBBO finalist Holly Bell, over thisaway...

birdbrain21 · 22/10/2013 15:04

thanks for the article liza
Just to note a quote from kimberly in it, she's a physcolgist and seems to be doing more qualifications ‘In the week of the final I had three essays to hand in. It was horrific why does ruby's studying and therefore lack of time to practice get mentioned the whole time and kimberly working long days and studying on top of that never get mentioned?! I'm not anti-Ruby I enjoy the show and don't really care any more who wins but I don't feel we are given the full story of the cotestants...

ZombieZing · 22/10/2013 15:19

birdbrain

I picked up on that too and couldn't agree with you more.

thing is I like Ruby, but she seems a bit miserable. Kimberly's personality comes across much nicer - although that is not what they are judged on, hopefully.

mignonnetteZOMBIEKILLEROFHQ · 22/10/2013 15:41

I mentioned on the other thread about Kimberleys studies being more arduous than a certain other contestants. I also mentioned her ambitions w/ regard to wanting to open a charitable bake shop/enterprise where less materially blessed children could have birthday parties.

I like Kimberley because I like her ambitions. Like Brendan's they involve giving back. I am very Hmm about how she has been edited. very Hmm.

Ruby wants to be a food writer. She'll need a good editor.

BigBoPeep · 22/10/2013 15:48

My opinion of ruby has nothing to do with hollywood's affair, I am a brand new bakeoff convert, and simply find her to be a wet blanket, the woe is me is annoying. and her baking ain't all that! She can pull it out of the bag sometimes...but so can I, I have the sense to stay home though Grin

BohemianRaspberry · 22/10/2013 16:05

I find Ruby's "Oh it's really bad." syndrome quite annoying - at first I felt sorry for her but as she's won star baker twice, you'd have thought she'd suck it up a little. I know it sounds cruel but I don't like people who don't seen to enjoy what they cook and every always seems so horribly difficult for her.
Kimberly and Frances actually seem to enjoy what they're doing and make me want to cook what they are cooking.

honeybeeridiculous · 22/10/2013 16:16

Totally agree with you bigbopeep Grin

Xoanon · 22/10/2013 16:42

Big Ruby has won star baker 3 times. And she has also won the tech challenge a couple of times. Clearly she has low self esteem - it's not unknown for high achieving young women. I agree with you that she doesn't seem to enjoy all the different types of baking they do - she has some clear weaknesses (puddings) but also clear strengths (bread) where she is obviously miles better than the rest. The difference between her and kimberley is that Kimberley is at worst alright and at best good at everything. Every single aspect. Ruby's worst is much worse, but her best is clearly better (or her overall stats wouldn't be so much better).

But we aren't tasting the food. So if we re ignoring the judges who over the course of the whole programme have clearly rated ruby higher, it comes down to either what the baking looks like (but it's not an art competition) or personality (which has nothing to do with baking). I have known young women/girls with esteem issues and I know how horrible it is for them. I have also known over confident brash people and on the whole, it's a type of person I don't like. So I prefer ruby's personality. But each to their own. I'm convinced Frances is going to win because that's the narrative - this will be the week she does something that looks a bit meh but tastes fabulous and so she will have completed her journey and will therefore win because she wil finally have admitted that Mary Berry is right. Betcha.

Pigeonpair1 · 22/10/2013 16:58

I don't think Ruby will win/has won. She would not be allowed to respond to all those twitter messages in the mardy way she has as the BBC would want her on her best behaviour for any future work.

Xoanon · 22/10/2013 17:06

pigeon I've hardly ever met anyone else who uses the term mardy! Grin Are you from wiltshire by any chance?

I don't think she's been that mardy to be honest. She's had some vile tweets directed at her. She doesn't at all deserve the treatment she has received from either the media or some of the grottier dregs of the internet.

Pigeonpair1 · 22/10/2013 17:24

Ha Ha - no - I am from Market Harborough funnily enough but now live in London! I agree a lot of the tweets are really mean but I feel if she had won, the BBC would have told to just suck it up and say nothing. We'll see!

BohemianRaspberry · 22/10/2013 17:48

Xoanon - sorry about the error (three times winning star baker not two).

I realise she has low self-esteem (I have it myself running alongside Dep/Anx), doesn't deserve the viciousness and I know it's heavily edited to make this so.

I just usually like to get/peruse the cookery books for some of the finalists and if Ruby won, I don't think I would.

mignonnetteZOMBIEKILLEROFHQ · 22/10/2013 17:50

Xoanon

I use mardy because my Mother is from the Midlands as are my Grandparents. I love that word. Whenever I read it, it sounds in my head as my grandfathers voice!

awaynboilyurheid · 22/10/2013 18:10

Come on Ruby Ruby Ruby! but secretly think Francis will just clinch it which is fine too, they are all soooo talented at this stage amazing women. going to miss GBBO so much

peachypips · 22/10/2013 18:37

I really like Frances and Kimberley- looking forward to it so much!
