Janus he has only been there a year. I think his influence appeared to be extremely limited and when he did intervene he got it wrong. As I said it may well be down to editing and he may actually be an amazingly inspirational head in RL. I just didn't see any of that.

I think the Head has come across badly and has made some serious errors of judgement, lots of letting off persistent bad behaviour and then coming down like a ton of bricks on one misdemeanour from good kids. Loved the teacher tonight!

Ignoring the obviously serious discussion around his capability and effectiveness as a headteacher, I wouldn't kick Mr Mitchell out of bed, he's lovely

or Mr Burton but he hasn't got quite the same authoritative air

I loved this entire series and was a complete blubbering mess when Musharrif gave his speech to the rest of year 11.
Mr Burton is just fab.

Just watched it with my severely dyslexic ds's who has just started y7. He was very inspired by Musharats bravery and determination to do well at school and beyond. DS's school are brilliant with him and he loves it. I salute those teachers who go above and beyond for each and every child.

The work done with Musharraf is work the teacher can rightly be proud of. And Musharraf himself responded so well to that support. I do hope that the college he goes to will build on this work hehas such potential.

I don't think I could function on a daily basis if I cried at work as much as Mrs.Marsden seems to, though tonight granted she had good reason.

This is the only episode I have ever watched but I was in tears at the end. Musharraf is such a lovely kid and so brave I was delighted for him. And as for Mr Burton - what a star!

As I say, I haven't seen any of the others and wondered is this meant to be a "challenging" school generally or is it that we only see those forms that are. I wondered whether there are lots of pupils elsewhere keeping their heads down and behaving and getting stacks of good GCSEs but they don't make such good tele.

I blubbed and blubbed last night. I was pottering about hanging washing and was stopped in my tracks when u heard musharaf's words flowing out of him. it was an amazing moment.

wrt the head, i'm torn. I do think he handled the challenging behaviours badly but he has without a doubt turned the results around in the time he has been there. he certainly creates a platform for communication between himself and the pupils rather than a head teacher you hide from when you see him in the corridor because he is so frightening (mine). pupils aren't going to take on board a motivational speech or chat from someone they don't like. they'd more likely say "fuck that- i'm not working for him" but I can see how someone like Mr M (aswell as his team) get's them in a frame of mind that they want to make him proud which means knuckling down and working. and also, school should be a place of positivity, creating positive relationships with learning and authority which I think thornhill does for most. I also agree the programme may be edited to not show alot Mr M's work for various reasons- it's maybe too boring, maybe no permission from those pupils' parents, maybe issues are too sensitive, maybe he decided he wanted it to be about the pupils and other staff and not about what he does.

Whole family were in tears watching this last night!

Total and utter respect to all the teachers and staff who managed to put a smile of such utter joy on Musharaf's face. When he got his GSCE result we all stood up and clapped! Most of us take being able to talk for granted, and never think twice about the ability to do so, to watch him deliver that speech to his peer group was a moment of utter magic....

I was really moved by last night's episode too - English teacher was fantastic! But why would a child with such a bad stammer be expected to do a speaking exam? Are there no dispensations? A dyslexic child would get extra time or possibly a scribe so why was he expected to go ahead with this?

I thought last night's show was amazing and that the school teachers including the head have been fantastic. I really wish they were local to us so my DD could go there. Inspirational!

Just watched. Blubbed. Loved this series so much. I actually have a lot of respect for the head - however he's doing it, he's getting it done and has the right priorities.

Mr Burton is a fabulous teacher. It actually reminded me of a letter I started writing to 'my' Mr Burton several years ago. I've kept the file and add to it every few years. This has inspired me to go back to that letter, finish it off and send it to him to say thanks.

Teachers just don't get enough credit imho.

Mushrat and Mr Burton were on Five Live this morning, I cried all over again! they were both fabulous, Mushy was so lovely, I am so delighted he his getting all this positive attention.

haggisaggis, dyslexic children don't get scribes in English for fairly obvious reasons. I suppose similar reasoning may apply for the speaking test.

I loved the look of absolute incredulity and joy on Mr Burton's face when Musharraf was reading the poem. It must have been a wonderful experience to go through.

Re the head, he reminds me a bit of the drama teacher ds had. Ds described him as a bit of a mad giant, but he really enjoyed drama with him and made excellent progress. The children had a friendly relationship with him and used to tease him for his ambition to make it big and his efforts to get stand-up gigs. Boot's on the other foot now: he did make it big, is sadly no longer teaching, and you can probably guess who he is.

Loved this episode, dh and I both got a bit tearful. And I liked the head in an interview in the Yorkshire post admitting he'd got it wrong with that boy - Jean Luc? - by punishing him and not the girl who was bullying him.

5foot5, it's got a reputation (before this head) for being a rough school in a rough area. It's long been one you wouldn't choose. New head is trying to turn it round - and according to the Yorkshire Post, applications are up (at the moment it has several hundred spare places, because people avoid if they can/are clued up enough).
