WEDNESDAY 07 JUNE

Drama

The Kindness of Strangers

9:00pm - 10:30pm

ITV1 London

VIDEO Plus+: 7858
Subtitles, audio description, widescreen

Written by Kate O'Riordan

They come in for flak, these barmy ITV1 two-parters, and a lot of it's deserved, but some of them are fun in a rollicking-good-story sort of way. The Kindness of Strangers is a corker, thanks to three excellent, understated performances from its leads: Neil Pearson, Julie Graham and Hermione Norris. Pearson plays construction boss Joe, whose wife Ellie (Graham) becomes a mum again, to twin girls, at the age of 40 and finds the demands of late motherhood difficult to cope with. Her burdens are considerably eased when she bumps into Fiona (Norris), a poised, charming and intelligent widow who goes out of her way to become Ellie's friend. You will probably see exactly where all this is going, as Fiona makes herself indispensable, first to Ellie, and then to Joe. But it's a well-told tale that stays just the right side of melodrama. Concludes tomorrow at 9:00pm.

I'm sick of watching these promising-looking ITV dramas which are invariably crap (well, the ones I've seen are)

RTKangaMummy · 07/06/2006 19:44

SD I agree but I am just hoping this is better

spacedonkey · 07/06/2006 19:45

did you see that one called "The Best Man" recently with Keeley Hawes and Toby Stephens and that bloke out of Coupling?

It had the most glowing write up in the observer, so I watched it and it was utter crud!

RTKangaMummy · 07/06/2006 20:57

No I didn't

Is Toby stephens married to a MNetter?????

OP posts:
GDG · 07/06/2006 20:59

amber5 · 07/06/2006 22:35

loved julie graham in william and mary, but must say; her teeth bug me a little

vitomum · 07/06/2006 22:39

defo brill? db round here that means the 'dogs bollocks' (which is also very good!)

HarpsichordCarrier · 07/06/2006 22:40

WAS it deffo brill then? dh recorded it and might watch it if so
OR otherwise go to bed...
it is in your hands

RTKangaMummy · 07/06/2006 22:42

Yes sorry I am not allowed to put deffo brill in titles cos some people get annoyed with me

So I put DB instead Grin

Am I right in thinking that if she had swallowed the tablets rather than putting in water they would work correctly?

It is strange she hasn't had her teeth done but I guess it is her recognizable feature

SD what did you think of it

I did think it was good

OP posts:
GDG · 07/06/2006 22:42

Thought it was 'OK' - didn't have to think too much but it's all toooo predictable really.

RTKangaMummy · 07/06/2006 22:44

OP posts:
GDG · 07/06/2006 22:44

RTKangaMummy · 07/06/2006 22:46

I don't really want to name names really

it was a while ago

OP posts:
HarpsichordCarrier · 07/06/2006 22:49

you should trademark it RTKM
Deffo Brill â„¢

vitomum · 07/06/2006 22:49

i wondered about the tablets too but don;t think how she took them would have affected her. think it was meant to show the influence fiona had over her - even once ellie hated her she was still following her advice about the tablets.

amber5 · 07/06/2006 22:50

putting anti-depressants in water not only make them not as effective, but is a really scary thing to do around children - i keep thinking what if someone else picks up her glass...
