WEDNESDAY 07 JUNE

Drama

The Kindness of Strangers

9:00pm - 10:30pm

ITV1 London

VIDEO Plus+: 7858
Subtitles, audio description, widescreen

Written by Kate O'Riordan

They come in for flak, these barmy ITV1 two-parters, and a lot of it's deserved, but some of them are fun in a rollicking-good-story sort of way. The Kindness of Strangers is a corker, thanks to three excellent, understated performances from its leads: Neil Pearson, Julie Graham and Hermione Norris. Pearson plays construction boss Joe, whose wife Ellie (Graham) becomes a mum again, to twin girls, at the age of 40 and finds the demands of late motherhood difficult to cope with. Her burdens are considerably eased when she bumps into Fiona (Norris), a poised, charming and intelligent widow who goes out of her way to become Ellie's friend. You will probably see exactly where all this is going, as Fiona makes herself indispensable, first to Ellie, and then to Joe. But it's a well-told tale that stays just the right side of melodrama. Concludes tomorrow at 9:00pm.

Bloody brilliant wasn't it - have to pop out tonight to pick friend up but am making sure I am back before 9 to watch the conclusion!!!

DP reckons that HN's character is bonkers, I don't think it that straight forward - if it is I'm going to become a writer!!!!

Must be something to do with the dead husband being a doctor!!!

charliecat · 08/06/2006 20:42

bump, dont miss the 2nd bit :)

amber5 · 08/06/2006 22:53

ok so it was mildly entertaining but honestly; did anyone not get that that would be the ending???

mazzystar · 09/06/2006 08:43

What a rubbish ending. Totally lacking in twist or suspense. It would have been better if the Fiona character had killed the husband and Ellie had got the blame. Or if she and husband had been having a long-running affair. Or something. As it was they could have done it in one episode.

foxinsocks · 09/06/2006 10:03

ggirl, I thought it was a book when I heard the title (but realised I was getting it mixed up with The Comfort of Strangers, Ian McEwan)

I missed the middle bit as I was watching House (was brilliant last night) but thought the ending was pretty poor. I also get pissed off at these Hand that Rock the Cradle type women in dramas. Surely you would be suspicious of someone who became so friendly overnight??!!

IvortheEngine · 09/06/2006 10:14

Another vote here for the ending being very poor. I can't comment on the rest really as I was always doing something else as well as watching it and I missed out on quite a bit bar the ending.
