Anyone else watching?

I am, and for the life of me, and being a cynical bitch, i can't understand why two working professional parents haven't the education to buy a couple of carrots, a shin of beef, and a few onions.
I think theres more to this programme that meets the eye personally xx

GetStuffezd · 11/07/2013 20:12

Watching it too.
Toffee, I think similarly and those ingredients are in my basket every Saturday. Seven or eight quid's worth of ingredients does me four dinners during the week!

qualitytoffee · 11/07/2013 20:14

Sorry, me again, Grin or lentils and home made soup, with a carcass of chicken bones made with stock. I'm a single ma, and i'm always buying turkey legs about £4.00 and i can make it into last xx
The elderly man i feel really sorry for. xx

Pascha · 11/07/2013 20:14

Just switched on. I find myself being more careful about my portions now both children need feeding. Not quite one meal a day though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/07/2013 20:15

I think it's going to be interesting to see how it evolves through the program.

Toffee

It because they earn to much for any help (WTC/CTC) but pay maximum tax.

Yes they aren't giving full financial details of all the families involved.

Pascha · 11/07/2013 20:17

Twenty?

qualitytoffee · 11/07/2013 20:19

See, the thing is, we all are paying higher utility bills, i work full time, but that single parent (bless her) is going wrong somewhere! How the heck is she so broke that she can't eat herself?

bico · 11/07/2013 20:19

Interesting programme as it seems to be focusing on those people that we never hear much about.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/07/2013 20:20

It is bico, looking at more hidden poverty.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 11/07/2013 20:21

My heart is breaking for that elderly man. Surviving on that amount of food. He simply doesn't have enough money to buy meat for a meal, or veg. How can they feed him for £1.odd a day?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/07/2013 20:22

I wonder if mental health is playing into it a lot with all of these people. If you aren't eating properly depression can come into play and then it's harder to motivate yourself to eat well. Though clearly money is obv a big issue too.

When I was made redundant a couple of years ago I was amazed at how little there was available. All I was entitled to was a suspension in council tax and JSA. Nothing else at all as I'd had a good salary so above CTC limits (as based on previous year's income) and was a home owner (so no immediate access to housing benefit and something like a six month wait to get any mortgage interest support). Thankfully I got another job very quickly but I really worried about what I would do long term.

GetStuffezd · 11/07/2013 20:23

That poor old chap, when he was talking about food and drink programmes making him realise what he's missing out on. Sad

qualitytoffee · 11/07/2013 20:23

I agree Bico, but 2 carrots, a cheap chicken, can last for days i know,i've do it all the time!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/07/2013 20:23

James is being lovely.

OP posts:
gemdrop84 · 11/07/2013 20:23

Do feel sorry for the elderly gentleman, can't quite understand why the single mum couldn't have a slice of toast in the morning or porridge made with water.

PenguinBear · 11/07/2013 20:24

This program is incredibly upsetting. Look forward to seeing how it progresses! hope they have good suggestions and it gets happier.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 11/07/2013 20:24

What good is it spending £11 on salmon?

dingit · 11/07/2013 20:25

Agree gemdrop, a value loaf of bread would last all week for breakfast, surely?

intarsia · 11/07/2013 20:25

Salmon steaks are £1.56 in Aldi - 2 will do 3 people if bulked out with veg.

Lorelilee · 11/07/2013 20:25

It breaks my heart that people live like this - for whatever reason, with so many of us complaining about being skint if we can't afford a bottle of wine on a Friday night.

GetStuffezd · 11/07/2013 20:25

Exactly breakout!

bico · 11/07/2013 20:26

I suppose the salmon is a treat. It will be interesting to see how Richard translates this into more economical meals.

Slainte · 11/07/2013 20:27

Agreed breakout he's missed the point of the experiment surely? Why not get a few bottles of champagne to go with it??
