Anyone else watching?

OP posts:
bico · 11/07/2013 20:41

How many are they catering for?

HeadFairy · 11/07/2013 20:41

Princesssugar I didn't know that. It's good news!

qualitytoffee · 11/07/2013 20:41

I agree intarsia, but y'see in my crap opinion it makes me wonder how Joanna got so low, that sugar is preferable to toast, which makes me think that that wee pet has more problems than meets the eye.
I'm trying to be sympathetic with the couple though, and thats wrong of me, i just can't get it though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/07/2013 20:41

Will this have helped their lives long term?

Why's James in waitrose?? Not where I'd go for a budget shop

Badvoc · 11/07/2013 20:42

If you live in a village - like me - or don't have transport or can't go to 5 shops in one trip then it's very hard to shop around.
Boffinmums emergency weekly shopping list is one if the best I have seen nutritionally speaking but it's still £30 and that is still too much for many (£120a month)
Where i live We have no butchers, grocers, nothing.
So it's supermarkets or nothing.
We do grow some of our own veg, herbs etc.
Have cut down on meat but we do eat a lot of fresh fruit and veg which adds up.
I bake but tbh ATM I can buy it cheaper (sponge cake £1 for example)
I don't use the reduced section as I am never there at the right time it seems.

ggirl · 11/07/2013 20:43

chickens are tiny though, besides a broth or maybe a rissotto as well as the roast chicken can it actually last a week??
We eat the whole chicken in one sitting

Chubfuddler · 11/07/2013 20:43

I'm amazed that the programme makers think viewers are likely to need the supermarket clearance aisle explaining to them. I'm a single parent now but I've always checked out the clearance aisle.

Doilooklikeatourist · 11/07/2013 20:43

Watching this a bit delayed , and thinking how lucky we are .
I thought I was broke and am shopping around , but are nowhere near as bad as this , in my cupboard we always have a store of pasta. , rice , flour and tins of tomatoes and chick peas makes such a big difference .

bico · 11/07/2013 20:46

I think de-boning a chicken like that is beyond most people's cooking ability.

qualitytoffee · 11/07/2013 20:46

Remember Hugh whatisname took on Tescos for their 3 for 2 chickens? Fair play to him, but a family with money worries doesn't care, they just want to feed their families, and rightly so x

HeadFairy · 11/07/2013 20:47

ggirl I've got very good at extracting every scrap of meat for sandwiches, as you say risotto, stuffed peppers (with rice and chicken mixture inside), soup, chicken rissoles (mixed with mashed potato, onion, pepper and whatever else is leftover)...

TwllBach · 11/07/2013 20:47

This is quite hard watching, especially as our local tesco has just opened a food bank.

I've just seen Angela hartnett talking about cardamom, cinnamon etc but if you're budget is so slow, you're not going to want to buy it.

Badvoc · 11/07/2013 20:48

We are the same ggirl...there is never any left if we have chicken. They are tiny unless you are willing to spend ££££
We don't have a large freezer either which means I can't batch cook.
Is true what they are saying...it's always the crap that's on offer.

nancy75 · 11/07/2013 20:48

I don't think I've made a chicken last a week ( lucky that I dont have to) but probably 3 meals.

They are talking about offers on fresh foods, but they have to remember the supermarkets already pay farmers crap money, it would be farmers getting poorer, not supermarkets

Chubfuddler · 11/07/2013 20:49

I'm surprised they haven't gone to aldi or lidl. Surely they are the cheapest supermarkets?

bico · 11/07/2013 20:50

This is a great blog about budget cooking. I first read about it in the Telegraph, which seems a bit incongruous.

Badvoc · 11/07/2013 20:50

Not everyone lives near an aldi or lidl I guess.

bico · 11/07/2013 20:51

What if they don't have an aldi or lidl nearby? We don't.

ggirl · 11/07/2013 20:51

roast the wings? that'll be a fine feast then Hmm

expatinscotland · 11/07/2013 20:51

Two working people and a pensioner. Having to live like this.

Badvoc · 11/07/2013 20:51

I know....:(

curlyclaz13 · 11/07/2013 20:52

supermarkets could help by having better deals on veg and meat. it must be so easy to use frozen meals when they are on offer. education is they key isn't it ? to learn to budget and how to use leftovers for other meals. it is sad that in a rich country like this people struggle to feed themselves properly.

expatinscotland · 11/07/2013 20:53

Yes, the ol', 'Aldi and Lidl are cheap.' Bet they are! Ever seen one in a rural area? Thought not.

I LOVE the bowls and cutlery they are using, though.

Wonder where they got them.

nancy75 · 11/07/2013 20:53

Don't lidl just sell random stuff like German sausage & socks? Only been in one once, couldn't understand how I would do a weeks shop in there
