just catching up. The chefs went over budget which just isnt possible IRL!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/07/2013 20:53

I don't think this yummy food they've cooked is helping the cause.

Last month the bbc website had an article that stated that over 40% of people had bought food on cc or borrowed money for food in the last month.

Chubfuddler · 11/07/2013 20:54

Well not everyone lives near a street market but they went to one of those. I'm just surprised, considering how much cheaper they are, that they weren't shown.

MyBoysAreFab · 11/07/2013 20:55

God I know, it makes me horrified and ashamed when I think how much food we waste and throw out. Sad

rednellie · 11/07/2013 20:56

Was just thinking it'd make more of an impact if they'd served all those politicians and supermarket chiefs some really crap ready meals that were on offer.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 11/07/2013 20:56

OYBBK- I agree. They're seeing this lovely, filling meal for £1 each. Not the fact the families are not eating, or living on half a portion a soup.

Chubfuddler · 11/07/2013 20:57

No nancy lidl and aldi sell a full range of products these days.

I'm not really sure this programme helps. So Angela Hartnett can cook a slap up meal for a quid. We I should bloody well hope so.

bico · 11/07/2013 20:57

rednellie I completely agree. These chefs are highly skilled so can invent tasty recipes from basic ingredients. It isn't something everyone can do or have the confidence to try.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/07/2013 20:58

They could have done so much more with this :(

OP posts:
qualitytoffee · 11/07/2013 20:58

I would love for them to focus on those single parents who can produce good food and educate others without celebrity chefs, trying to educate them.
that goes for anyone really xxxx

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 11/07/2013 20:59

I just want to take that man a big, fat roast dinner round.

rednellie · 11/07/2013 20:59

Or give one lot a cup of sweet tea like the mum has. Another group get a boiled egg like the old guy and the last table get some grim tinned sausages. See what they'd think then.

Argh, actually just makes me really angry.

qualitytoffee · 11/07/2013 21:00

I agree OH Happy ever after eh? [hmmm]

Chubfuddler · 11/07/2013 21:00

And now for some benefits bashing. Is this a rather unfortunate scheduling clash?

bico · 11/07/2013 21:00

qualitytoffee have a look at the blog I linked, which is exactly what you are suggesting. She's currently writing a book of low cost recipes.

dingit · 11/07/2013 21:01

Tonight I cooked ( lazy arse) meatballs £1.70 Lloyd grossman sauce £1, spaghetti, 40p. For 3 people. ( DH pointed out his accompanying glass of wine was £1 Blush)

qualitytoffee · 11/07/2013 21:02

will do bico xx

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/07/2013 21:03

It's just going to reinforce the idea that people in poverty aren't putting enough effort in. It's so much more complicated than that.

OP posts:
FairyJen · 11/07/2013 21:05

So basically £1 is plenty then, you just have to be a top chef tho...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/07/2013 21:05

Chub, I think they know what they are doing :(

OP posts:
Leithlurker · 11/07/2013 21:06

What your essentially saying is that your thanking your lucky stars it is not YOU. Thats exactly what this and previous governments have wanted you to think, as it keep you terrified of change and quietly working away. Try thinking that if it was you, others would be sitting on Mn and other internet forums feeling sorry for you, not helping you any, or asking why anyone has to be in food poverty in a civilised country, just feeling sorry for you and glad it's not them.

Time to stop counting blessings and start getting angry, who knows it could be you soon enough, illness, disability, redundancy, all come unexpectedly and with no time for people to plan.

Chubfuddler · 11/07/2013 21:07

Oh for christs sake.

I think being on benefits looks shit and if these net curtain twitchers think it looks easy perhaps they should try it.

Snazzyenjoyingsummer · 11/07/2013 21:07

I hope not. What I got from it was, as has been said here, that extremely skilled chefs had to really work hard and think about how they were going to cook on that budget. If they found it difficult, what hope have others got?
Plus the chefs (esp James Martin) did get to ask some awkward questions at the end. I read 'I don't think the government know how bad things are' as 'I don't think the government care enough'.

Am watching the Nick and Margaret thing now.

twistyfeet · 11/07/2013 21:08

These progs also never show how those on different diets like coeliacs manage. Cheap stuff like pasta is out, as are baked beans.
