Am SO annoyed with Game Of Thrones!

I watched the most recent episode last night so if you haven't then THERE WILL BE SPOILERS!!!

The ending pissed me off no end! I started with OMG, then when to WTF and ended up with "fuckin hell" on repeat! Hmm Angry

I now have no real idea what is going on, who I'm meant to invest in or generally where it is going now. I get SO fed up of getting attached to characters in it and thn they suddenly get hacked to bits!

I'm not really sure I want to bother watching it any more - it seems to flit from one thing to another - dyre wolves, dragons, spirit walking in animals, blah blah blah. I will be mega pissed off if I watch all the series and in the end everybody dies!

Am I alone in being pissed off? Confused

:)

I'm sure the lord of Castamere, Robb and anyone else who got in his way would also disagree with you...

RussiansOnTheSpree · 07/06/2013 10:49

Lissieloo You disagree that Tywin is dead? Ok...Grin

Tywin was lucky, rich and ruthless. Had he had Tyrion's brains, he would be ruling the 7 kingdoms. But he didn't. So he never did.

I don't mind you disagreeing with me, but the fact that you disagree doesn't actually negate my right to put my own arguments. :)

lissieloo · 07/06/2013 10:59

Ofgs, stop being so pedantic, you know full well. And it goes both ways. You can't tell us that we are wrong because we disagree with you, unless you are GRRM, you can't know everything.

Trills · 07/06/2013 11:10

Sorry yes, Aunt Genna - I was trying to remember without looking it up and remembered the right sort of sound and remembered that there was a Joanna - I will check names of minor characters properly next time!

Trills · 07/06/2013 11:11

There are theories that say that even GRRM doesn't know everything - that once a story is written the author's interpretation of what is written is no more valuable than anyone else's.

NadiaWadia · 08/06/2013 03:47

Hey, no spoilers from the books, please people! I haven't got round to reading them yet.

I had sort of gathered something awful was going to happen in the latest episode. Although I imagined it would be the Tyrells, from antagonism showed towards them by Cersei last week.

So I wasn't too shocked, although it was worse than I thought. But thinking about it, it was very depressing. Characters are relentlessly brutal to each other, and as someone else said there is no use getting attached to any one, as they will likely be hacked to pieces in a future episode!

George R R Martin has a very morbid imagination. Westeros is just medieval Europe mashed up and recycled. Surely there is enough killing and misery in real history without inventing even more. He seems to revel in unpleasant details. There is also nothing at all original in this world he has invented. Maybe I will give the next series a miss (even though I love Tyrion and Daenerys).

Thingymajigs · 08/06/2013 04:47

I had been struggling with the scenes of torture involving Theon for a couple of weeks, but the stabbing of an unborn baby (particularly as I'm pregnant), just seemed a bit much. Now I know it wasn't even in the book, it was added as extra shock material, just incase we needed it.
I love GOT though so I look past the gratuitous, shocking elements because the characters are so well written and the political side is fascinating to watch.

NadiaWadia · 08/06/2013 05:32

Yes but don't you find the constant stabbing, mutilating, torturing, raping, etc, etc, just grinds you down? It seems to be gloated over, and I can't help worrying about Mr Martin's psyche, or maybe those of the directors/producers.

Thingymajigs · 08/06/2013 07:14

Yes. After last weeks episode and the earlier torture scenes I needed time to recover; it felt like an ordeal to watch. Those scenes are, at its best, a harsh reminder of the cruelty of humans and the brutality of war. But quite often it plays for the shock value which only detracts from the story and makes me question the motives of the producers and writers.
It is playing to a very wide audience and would probably lose viewers if those scenes weren't included. As much as we enjoy the politics and the clever witt of Tyrion there are a substantial amount of viewers who enjoy the brutal and gratutious elements much more.
I just try to ignore the weaker parts (including the constantly distracting "hey, is that thingy out of thingy?" which is unavoidable in GoT) and focus on the better sides of the show.
But if they kill off Tyrion I'll know they've gone way too far.

ZenGardener · 08/06/2013 07:44

Game of Thrones reminds me of Survivor. It's not necessarily the cleverest person who will win, or the kindest, or the most charismatic. There's a fine line to be walked and a lot of luck involved too. That's what makes the Game of Thrones so interesting.

Tyrion is smart but book-smart. I think he would have made a terrible king (as he made a terrible Hand). I think Tywin was smart but too ruthless and his enmity towards Tyrion will be his undoing.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Dany's story line. It feels a bit like filler, as if waiting for the real action to start happening. I find it more interesting on TV though. Perhaps I just get overly confused with all the difficult names.

I hated reading the boys with Theon's torture. I will be glad when Bolton Jr gets his comuppance. We know it is going to be good when it happens!

Trills · 08/06/2013 11:17

The inspiration for the red Wedding

I think that stabbing Talisa in the stomach made perfect sense. Bringing her there was like throwing it in Walder Frey's face. I broke our agreement but you're going to do what I want anyway. Her pregnancy was the visible and visceral representation of the broken promise.

Trills · 08/06/2013 11:18

By the way, saying "I will be happy when X gets his comeuppance" is a spoiler. In general there's no promise that anyone will get what they deserve in this series!

limitedperiodonly · 08/06/2013 11:32

I thought the baby stabbing was really effective because it said to me 'we're going to annihilate your entire family.'

I didn't like Robb because like someone else said, he made the most stupid decisions.

I like it that Martin's prepared to kill characters off - but please not Tyrion.

The only regret I've got is that I'm rubbish with names and faces and they killed off two of the few people I recognise.

I had no idea who Bolton was and didn't remember ever seeing him before Blush. I was dimly aware of who Frey was but only because when I saw him again I thought: 'Oh yeah, it's that newsagent from Broadchurch.'

limitedperiodonly · 08/06/2013 11:38

I recognised Talisa too but didn't know her name. I just knew her as Robb's wife. Oh well.

Trills · 08/06/2013 11:39

"Robb's wife the battlefield nurse" is plenty - she didn't do much else.

limitedperiodonly · 08/06/2013 11:45

I could look up the characters but I'm afraid of spoilers so I just watch it and put up with wondering who people are.

This is a really good thread - no spoilers despite people having read the books. Wonderful.

ZenGardener · 08/06/2013 11:56

I think GRRM definitely has his favorite characters like Tyrion who you know will have a happy ending. The really unpleasant characters also tend to get their comeuppance or some kind of punishment.

I know he has had some shockers like Nedd and Robb but they were really characters who had no where to grow. So I do think that Bolton Jr and probably senior too will get some kind of punishment in the future.

I really want to know where Benjen is??

Trills · 08/06/2013 11:59

The internet in general has been very good about spoilers keeping pace with the series. Especially in season 1 with Sean Bean.

limitedperiodonly · 08/06/2013 13:48

I usually avoid GOT threads because though I love the show and having people point out things I've missed and non-spoilery background, there is a poster who delights in spoilers as if you deserve it for just watching it on the telly instead of doing it properly.

Obviously, if the thread is about the books, then I know better than to go on there. But not threads about the show.

limitedperiodonly · 08/06/2013 15:58

Oh there are spoilers. I just missed them first time round Sad

If you want to talk about the books, go on a bleeding thread about the books.

That doesn't go for smart people who talk around things but don't say what's going to happen.
