The glory that is Frasier

DS2 has recently discovered Frasier which means we have been watching an awful lot of it. I'd forgotten how unbelievably funny and clever it is - it never assumes that the audience is stupid, the acting is consistently brilliant (ridiculous English Moon brothers aside). I'm getting a bit obsessed with the celebs who voice the radio call-ins - list here.

Any other fans?

That's a great episode iseenodust - I love Nile's facts and the butt warmer :o

NicknameTaken · 07/02/2013 10:37

Agree - utterly brilliant casting. I love Niles and Roz and Martin and of course Frasier himself. I really like the fact that this and the Big Bang Theory respect the intelligence of the viewers - a contrast to the anti-intellectualism of Friends. That sounds a bit poncy, but I'm thinking of Ross getting excited about dinosaurs and everyone pretending to snore. Dinosaurs are interesting!

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 07/02/2013 10:40

I do like it, but Daphne drives me up the wall. Did they have a game when writing the scripts to see how many really obvious Americanisms they could put in her mouth? Things like 'well, as long as you're here, we have a leaky faucet that sure could use fixing' and references to 'going on vacation', 'the tub' and 'the ocean' etc. And all her brothers seem to be cockney!

Much better before she and Niles were an item. The story line where she gets terribly fat because she's content (to cover Jane Leeves's pregnancy I think?) - bleurgh!

Salbertina · 07/02/2013 10:42

Agree, Daphne the v v weakest link in possibly the wittiest programme ever made!

Wallison · 07/02/2013 10:50

It's a brilliant programme. One of my favourite bits is when Martin is talking about Eddie and saying how he seems to understand everything he is saying. Then it cuts to Eddie's viewpoint and we hear him hearing Martin saying "Yadda yadda yadda Eddie yadda yadda yadda yadda Eddie". It makes me giggle even thinking about it now.

NuzzleMyScratch · 07/02/2013 10:53

The best bit in that episode Wallison is when Martin listens to Frasier and Niles and hears yadda yadda DAD yadda yadda :o

Bunbaker · 07/02/2013 10:56

I loved Frasier. Niles was my favourite character. I loved Cheers as well and visited the outside of Cheers bar when in Boston many years ago. I even bought the sweatshirt - I kid you not.

Floralnomad · 07/02/2013 10:56

Watching the radio play one on Comedy Central at the moment . Absolute classic especially the bit when the dyslexic woman says ' look out he's got a nug' . Seen it so many times I'm now laughing in anticipation of the jokes!

Oh, The Ski Lodge. Frasier isn't my favourite comedy, but Niles is one of the greatest characters out there. And The Ski Lodge is absolutely hilarious. DP and I can't say "really?" without doing an impression of the French instructer when he thinks Niles is telling him he's gay.

Or Frasier's greatest ever line: "How can men use sex to get what we want? Sex IS what we want!"

Hello fellow fans! The highlights of my week are Thursday and Friday mornings, when I watch a couple of episodes after dropping DS at nursery. The re-runs on C4 at the moment are in a particularly rich period, with lots of references to the frostiness of Maris, and Niles's lust for Daphne. And no Moon brothers, of course. Half cockney, half Scottish, wholly irritating.

clam · 07/02/2013 13:11

Dh and I have taken to calling ds Niles recently, as he's becoming a bit precious about clean hands and sell-by dates. So we're now watching re-runs again with ds, so he knows just how much we're taking the mick.

Italiangreyhound · 07/02/2013 23:30

Hassled I am so glad to find your thread.

Still watcing Frasier after years.

Love....

The dead seal
The French translation
Niles when he cuts his finger doing the ironing
The Cranes opening a restaurant

TOP comedy moment was the two Cranes both thinking they were hankering after the same woman but really Fraser wanted Regan and Niles wanted Poppy!

But best of all Niles and Daphne dancing together - we fooled them all!

diddl · 08/02/2013 07:53

Oh yes, it´s great!

I love Niles and Roz!

Italiangreyhound · 08/02/2013 08:03

Oh yes and when Daphne gets back from the fat farm and Frazer gives her a piggy fridge thing that makes a noise every time she opens the door. Then she crushes it and says something like "That little pig can dish it out but he sure can't take it."

I thought Daphne was great and I loved the Niles and Daphne will they wont they story line. But agree her brothers (especially the non-favourite one) were terrible.

Lighthousekeeping · 08/02/2013 09:47

I love Nile's whippet which is just Maris with four legs Smile

They seemed like a great team Daphne and Roz live next door to each other in rl.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 08/02/2013 19:28

Lumbering onto this thread late but yy, loved Frasier! adored the speed and cleverness of the gags, Roz was amazing, brilliant timing between Frasier and Niles. Was always glad to see episodes featuring Lilith. Some of the radio colleagues were hilarious, especially Gil with the 'mot juste'. Daphne was at her best earlier, the actress was very good but I thought as time went on the character flagged. Tbh once she and Niles were an item they could have diminished her role.

Do you think they had lots of Eddies or just one?

NuzzleMyScratch · 08/02/2013 19:49

I think there was the original Eddie (Moose) and then his son.

DeDevilTail · 08/02/2013 19:51

There was just one Eddie

NuzzleMyScratch · 08/02/2013 19:58

That link says at the bottom that Enzo took over from Moose when he retired....

DeDevilTail · 08/02/2013 20:00

So it does...I didn't read all the way to the bottom. Just remembered seeing something about Moose after he died which never mentioned that he's been replaced.

Hassled · 08/02/2013 21:19

So glad to see this thread still going :).

Someone mentioned how nice it is that the cast are so close - I think I read that Martin and Niles are godfathers to Daphne's children, which is lovely. And for some reason I was thinking about David Angell, who was the creator/producer who died in 911 (he was in one of the planes) - he is why they called Niles and Daphne's baby David.

I could be very wrong but I imagine Kelsey to be more detached from them. I don't know why I think that. Maybe it's because he rehearsed on his own and just filmed on the day.

I watch episodes now that I don't recall seeing the first time. Always a bonus Smile

Salbertina · 09/02/2013 08:53

Yes, it is a bonus. Think my memory must be going as rarely remember any anecdotes from the prog

Lighthousekeeping · 09/02/2013 09:14

I know and, I dont understand how people can remember the titles of each episode!! my memory is shot to pieces.
