The glory that is Frasier

DS2 has recently discovered Frasier which means we have been watching an awful lot of it. I'd forgotten how unbelievably funny and clever it is - it never assumes that the audience is stupid, the acting is consistently brilliant (ridiculous English Moon brothers aside). I'm getting a bit obsessed with the celebs who voice the radio call-ins - list here.

I'm lying in bed watching Frasier right now, recently started the whole box set from the beginning again. Currently watching Season 2 The Innkeepers.

You know what's lovely? What's lovely is when you suddenly spot a thread in active conversations which you started nearly 3 years ago :o. In the intervening period DS3 has discovered Frasier, so we're now watching a lot of it again, and still I'm not bored. Good to see so many fellow fans.

Ahhh i'm on maternity leave for the second time in 2 years. First time around dd and i had a routine of the Frasier double bill then homes under the hammer in the morning,hoping to get it going again!

I did buy the first 4 seasons on dvd and they were so good I hesitated about the 5th and 6th series
I am so glad I went for the 6th series instead of the 5th (Roz's pregnancy) as it had this glorious 'better than Mr Bean' 5 minutes of sheer hilarious comedy

Love it too. My older kids also like it. Our favourites include the "halloween" type episode where Frasier and Bulldog try to out frighten each other. Also the one where Frasier has a client who hates clowns or and the one where he gets stuck on the bed onstage with the children's performer.

My son gets annoyed though when Frasier complains he never has any dates when every episode he seems to have a different date!

Amazing to think Kelsey Grammer was really struggling with drug and drink addiction for most of the run. Great ensemble acting.

The slapstick is amazing. Any episode where they throw a dinner party and things descend into farce is pure gold.

I blame this thread for tempting me to buy the first 4 series of Frasier on Amazon marketplace (used DVDs) as I was reminded how good it was.

I LOVE Frasier. Have been off work for th holidays and the 9am Frasier is such a good start to the day. I didn't know they were on Amazon prime,maybe I'll watch it in the evenings when I go back to work.

The writing is just clever. I remember studying 17th century comedy techniques at uni and often see the same techniques used in Frasier. It just doesn't seem to date to me either which is unusual. I don't know if I've seen them all so live in hope of a new episode!

Despite all the funny word play and intelligent stuff, my favourite moment is purely a slapstick one: at the fancy dress party where Niles is dressed as Cyrano de Bergerac and is horrified when he somehow thinks Frasier has got Daphne pregnant and is aghast at his apparently callous attitude. He's listening at a door when Frasier bursts out and knocks his plasticine nose sideways :o

But that whole episode is full of such classic farce - I love it.

We have two quotes we say often - one is from when they go to the Cheers reunion - Niles looks at the bottle to see what vintage the wine is and says in horror "it just says WINE!" and the other is when he's feeling down, and Fraisier offers him a drink: "wine, Niles?" To which he says "well, wouldn't you?"

Also: "well my muffin's stuck!"

Frasier is awesome. I had a trial of Amazon Prime recently and they had all the eps on their video streaming service, so I indulged in some serious binge watching. I love the obscure opera and literary references which had me scrambling to Wikipedia. And I might just have to book a flight to Seattle one of these days.

Sitting here stunned! Celeb phone-ins? I didn't know this even after watching every single episode (at least twice).

Frasier got me through a lot, hangovers/duvet days/ maternity leave/babies feeds/numerous colds and flu.

I love this show. It's perfect, without a single duff character apart from Daphne's brother (seriously - are there no Mancunian actors in LA??). I enjoy all the Christmas episodes, and watch them every December, especially the Jewish lady one.

The episode where Niles has heart surgery and there are flashbacks, is very moving.

Love Frasier, especially the earlier episodes. When I catch one on cable I always think the more hair he has, the funnier it tends to be.

Favourite line is Frasier to Niles when Niles is smugging about all the free concert tickets etc he's getting because of his newspaper pieces.

N: 'And all because I have a small column'
F: 'That would certainly be the Freudian interpretation'

I watched a classic with Bebe at her worst today, and then found YouTube compilations of Bebe being brilliant - another fairly minor character who was just perfectly done.

Frasier is just wonderful. I think I love him because although he is arrogant and snobbish, there's a kind man in that character somewhere. It's a gentle humour. And sooo witty.

My favourite episode, has anyone mentioned it so far? is when Frasier is 'helping' at Niles's proposal to Daphne. The turtle doves and the madrigal-singing dwarfs being marshalled on and off as the proposal is on, then off, then on again.

I've been working my way through it for months now, a mat leave bonus (thanks C4)! I'd forgotten there were so many episodes, only 84 (saved) to go I think.

Niles was always my favourite, just adorable. I love Lilith too. In fact I always thought Frasier himself was intended to be an unsympathetic character, being so pompous and vain, an anti-hero, providing a central focus for the likeable characters. Apparently not everyone sees it that way.

After many years I grasped that we might feel sympathy for Frasier's lack of self-awareness, vulnerability and constantly being misunderstood (because he's so pompous and vain...) but I still can't feel charmed by him.

Love the show though (except when it descends into real slapstick) and am still a bit shocked that the 1990s were 'a long time ago' though can see from the programme that, in some ways, they were.
