Should be interesting. I will be voting for Wiggo because I like his dry sense of humour, he won the Tour de France, which is a major, huge feat (especially for a Brit) and his gentlemanly conduct on the 'Tack-gate' stage, the French love him, then he goes and takes gold at the olympics and he has encouraged many youngsters to get on their bikes. DH and I think there should be a male and female category though.

Brilliant show. Clare balding brilliant. Sue and Gary - pfft

Omg idris Elba. Wow wow wow.

Sorry to digress. Sen coe got too much bloody fanfare. More than the winner. Spoilt the show for me that he got more airtime than our fab sportsmen and women. Really wanted a girl to win this year. But happy with the top three. V surprised to see Kate there. Surely princess Anne would've been better.

Right off to re-watch idris.

Bakingnovice · 16/12/2012 23:01

Not sen, seb. Seb.

millie19 · 16/12/2012 23:03

Well done Wiggo but his wife looked like a miserable tranny Grin but managed to crack a smile when he won. And poor Kate looked v grim trying to hold it together poor thing. Hope she did faint so Becks could carry her off!

LeeCoakley · 16/12/2012 23:10

Why isn't it Sports Person of the Year? Sports Personality of the Year is Clare Balding. No question.

squoosh · 16/12/2012 23:11

Wiggin's wife's eyelashes were, umm, a tad too spidery.

ivykaty44 · 16/12/2012 23:15

I think it is great that you can look however you wish and still be a sports person. The public might not like how you look but it will not stop you taking part in sport and winning, wiggins wife was a cyclist so also a sports person in her own right, so what what they look like they are not pop stars or wannabe pop stars or models and good for them to have there own image.

Ponders · 16/12/2012 23:17

yes, I thought Clare should have got some kind of award this year Grin

shame Mo got nowt though

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 16/12/2012 23:18

It was a foregone conclusion. wasn't it?
As I said above, I missed the end but would have loved to see Jessica or any woman win.
As for Seb Coe, it was the former Labour Government that won the games. Don't get me wrong, he did a good job, it just pisses me off that the current Government including Boris, takes all the credit for the Olympics.

wintera · 16/12/2012 23:40

I thought it was a bit out of order that Jessica Ennis never got to make a speech to be honest.

Cozy9 · 17/12/2012 00:01

ibizagirl · 17/12/2012 06:11

I voted for Mo as the winner then picked Chris Hoy second and David Weir third. Can't believe Mo wasn't in top 3!! I know they were all brilliant at the Olympics but Mo brought something "extra special".

LittleAbruzzenBearLovesYuleLog · 17/12/2012 07:27

Typical Daily Fail readers are slagging off. Everyone on that list was fabulous, but what Wiggo did just in one year, not just the Olympics and other events, but to be the first Brit since 1903 to win one of the biggest sporting events in history (the Tour) is momentous. It had to be him. He has a very dry sense of humour and although his style isn't to my personal taste, it isn't a fashion award. I couldn't care less if he was in a bin bag. He is a sporting legend.

He is a sporting legend

I disagree. He had a brilliant year, yes, but that doesn't make him a legend. He will only be a legend if he sustains that IMO.

LittleAbruzzenBearLovesYuleLog · 17/12/2012 07:46

But IMO he is a legend, the first British person to win the Tour in 100 years...how can they not be. It was a historical event.

*how can he not be.

.... and then win Olympic Gold two weeks later.

With the TDF he was the first Briton ever to win, in a race/sport dominated by "mainland" Europeans.

Sad The Olympians get one maybe two chances in a life time, cyclists and tennis players get one or 4 per year.

MordionAgenos · 17/12/2012 09:09

@soupy he will be a legend because he was the first British man to win the Tour in the modern era. He was also the first track cyclist to convert. People always remember the first. Despite what Lineker claimed during SPOTY Mo wasn't the first person to do the 5K/10K double, Yifter the Shifter did it, so did Lasse Viren, so did Zatopek. And maybe other people also. And ultimately - Olympic golds for track aren't unusual for us. What was unusual was those few Olympics where we didn't win gold. Wiggins win was unprecedented.

MordionAgenos · 17/12/2012 09:17

@startail Some Olympians get 4 or 5 Olympics. Some Olympians get the chance to win multiple medals at individual Olympics (cyclists are obviously one example, swimmers, runners, some paralympian racers). Most of them also have other international competitions - worlds, Europeans etc - in Athletics there is a major championship every year. Same with swimming.

As it happens, I do think Ben Ainslie and Ellie Simmons should have been in the top 3 but in place of Jess EEnnis and Andy Murray, not in place of Wiggo.

MaryChristmaZEverybody · 17/12/2012 09:19

The reason I don't think he should have won is that cycling (especially road racing) is actually a team sport, not an individual. And so his achievements this year were actually team achievements.

Obviously if (like Steve Redgrave) he managed to win a team sport over a great many years, with different team-mates, then possibly he deserves it.

But to me cycling seems to be fixed, in that they are already deciding which one of their team will be given the support to win the Tour de France next year Confused. It is decided by the manager, not on the road.

And I'm not trying to take away the achievement of winning, just that I don't think he should have won the individual award.

EugenesAxeChoppedDownANiceTree · 17/12/2012 09:21

Thanks for the rankings - I was also surprised not to see Mo in the top three (but then I voted for him). My husband said Ennis had "gone for the male vote" on account of her dress Hmm (I'm sure many women would have voted for her too, I mean).
