The Paradise - Mr Moray is a sexual predator! Miss Audrey is right!

Never been a fan of Miss Audrey but she was giving Denise good advice this week. What is it with Moray and snogging everyone and anyone then looking wistful about his dead wife. Then there is Clara desperate to give him some -'say it with a Geordie accent' "comfort".

Also, how old is Miss Katherine Glendenning? She looks about 35, with a dowry like hers she would have been married off years ago!

They should either call him Mouret, and pronounce it 'moo-ray', or call him Moray, and pronounce it Murray.

Irritating.

BTW did Moray and Catherine have sex or did I imagine that?

Isn't the Paradise based on Zola's novel? Am certain mouret & Denise marry in the novel. Happy to be corrected though I read yonks ago.

Ohhh i'm loving The Paradise. I'm a huge fan of downton but they rished through the years so much last series that now they've had to slow it down or it would be 1996 by now!!

So the paradise was marketed as a bigger budget larkrise (and i lived larkrise) its not gonna end at this series is it? I was hoping it would run like larkrise did. Although its a bit "soaplike" i love denise and mouray's chemistry. I'm constantly squealing "he loves her!" at the tv whilst dh tuts at me.

Did anyone watch it today? It ended so abruptly, was waiting for a big scene with the wedding a la Downton but it was not to be..

Yes I watched it. I was waiting for a more interesting ending too. What happened at the wedding? What was the fallout? What was the mystery re: the wife? What was in the black book? A bit of a disappointing ending, unless another series is being commissioned.

There's another series for the fallout. I rather like Katherine Glendenning... She's so conniving.

Haven't seen todays, but have been enjoying this. Just can't understand why it's tucked away on a Tuesday and not broadcast on a Sunday when I should imagine it would have doubled it's viewing figures. Us period drama lovers don't tend to look out for things on Tuesdays! Smile

Agree about Katherine's age - it's been annoying me throughout. Surely she should be looking a good 10 - 15 years younger ? Confused

Right, having read the rest of this thread...it's only loosely based on the book, isn't it? :o

Still haven't seen it. Have put the DVD on my Christmas wish list instead.

Was that the last one? Oh no! SO it ended with Katherine threatening Denise - so the wedding must be in the next series?

What happened with Jonas? Was working and had one eye on the tv!

SPOILER

He was let go. Looked lingeringly in the river. I thought he was going to jump in but he just threw the mystery book in and walked off. They had better do another series. There was some rubbish on a few years ago called Defying Gravity which evidently I was the only viewer of. They cancelled it mid series and I haven't yet got a sense of closure!

Hell hath no fury ...secondhand.

I do hope there's a second series - really got into it having found it a bit boring to start with. Agree a Sunday night slot would be better (before Homeland though).

I've been loving this, this followed by Cookoo was excellent Tuesday viewing, now they've both finished. I read the book as grew inpatient with the series. It is quite different. Mouret is more sympathetic as he is less of a sexual predator and Miss Glendenning is a concubine much like Violetta in La Traviata which explains her being early middle aged and unmarried. He never gets engaged to her in the book.
Denise is better in the TV adaptation, she was stupid and pious in the book, forever giving money to one brother to spend on married women whilst she and her little brother starved and she refused to put out until married. The double standards v her brother and herself never rang true. Doing away with the brothers and her uncle's miserable family vastly improved the story. There is endless descriptive crap in the book as well, and it's nowhere near as much fun.
I don't know that I can be bothered with series 2 if it's just an evil Glendennings v the Paradise saga. Miss Glendenning turned into too much of a caricature this week, she had some dignity earlier in the series.

i thought this was great. Had to laugh the way everyone called Moray 'Moray' as oppose to his first name even his fiancee - never Mr etc... then we find out his christian name is John - bit of a let down.

he reminded me of Mr Claypole in Rentaghost TBH - showing my age.

Mr Claypole - love it!

His voice at times reminded me of Douglas Reynholm from the IT crowd!
