Miss Marple, Prime Suspect, Hetty Wainthrope, Rosemary and Thyme?

And though not sole female lead, try the adaptations of the Harriet Vane ones of the DL Sayers Lord Peter mysteries.

MadCap · 30/10/2012 22:17

Forbrydelson (sp?) if you can deal with subtitles. The third series starts soon on the BBC. It is brilliant and the lead Sara Lund is excellent. It has been redone by AMC in English, but I don't know if it is as good.

AWomanCalledHorse · 30/10/2012 22:29

Fringe? It's a sci-fi thing & the female lead is really irritating but aside from that it's quite good (and it's got Lance Reddick in it, the Lt. in the Wire).

Veronica Mars not something I liked but so many people I know rant about how great it was.

Damages but if you don't like Glenn Close it won't be your thing.

Deadwood the woman who plays Calamity Jane is fab, plus Timothy Olyphant is fit, got lots of swearing, nakedness & violence.

juliet bravo

Pancakeflipper · 30/10/2012 22:31

Wire in the Blood

TheDeathAndGories · 30/10/2012 22:32

Bones is I would say
Equal anyway

GoOooooooooonatic · 30/10/2012 22:33

Are you watching Hunted? It is vairy good, on BBC1 so you can iplayer it.

TheDeathAndGories · 30/10/2012 22:33

Hmm sorry saw the one more episode thing

MacAndCheese · 30/10/2012 22:33

Castle?

Body of Proof?

FloresCircumdati · 30/10/2012 22:33

Bones
Silent Witness
Girl with the Dragon tattoo series of films (violent, but great story.)
Medium (a bit odd, but great if not taken too seriously)

Old ones:
Cagney & Lacey
Juliet Bravo (yawn)
Silent Witness with Amanda Burton

ProPerformer · 30/10/2012 22:34

I Second Wire In The Blood! I first got it just because Simone Lahbib was in the later series but love every episode!!

Piffpaffpoff · 30/10/2012 22:34

The Bridge

cocolepew · 30/10/2012 22:34

Prime Suspect USA was excellent, I'm gutted it was cancelled.

coppertop · 30/10/2012 22:37

Law & Order: Criminal Intent - a m/f partnership but the female character is the senior detective.

mummmsy · 30/10/2012 22:38

oooohh some great suggestions!

Got another;
Southland it's brilliant (has been cancelled & recommissioned a billion times), Regina King is a fantastic actress & it's gripping/funny/upsetting/one of the best hidden gems on tv.

MrsRigby · 30/10/2012 22:41

The Bridge - Swedish and Danish crime drama with English subtitles.

The best thing the BBC have had on TV in a long time. I really hope they get another series comissioned.

You have to watch it.

Shoshe · 30/10/2012 22:47

Rissoli and Isles

mummmsy · 30/10/2012 22:48

oh, now i don't know what to pick!

BittenInfectedCorpseDodger · 30/10/2012 22:53

The Killing - the original Danish version. Absolutely brilliant.

Second The Bridge.

tribpot · 30/10/2012 22:58

I second Rizzoli and Isles - two kick arse female leads, fantastic. Also Bones of course.

Loved the Bridge, provided you could cope with even more bleak Scando-drama than Wallander. I have to say, life in Southern Sweden really is nothing like these shows at all - thank god! Although the lack of decent chocolate used to be a major problem.

Castle - fantastic female lead and Nathan Fillion is not exactly hard to watch.

Unforgettable - cancelled after one series so may be fairly cheap to rent.

deadhedgehogpatronus · 30/10/2012 23:01

Another rec for Wire in the Blood, especially the Simone Lahbib episodes [hwink] for ProPerformer

Also Prime Suspect, Silent Witness (older ones best but Amanda Burton does do my head in a bit)

Also yes to Criminal Intent L&O, the female character is pretty ballsy.

What about The Closer? I haven't seen much of it myself but a few friends who usually have excellent taste have always highly recommended it, and it's a female lead.

Vera with Brenda Blethyn was good too, although I've only seen the first one.

Pancakeflipper · 30/10/2012 23:04

I enjoyed Vera, slightly eccentric, intellectual female Inspector.

tribpot · 30/10/2012 23:20

I've wanted to watch The Closer from the beginning, but it's surprisingly difficult to find some of the earlier series on DVD or whatever.
