Any big Downton fans out there who can tell me what happened in the very last episode of series 2 and also the Xmas special? Tryin to get ready for the new series on Sunday but is there anything else I missed? (apart from Lady Mary and Matthew getting together that is)

OP posts:

completely daft episode. Not quite as bad as the last series when the paralysed Matthew got up and walked but not far off....

The timings seem all out of sync to me. This series is 10 years on from the first which would, surely, make Lady Mary in her mid 30s?

I'll have you know that the small and humble will inherit the Earth. We're closer to it and we don't need as much food.

PuppyMonkey · 01/10/2012 12:05

My DP is 6ft 4ins. I'm 5ft 4ins.

We are freaks indeed.Grin

"completely daft episode. Not quite as bad as the last series when the paralysed Matthew got up and walked but not far off...."

Walked off to find foood!!

gazzalw · 01/10/2012 12:16

Brother is 6ft 4 ins and doesn't seem over tall to me....but Albert does seem to tower over all the other below stairs staff doesn't he...

Is there a Daisy/Albert love interest story line brewing?

RuleBritannia · 01/10/2012 12:18

People are generally taller now that they were nearly 100 years ago so someone who was 6ft 4ins then would look unusual.

They don't talk about Thomas's homosexuality because it was illegal to be a homosexual then so, if it were talked about, it would have been in hushed voices. It was also something to be ashamed of if you knew someone like that.

As it was a crime, you were supposed to report any suspicions.

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 01/10/2012 12:26

Poor Edith! I thought he was going to die, not jilt her! No way would he have done that in RL. Lord G was a bit of a wimp about it all - I told DH Si would expect him to punch the guy in the face if he embarrassed our DD like that rough as a nail file me :o

ohthedandy · 01/10/2012 12:55

It's all daft but I'm still enjoying it! I can't work out why Cora's mother has disappeared - surely she wouldn't have gone back to America with Edith's wedding on the horizon?

Was Another Time, Another Place with Phyllis Logan the one with the Italian prisoner of war? Ooo, remember the "seduction" scene very well - opened my eyes that did! (And her's too I seem to remember!)

Animation · 01/10/2012 13:16

Yes, very strange that Cora's mum went before the wedding. I like her. She did say she was going though and Lord G gave her a whiskey (with no water). I got the impression she'd found them all a bit Hmm at the cold buffet party.

Moln · 01/10/2012 13:18

Cora's mother said in the lasr episode she was ready to go home, thoug ypu are right Edith had got engaged and planned to be married in a month whist the "other grandmother" was still there so you'd have thought she'd have stayed (then again it was poor edith who just doesn't seem to matter that much to anyonee

why doesn't Mrs Pickles seem to be getting a bump? she was know to be pregnnt at christmas, come over for Mry's wedding and went back and is now back again and still no bump. What time of the year is it supposed to be? Will she be ginormous at the time pickles gets into a pickle he runs away from?

Is there a Downtonopedia?

I need answers for my inane questions!

SuperB0F · 01/10/2012 13:22

I see this is Discussion Of The Day...I read on twitter last night that Downton had not only jumped the shark, but was actually bumming it with no johnny. Crude, but essentially true, I feel.

LadyHarrietdeSpook · 01/10/2012 13:26

Thinking about it, it is so cackhanded that Cora's mum just disappeared this episode. FFS, actually.

ScrambledSmegs · 01/10/2012 13:30

B0F, who on earth do you follow on twitter? I need to follow them too, I think Grin

Downton is bloody ridiculous this series. I know it's essentially a soap in period dress, but honestly, try and at least have a semblance of reality, please!

SoupDragon · 01/10/2012 13:32

Sybil does have a bump. It was particularly apparent when Edith was looking at herself in the mirror in her wedding dress - MrsP has her hands on it and it was quite pronounced. The sytle of her dresses hides it I think.

MarthasHarbour · 01/10/2012 13:35

and and

is anyone getting a bit pee'd off with Ethel running in and out all in a fluster shouting 'i have got something to say - oh but i cant say it - not now' and running away leaving Isobel all in a kerfuffle Hmm she has done it every episode and it is getting rather dull now

MarthasHarbour · 01/10/2012 13:36

BoF you are just filthy, really you are. You need to go to Isobel's school of fallen women Hmm

Vagaceratops · 01/10/2012 13:48

Yes, what is going on with Ethel? id she give the baby up in the end?

Vagaceratops · 01/10/2012 13:49

I felt really sorry for Isabel when all the prostitutes were laughing at her :(.

MamaMary · 01/10/2012 13:53

Agree that no way would Strallon not have gone through with the wedding; and that Matthew's magic letter is utterly daft!

Trashy but I'm still enjoying it, and I did cry when Edith ran up to her room and told her sisters to leave. :(

ppeatfruit · 01/10/2012 14:02

Anyone agree that Mathew is getting lusher as he ages? in his tux YUM!!. I love it like you mamamary (oh i just worked out yr name) Blush Grin don't care if it's trashy it's still fab. Grin

Lua · 01/10/2012 14:06

What did you all think of the meeting of Anna with dead Mr. Bates' wife friend (cousin?)

She said something like "she was scrubbing her nails like she didn't care the skin would come off". Tought was a strange thing to say... but now I am suspicious she has baked the pie with the poison (hence cleaning her hands) for Mr. Bates, and somehow ended up eating?

Lua · 01/10/2012 14:08

oops, sorry!

Thread too long!

Just notice someone else suggested the same, a few pages back...Blush

hellymelly · 01/10/2012 14:10

ohthedandy- yes, that's the one, with the Italian prisoners of war. She was very good in it.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 01/10/2012 14:13

I actually thought Cora was a cold fish when she was trying to comfort Edith. FFS, just give the girl a proper cuddle!

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 01/10/2012 14:17

Yes, Lua, I think she must have been planning to poison Mr Bates.

But then what? Did she change her mind and kill herself? The way her friend described her, she could have been suicidal.

The halo-poison-glow thing is VERY interesting though.

I don't understand why Anna didn't make more of the fact she was seen making her own pie.
