Any big Downton fans out there who can tell me what happened in the very last episode of series 2 and also the Xmas special? Tryin to get ready for the new series on Sunday but is there anything else I missed? (apart from Lady Mary and Matthew getting together that is)

OP posts:
HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 01/10/2012 00:26

God I love it when Downton gets daft.

spookytoo · 01/10/2012 01:17

I am in the states and downloaded expatshield for free and can watch Downton.

CheerfulYank · 01/10/2012 03:39

Yes Spooky but I ruined a laptop or two watching Downton on some rather dodgy sites and now DH has Put His Foot Down. :(

spookytoo · 01/10/2012 03:42

All ok so far fingers crossed!

Moln · 01/10/2012 03:48

I am very annoyed about the Edith thing. i mean it is daft they didn't want her to marry him, he's well off, kind etc. also agree it would be unlikely to happen, they were all about face and he wouldn't want to embarass himself or Edith. Lord Fatty Bumbum is the cause of it I tell you.

Exactly why is someone attempting to set up Bates? What has he done in prison that has caused this?

What is Pickles running from? Why was he wearing a black bow tie when everyonr else had a white one? Why was he even wearing a bow tie, what happen to his principles on that one?

Has Matthew got a little porkier? May be his weight is inversly proportional to Marys.

diddl · 01/10/2012 06:53

I do think it´s a bit daft that Mary gets everything & Edith nothing.

I´m hoping it reverses & Edith somehow ends up with everything & the bores M&M with nothing.

So marry beds a Turk who dies, Sybil marries the chauffeur-who is allowed to stay??!!-but Strallan for Edith is the absolute limit!

Eveb though she loves him, wouldhave a good lifestyle with him & they are potentially broke!!

SoupDragon · 01/10/2012 07:07

I thought Mrs Hughes dipped her head out of love for Carson... she, and Mrs Pattmore just looked too happy to have been pretending...

In the Next Time slot last week, didn't she say "so it is cancer then?" Did I miss that bit this week? Anyway - the Next Time bits are rarely what they seem (eg the whole Downton Place snippet where they are actually just looking at it)

herethereeverywhere · 01/10/2012 07:57

Ok just watched it and fgs it gets more ridiculous every week!

I reckon Hughes does have cancer and also that O'Brien will figure out Thomas' "secret" when the new footman arrives and will blackmail him or something.

Poor Edith :(

Also the bit next week with Pickle running and being told off. I reckon Fellowes has written it so it turns out that Pickle becomes a coward or something so Lord G can become smug about how he was right all along.

Really dislike Mathew, wasn't he supposed to be against all the pomp of their way of life at the start? Now he cries over burnt jackets and can't get off his arse when someone wants to talk to him!

diddl · 01/10/2012 08:03

Why don´t M&M piss off downsize to Downton PLace?

FlamingoBingo · 01/10/2012 08:20

I cried a little for poor Edith this week. Strallen is a pathetic wimp. Can't believe he managed to fight in a war and didn't spend the whole time cowering in a corner with that stupid sideways look on his face.

Thomas was gay right back in series 1. Doesn't anyone remember him snogging the visiting aristo he was valeting for?

SoupDragon · 01/10/2012 08:27

Yes. Apparently he'll fall for the new footman shortly.

SoupDragon · 01/10/2012 08:27

Not Very Tall Albert, another new one.

Animation · 01/10/2012 09:09

I don't think there could be any way back for Strallen now - it doesn't say a lot for his integrity letting her down in public like that in such a whiny wimpy way. And no words of comfort or encouragement to her - just whining and wimping. If he'd anything about him he would have talked to her in a private room!

So surely it's not going to be the great love story where they end up together. Hmm

herethereeverywhere · 01/10/2012 09:09

I didn't think anyone else knew he was gay though ? So my theory is that he will be discovered this series and that might be what O'Brien plans to ruin him with. I could be wrong though and there will be another ridiculous plot point to cause an upset! Grin

MorrisZapp · 01/10/2012 09:12

O'Brien knows full well he's gay. In the first series she did all but buy him a feather boa and chum him to G.A.Y.

Animation · 01/10/2012 09:22

Also thought Cora said a good thing to Edith - that she was being tested. Being a lovely mum - and lovely Mrs Hughes!

As for Tom - he's really in for it now with O'Brien!!

Corygal · 01/10/2012 09:26

The jilt was ridiculous.

The upper classes just didn't do that sort of thing - for a start, Strallan would have been social toast afterwards, which he couldn't have entertained as a possibility, and, most importantly, marriage just wasn't that big a deal to them in that way. As a gentleman, he wouldn't have bailed.

MarthasHarbour · 01/10/2012 09:29

If the poor dont want the leftover food send it my way Grin Grin

YY i can downsize my home to Downton Place too, we are looking for a house at the mo, somewhere with a nice garden aspect - t'will be perfect Wink

MarthasHarbour · 01/10/2012 09:31

animation i too thought Cora was fabulous in this episode, with Edith and Mrs Hughes about-time too

Just what IS going on with OBrien and Thomas - they were thick as thieves in the first two series'

diddl · 01/10/2012 09:36

"I didn't think anyone else knew he was gay though ?"

Mrs Patmore said something to Daisy about her wasting her time trying to get him to like her-that he didn´t like women.

Moln · 01/10/2012 09:50

SoupDragon the Next episode slot last week had Carson saying "So it is cancer then." it was editedin such a way it looked like a statment and not as we saw this week him askig Mrs Pattmore "So it is Cancer then?" beacause he'd suspected that for speaking to the dr and overhearing stuff. Mrs patterson then replied "we don'know yet" or something along those lines.

So when we thoght they'd given away the plot lst week for this week they were actually misleading us. The soundrels!

That's hilarious Morris! :-o

LadyHarrietdeSpook · 01/10/2012 10:00

I think it's incredibly lame at the altar Strallan turns to Lord Fatty Bum Bum and goes: I am too old for her, you've said so yourself!

No mate your decision, all your decision.

You're like what: fifty odd and trying to pin it on someone else?

Why does he care so much? (Unless maybe he secretly wasn't that bothered about getting married again...)

I also agree though they wouldn't have given a monkey's who she married as long as he fit 'the criteria' - and Stallan did. You could have substituted one for another back then, love didn't really come into it. And they would have had plenty of help to deal with his health issues.

Chubfuddler · 01/10/2012 10:03

Just think, they could manage Downton Place with only eight servants - think of the economy!

SoupDragon · 01/10/2012 10:07

SoupDragon the Next episode slot last week had Carson saying "So it is cancer then."

Ah... I had remembered it as being Mrs H.

WRT them not caring who Edith married, I think they are slightly different to other titled families because of Cora being American - they are not 100% Stuffy Brit. They don't want their daughter saddled with nursing an old man. OTOH, having accepted Sybil and Pickles, they should have been able to accept Edith and Strallen given it was what she wanted.
