Any big Downton fans out there who can tell me what happened in the very last episode of series 2 and also the Xmas special? Tryin to get ready for the new series on Sunday but is there anything else I missed? (apart from Lady Mary and Matthew getting together that is)

OP posts:
Bossybritches22 · 23/09/2012 21:59

Yes she'll make a lovely Lady Strallen!

MadamGazelleIsMyMum · 23/09/2012 22:00

Does Mrs Hughes have a thing for Mr Carson?

newplan · 23/09/2012 22:03

Of course. Think Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins.

Chubfuddler · 23/09/2012 22:05

Mrs Hughes and Carson are the beating heart of this whole series.

Bates is going to get deaded in his cell isn't he?

Note he didn't deny to his cell mate that he is a murderer. He so killed her.

MrsMiniversCharlady · 23/09/2012 22:06

Why on earth do they insist on giving the entire plot away from the next week's episodes?! It's hardly worth watching each episode, you could just watch the 'next time' clip at the end!!

Chubfuddler · 23/09/2012 22:07

That was annoying. Mind you the series trailer gave the whole thing away.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 23/09/2012 22:09

Angry that they already told us it was cancer - I wanted to find out myself, thanks!

So, who thinks
a) Bates really is a murderer and Anna is going to slowly realise and have her heart broken? Sad

b) Matthew is not going to keep the money and save Downton (but something else is going to happen to save it) and he and Mary are going to have a huge fight/split up/other dramatic happening?

BurlingtonBertieFromBow · 23/09/2012 22:11

Even if Bates is a murderer, Vera was evil so it doesn't tarnish him for me

Edith and Strallan are as drippy as each other, but I suppose it's quite sweet really.

My favourite quote of the episode: 'Sorry, I thought you were a waiter'

Chubfuddler · 23/09/2012 22:12

They won't split up. I think Mary will surprise herself and find she loves Matthew even more than Downton ( she actually realised that at the end of series 1)

Northernlurkerisbackatwork · 23/09/2012 22:16

I loved the fact that the oven breaking caused more consternation than the entire War!

Edith's wedding looks sweet. I hope Sir Anthony proves everybody wrong by fathering about 15 fine healthy sons and living to be 106.

dementedma · 23/09/2012 22:17

Matthew will save Downton, he's spineless so will give in to Mary.
This series needs a dark character, other than bitching footmen. Liked the little sinister bit with bates, added a touch of spice

outtolunchagain · 23/09/2012 22:44

Matthew will buy Downton so that they own it themselves thus freeing it from the old Crawley dynasty and allowing him to Timothy how he wants.
Poor housekeeper lady ( can't remember name) imagine having to wait 2 months Sad

outtolunchagain · 23/09/2012 22:45

Blasted iPhone meant to say "to run it " not TimothyBlush

Rotter · 23/09/2012 22:48

I like the idea of Matthew timothying.

EugenesAxe · 23/09/2012 22:56

I totally agree BurlingtonBertie - a Maggie classic!

And dementedma about Bates. I'm actually a bit queasy with worry thinking about that, although DH said it'll just be to keep up a murderer front with the nasty piece of work cell mate.

Anyone watched 'North & South' with Bates in it? And more importantly Guy of Gisbourne/ Spooks bloke (completely forgotten his name). Slightly annoying but still very enjoyable period drama...

What about Carson's obsession with Mary? Something Not Quite Right or am I just a suspicious wotsit?

Bossybritches22 · 23/09/2012 23:29

BBFB- a suspicious wotsit Grin

Mr Carson has always had a soft spot for Lady Mary, she's his favourite of the daughters, a sort of below stairs uncle!

Anyone else catch Bates cellmate passing things to/from the prison officer? Is he being paid to watch him or just the resident nark ?

Moln · 23/09/2012 23:37

drugs? Dunno really.

Might have to turn off before the next week summary nexr week. It's silly really, don't think it's needed even if it didn't give stuff away.

Wonder what the ex-maid wh had the baby has that she wants to say?

Don't think Bates is a mirderer i say it was to keep cell mate on his toes. They will NOT break Anna's heart.

ProudNeathGirl · 23/09/2012 23:37

Did Bates just admit he murdered his wife at the end of that episode?????

BurlingtonBertieFromBow · 23/09/2012 23:39

Nah I don't think he actually did it (although she sort of had it coming). He just said it to keep up his street cred while 'inside'

I am yet to be convinced re Carson

Born2bemild · 23/09/2012 23:51

Only just found thread, but you lot are making me laugh. I keep wanting to call Strallen, "Surallen" and have him shout " you're fired". Like the way the plot is rocketing along and not dragging things out. Btw, if you haven't watched " North and South" you should. 'Tis on Netflix.

confuddledDOTcom · 24/09/2012 00:25

I've just seen this thread too, marking my place in case I get chance to catch up!

squoosh · 24/09/2012 02:31

Have missed this evening's episode!

Hopefully Bates has been proven to have been a wife killer

And hopefully Matthew is dead...... (a girl can dream)

Thye need a dashing above stairs character, they're all so bloody vanilla.
