Any big Downton fans out there who can tell me what happened in the very last episode of series 2 and also the Xmas special? Tryin to get ready for the new series on Sunday but is there anything else I missed? (apart from Lady Mary and Matthew getting together that is)

OP posts:

I think that this is what she heard that led to her writing to the ambassador(?) with the truth about Pamuk.

"Robert: "Poor old Edith. We never seem to talk about her."
Cora: "I'm afraid Edith will be the one taking care of us in our old age."
Robert: "What a ghastly prospect!" "

I have a mammoth amount of filing to do at the weekend, might put the DVDs of Downton on in the background and see if I spot Soup's woman, so to say.

diddl - yes, I thought so too about that exchange. Mary was quite venomous towards Edith and hearing her parents talk like that must have been so hurtful.

diddl · 21/09/2012 10:54

Perhaps Edith also thought that if she was going to be an old maid it didn´t matter anyway about ruining her own non-existent prospects.

I just really like Edith-in the war, she learnt to drive, helped in the hospital.

Mary just swanned in & looked after Matthew!

I loved it when the Captain(?) toasted Edith as she was spoken of so well for the help she was giving.

I can see why Edith dislikes/is jealous of Mary, what I don´t really get is why Mary is/was so contemptuous of Edith.

For example when she wasn´t interested in Strallan, but after dinner made sure she got his attention, even though she had to ignore Matthew to do so.
and the idiot still married her purely to show Edith that men preferred her??

MarthasHarbour · 21/09/2012 14:56

lets not forget Edith's dalliance with the local married farmer eh? Butter wouldnt melt with that one

squoosh · 21/09/2012 15:01

The 'snogging the framer up in the haybarn' storyline was so ridiculous.

squoosh · 21/09/2012 15:01

Farmer.

She may have also snogged a framer, I'm not sure!

MarthasHarbour · 21/09/2012 15:12

squoosh maybe you are referring to the picture framer she probably snogged or something... Wink

she is still a 'fast piece'

Fiderer · 21/09/2012 16:21

It was ridiculous, even allowing for the "war changes things" and "oh now she has a Useful Role to play" guff. The more so because she was snogging ol' puffy legs who nearly died till Saint Isobel saved him from the dropsy.

At least FidGirl insists it was him, I found it hard to tell under the puff and the striped pyjamas.

MamaMary · 21/09/2012 16:22

I've a soft spot for Edith as I'm also the middle child.

limitedperiodonly · 21/09/2012 19:55

Let's not be too harsh on Edith.

Eligible young men were drowning in their own lung fluids like flies in mustard gas.

In her position i could see myself shagging a framer in a hayloft with my eyes shut and Rudolph Valentino in my head.

Fiderer · 21/09/2012 20:19

"I could see myself shagging a framer in a hayloft with my eyes shut and Rudolph Valentino in my head."

That'd be a great one for charades (or "the Game") at the Downton family Christmas get-together.

RuleBritannia · 21/09/2012 20:25

Only two sleeps left now.

jammic · 21/09/2012 20:37

Downton, it's like a big warm fluffy duvet that you don't want to leave

RuleBritannia · 22/09/2012 11:16

It has some prickly bits sticking out though. Only one more sleep.

Animation · 22/09/2012 11:24

... the quill from goose feathers sticking through.

Can anyone hear the theme tune, sing the theme tune!

RuleBritannia · 22/09/2012 12:48

I recognise it so I know it's time to sit down and watch but I wouldn't really call it 'music'.

Angelico · 23/09/2012 20:45

It's almost time... hope it's better this week and has fewer ad breaks!

Chubfuddler · 23/09/2012 21:11

Am loving this so far this week. LOL at the fallen women needing a rest.

Come on Matthew. Harden up.

dementedma · 23/09/2012 21:18

Ooh,poor Mrs hughes

MissMogwi · 23/09/2012 21:31

FFS, Matthew is getting on my wick. Take the ££.

newplan · 23/09/2012 21:35

All the men need to grow a set.

Matthew - stealing, my arse. Take the cash and certainly don't expect everyone to say 'oh my how noble, I'll pack my bags'

Strallen - no you can't still be friends with bobby the knobber if you're not good enough for his daughter.

wintera · 23/09/2012 21:36

Christ - Matthew's changed! Remember in the first series when he didn't want anyone looking after him? Now he's all pissed off cos his tails have been ruined!

dapplegrey · 23/09/2012 21:48

I'm surprised that Lord G considers Sir Anthony's arm to be a reason for him not to marry Edith as in 1920 there must have been many many men who'd been badly wounded in the war, lots of whom would have had worse disabilities.

dementedma · 23/09/2012 21:52

Yeah,Edith makes a good point that all the young men are dead.I think strallan is a sweetie

MissMogwi · 23/09/2012 21:58

Grin at Violet's face!
