DuelingFanjo · 04/09/2012 21:34

The commentry is AWFUL.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 04/09/2012 21:34

I feel sorry for the girl who'd been in care with the sudden turn around of their attitude to her when they found out about her past!

Signet2012 · 04/09/2012 21:35

I think that would be a really good idea. I am a first time mam and although I am pretty confident from 4 months I am totally clueless about newborns.

Put it this way - When I met my new niece two weeks ago I wanted her laying on a pillow in my arms like you do with a child!!!!

Maybe its just me being oversensitive but I think sometimes on this program they are a bit patronizing.

MrsJohnMurphy · 04/09/2012 21:35

The commentary is a bit shit, why he sounded so shocked that somebody would be having a third baby is odd.

5madthings · 04/09/2012 21:35

also watching and annoyed at the midinformation on ci-sleeping and swaddling! grrr they should get their facts right.

sailorsgal · 04/09/2012 21:36

Its also called a maternity nurse but its basically a nanny for newborns who can help in those first few weeks. Or a post natal doula. Help look after other kids, look after mum, etc. I've always cooked and looked after the mums I've worked for. Helped with breastfeeding if needed. Keep on top of the washing. That kind of thing. Smile

Rubirosa · 04/09/2012 21:36

I don't think the problem is swaddling per se, but those babies were overwrapped in blankets, hats on and one of them was next to a heater. But the midwife's advice on overheating vs. swaddling was not very clear. Similarly her advice on "bedsharing" - she mentions sofas being a risk, but doesn't give any safe co-sleeping advice. However maybe that was because all the mums were formula feeding?

FrillyMilly · 04/09/2012 21:37

I do think it would be better for women to stay in hospitals a bit longer post birth but the post natal care is so sparse that there wouldnt be any point.

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/09/2012 21:37

As with everything it certainly pays to do your research. And lordy thats where things like mn come into their own - I found out so much about bf from reading the boards on here.

Pickles77 · 04/09/2012 21:38

I can see she's making a cup of tea in her dressing down-twit!
And the relevance of the lads with football.

Monics stepmum Is lovely

I think "vulnerable babies service" would of been better called something else. To me, there is nothing to say the baby is vulnerable but the mother sounds like she may be. If I was told I was being referred to "vulnerable babies" I would take that as the baby was at risk. When really, there is no need to assume that as yet just because of the girls past. The girl may need more support but thats her not the baby if you know what I mean.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 04/09/2012 21:38

Sailors gal would u mind me asking what area you are in?! You sound amazing!!

crackcrackcrak · 04/09/2012 21:38

I was aghast at the cot death advice. It was an opportunity to highlight how dangerous smoking with babies is Sad

Pickles77 · 04/09/2012 21:39

Thank you sailors

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/09/2012 21:39

I agree Signet - talk about how to worry the expectant mother even more.

DuelingFanjo · 04/09/2012 21:39

I HATE HATE HATE 'baby doctor'
My baby went to the 'baby doctor'

urggh.

TerraNotSoFirma · 04/09/2012 21:40

I was thinking the same duelling, quite patronising.

JambalayaCodfishPie · 04/09/2012 21:40

Having babies.... in their own living rooms Shit, no way. People don't do that? Do they?!?? Hmm

With regards to swaddling - both families she spoke to had swaddled in very thick fleecy blankets. One had it fastened with a peg too. That is dangerous. Swaddling should be for comfort, not heat. IYSWIM.

I was told by my CM on both occasions that the advice was not to swaddle.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 04/09/2012 21:41

My baby went the the paediatrician. Am I special?! Lol

Rubirosa · 04/09/2012 21:41

DP and I were just laughing at "baby doctor" too - when DS was born we were introduced to "Nick the Baby Doctor".

sailorsgal · 04/09/2012 21:41

stacey I'm in Dorset. Smile I don't work very often as have a ds now and there isn't much work in my area.

TerraNotSoFirma · 04/09/2012 21:42

I shouldn't be watching this, I am as broody as hell.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 04/09/2012 21:43

Bugger too far away from me! Maybe I'll look into it a bit more although have some great mates and hopefully they'll rally round (depending how close to Xmas LO turns up!) lol

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 04/09/2012 21:46

Shock at the way that car seat was 'strapped' in

ceeveebee · 04/09/2012 21:46

Stacey a few of my twin mum friends had maternity nurses. One of them travelled down from Up north (newcastle I think) to London for a couple of weeks. So some maternity nurses do travel (usually live in the house). Can PM you her contact details if you want?
