I watched Pride & Prejudice today ( the film version, I know most people hate Keira knightly but I love it) and I have now got North & South lined up for tonight once DS goes to sleep.

What are your favourites?

LadyC I didn't mean the subject just the time that's all; perhaps I still don't know the full meaning of MNisms. Oh those kisses were very sexual IMO and the sense of their being stolen was clear also.

I must admit my ignorance about Twenty Thousand Streets who wrote it?

bronze · 16/06/2012 14:47

I loved bright star too Sad

And lost in Austen was very fun. Wish they would make another, another person into another book would be easy to do

Cartoonjane · 16/06/2012 15:05

Middlemarch from the mid 90 s was great.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 18/06/2012 10:11

ppeatfruit, I thought cross-posting meant that two people posted at the same time either about the same thing, or a question and an answer that then appeared on the board in the wrong order e.g. answer first followed by question. I may be wrong though. We need a really seasoned MNetter to come along and define the term. Smile

Apparently Twenty Thousand Streets ... was based on a book by Patrick Hamilton. I don't know anything about it/him but will be treating myself to the DVD of it and possibly pulling a sickie from work to get time to watch it Grin

ppeatfruit · 19/06/2012 07:39

You are no doubt right ladyC Smile

I've never heard of Patrick Hamilton either is he meant to be good?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 19/06/2012 09:55

No idea! All I know about Twenty Thousand Streets ... is what's been said about it on this thread, but the comments are favourable enough to persuade me to buy and try it.

I love things set in the 1920s too. Can't wait for time to sit and watch it!

ppeatfruit · 19/06/2012 10:06

BTW did you see the Young Victoria? It was on Saturday or Sunday i think. Quite good IMO though i couldn't watch it all; too late for me (it's the hour ahead in Fr. that's annoying).

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 19/06/2012 10:16

No but I saw it when it was on at the flicks; I've had a raging crush on Paul Bettany for over ten years and am practically contractually obligated to go to see everything he's in, even the shite of which there's been quite a lot. Grin

I thought it was a slightly insipid costume-drama-by-numbers, really, but watchable and well acted apart from Prince Albert (can't remember actor's name). And to be honest I wasn't bowled over by Emily Blunt in the lead, although I know she's meant to be one of the Finest Actors of Her Generation etc etc!

ppeatfruit · 19/06/2012 11:37

Which part did Paul Bettany play; Lord Melbourne? he was cute Grin Sorry I don't know him by name.

I was watching Oliver Twist on daytime T.V. Sky arts yesterday Blush and Lindsay Duncan seems fated to play mad bitches doesn't she?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 19/06/2012 11:51

Yes, Melbourne; he was made up to look quite a lot older than he really is (I'm pretty sure Melbourne was in his 40s or even 50s in the period of the film and Paul B is only about 39/40).

Didn't Lindsay Duncan play the artist character in White Heat recently? Not mad exactly, but a bit flaky and 'troubled'.

bronze · 19/06/2012 12:03

It's on I player at the moment and I'm definitely not watching it at the moment as I'm supposed to be doing housework. Definitely not

bronze · 19/06/2012 12:04

Lindsay duncan is brilliant at playing nuts

ppeatfruit · 19/06/2012 12:14

Yes she is bronze Doesn't get much chance to play anything else! I'm supposed to be doing housework as well but i come on here after lunch for a rest Grin

OOOH Paul Bettany YUM I agree LadyC you can see why Vicky fell for him if Lord M. was that gorgeous in RL

Hubba hubba Smile

ppeatfruit · 19/06/2012 12:51

Thanks ladyC But he looks miles better on telly doesn't he? maybe it's the pix! Apart from the mouth that egotistical lady looks nothing like him IMVHO got any toplessGrin of him?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 19/06/2012 13:18

Oops, did I post a pic of someone else by mistake? Fairly sure <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=Tud&sa=X&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1220&bih=670&tbm=isch&prmd=imvnso&tbnid=OLkEVTWq3SfVYM:&imgrefurl=www.dreadcentral.com/news/32858/paul-bettany-talks-legion&docid=GRc5spuMcy_JBM&imgurl=www.dreadcentral.com/img/news/aug09/legionb.jpg&w=550&h=712&ei=6W3gT-isKsPX0QWNx92RDQ&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=347&sig=100905212096207828663&page=1&tbnh=138&tbnw=108&start=0&ndsp=19&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:0,i:108&tx=40&ty=37" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this is of him ...

bronze · 19/06/2012 13:20

Nope that first one was definitely Paul bett...

ppeatfruit · 19/06/2012 17:37

Blimey Paul Bett. as an angel cor!!Grin not sure about the tattoos but he is really lovely shame he's usually in the type of films I don't go out of my way to watch; now HE would 've made an amazing butler in Downton wouldn't he?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 19/06/2012 17:41

Too young to be the butler! I'd like to see him playing his age more, and playing sexier, funnier characters. He was great in Margin Call recently; a suited and booted, sardonic Englishman in New York.

ppeatfruit · 19/06/2012 17:51

Tell me how can i see Margin Call lady? I thought he was a very good actor as well BTW Grin

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 19/06/2012 18:04

It was at the flicks maybe 4-6 months ago so is no doubt out on DVD and/or available to download. It's worth tracking down; apart from being Bettany-porn, it's a good film and rather overlooked, IMO, with terrific performances from a great cast (Zachary Quinto, Stanley Tucci and, surprisingly, Demi Moore come out of it particularly well.)

Clawdy · 19/06/2012 19:35

Persuasion, with Amanda Root as Anne Elliot, was wonderful and very moving.

ppeatfruit · 20/06/2012 09:26

Thanks ladyC. yes back to the thread Grin Was that the T.V. version clawdy? I've come to the conclusion that Austen is such a finely detailed writer that there aren't many T.V. or film versions that capture the subtleties well.

Clawdy · 20/06/2012 18:07

Yes,tv version ppeatfruit ,but not the fairly recent one.
