I use my translate app on my phone for non English speaking ladies. It's fab, I speak in English and the phone speaks in whatever language I ask it to. Woman replies in her language and phone tells it me in English.

My MIL is ace - we don't speak the same language though which helps

whydontwe it could be accent or context - I live abroad and speak the language okay, but when someone says something unexpected it's v hard to switch track and work it out. I'm all in favour of people speaking to me in short sentences with lots of repetition!
