Could you imagine opening your curtains one morning and finding a traveller camp on your kids playground?

Moln · 21/02/2012 21:57

It's possible - my estate is build around a green - though I think there is a official halting site nearby so it's a small possibility.

Harry but the whole program isn't true to its title.

headfairy · 21/02/2012 22:02

They probably had the hen party to fit in with Channel4's filming schedule.

Haziedoll · 21/02/2012 22:28

You would not want to be a girl born into that set-up would you?

WidowWadman · 21/02/2012 22:29

sairygamp · 23/02/2012 22:15

*Sorry to butt in here.
I'm a traveller and this programme is in no way representative of 99% of Traveller culture and tradition.

I've reported the programme and its advertising to ASAS and Ofcom in the last few days, as have many of my friends and family.
It is racist. If you substitute Black/Jewish for Gypsy in My Big Fat... and you'll see what I mean.*

Oh phew, so all that 'trotting stuff was just people acting thank goodness for that.

CuttedUpPear · 24/02/2012 08:52

sairygamp The trotting stuff wasn't acting and you know that I didn't say anything like it.
The programme plays up to racist stereotypes because it doesn't show the wider picture of Traveller life, just concentrates on some extreme behaviours of some individuals and, with no other aspects portrayed, is seen as representative of the culture.

sairygamp · 24/02/2012 10:18

Fair enough - but things that are portrayed obviously do happen?? I read Nick Hornby's response to 'pip' and found it very interesting

CuttedUpPear · 25/02/2012 23:56

Ok.
Say that the TV did a documentary on a couple of families that lived in your street. Maybe they stole cars, mistreated their dogs, whatever.

Now say that all the TV viewers assumed that everyone in your street did the things they did. That means you. And giant posters started appearing reading 'Thieving, animal bashing residents of Sairygamp Street' - back to entertain you some more with their unpleasant habits.

And the people in the local shops, the schools, etc assumed you behave like this and made comments to your children to that effect.
That's how it feels.

Tortington · 26/02/2012 00:02

not read the thread - but....is it only me who thinks this programme is completely racist?

Tortington · 26/02/2012 00:05

bigger-fatter-gypsier-more-racist

porcamiseria · 27/02/2012 17:19

depressing and a bit racist
