sorry - should have read "strong will to succeed"

Of course it's possible for a child to become fluent in a language that the parents don't speak. No one said otherwise. I don't really understand your post Hausfrau

Remember though that William's mum left school early as she was being bullied badly and seems to have had quite a rough time of it through childhood. And the dad, in the first programme before William was born, had the 'Ace' gene that makes him highly competitive/sporty type.

Also James' mum Carol has learning difficulties, and her brother and sister seem to as well. She was in a situation with the violent partner and perhaps couldn't cope or didn't know how to cope? I think she was in total denial about James getting thrown down the stairs, not if both he and Bernie said it happened. I would believe my child first in that instance.

And the twins remind me so much of mine, except for looks, mine aren't blondies!

My children come on either side of the children on Child of Our Time , age wise, so I like to watch it but I find very frustrating, because they introduce all sorts of interesting ideas, but there is never enough time to explore them properly, so it always feels really lightweight.

I thought that William was simply unpleasant and lacking in boundaries. I have never understood parents who advocate the "it will toughen them up" line. Why should children be toughened up? I am sure that Matthew isn't going to look back and think if only my brother had beaten me up, wouldn't life be easy! Very odd, although the mum is obviously not at all happy.

Disagree on the Het thing. I thought that there was lots of really nice interaction going on with her dad, and agree the boarding school thing is about cultural differences - I bet they would have missed her like anything if she had gone.
