Am rather looking forward to seeing the home made bikini for the 'relaxing zen' birth...

Is it just me, or did the midwife and Renae's mum completely miss the fact that Renae and her partner were wanting a quiet birth, little talking and trying to get into the zone?
The midwife and mum talked loudly all the way through the birth! I would have been really cross if my mum and MW had done that.

Angelswings · 12/01/2012 12:41

Nursenic, I agree with your comments about this thread. The fact mners thought she was in to be induced says it all!

Dru77 · 12/01/2012 13:01

Disney lady was on local radio this morning - she said when they both had the earphones in they were listening to music from church.

buterflies · 12/01/2012 13:21

I thought the "disney" couple did brilliantly. Have to admit when I saw the advert for it I was thinking nah it will all go wrong for her, first time mum, bet she ends up having loads of pain relief but was really pleased for her. I don't think they are as dippy as the show portrayed.

Poor Kerry tho. She panicked and instead of having a calm reassuring midwife she was shouted at. I think at that stage she probably needed shouting at but if the midwife has stayed with her in the early stages and gone through some relaxation and breathing techniques she may have calmed down and managed a lot better.
I know when I started panicking quite early on, I was lucky to have a wonderful midwife who stayed with me and helped me calm down to the point that I was almost asleep. Wished she could have been there for the delivery but 23 hrs is asking a bit much of one midwife lol.

I am 31wk pregnant tomo and when they took Kerrys baby off her to get him breathing I cried my eyes out. It brought back too many scary memories of DS birth. I am not too sure if I want to watch it again until after baby is born.

trixie123 · 12/01/2012 13:31

had no idea it was back on!

Acanthus · 12/01/2012 13:32

My experience us that a firm, loud "look at me, stay with me" helped me out of panic. Not panic like Kerry's, but panic because of a fast second birth. I wouldn't dismiss it as a strategy.

Acanthus · 12/01/2012 13:33

And Heather and her husband, and her birth, were lovely. Just lovely, you miserable lot.

bemybebe · 12/01/2012 13:45

They were lovely Grin

Re Kerry's MW Acanthus nobody is suggesting to drop anything, especially short clear instructions during the critical stages, but Kerry started panicking early on, and this strategy clearly was not working on her, yet the mw kept doing it. Kerry really needed to have someone professional and calm and reassuring talking to her between the contractions when she was only 3cm rather than someone shouting at her throughout them.

What is clear, that MW was very good helping the baby out when he got stuck, so well done her!

Flisspaps · 12/01/2012 14:28

I watched OBEM this morning and only came to the thread just now.

I LOVED the 'Disney' couple, - there's a lot to be said for fear inhibiting birth if you look into hypnobirthing/natal hypnotherapy and read Ina May Gaskin's stuff, so in a way, perhaps ignorance really was bliss. Either way, whether it be luck or otherwise, that birth seemed to fit in with their whole 'perfect life' ethos, they were lovely to each other and he was so supportive. Not like some of the dickheads that some of the women have as their birth partners.

I really felt for Kerry - having had a forceps delivery myself I found myself panicking a bit when that MW said if you have a bad time first time round, you've got no hope for the second. I was going to show DH this episode right up until the shoulder dystocia happened - the comments about a bad second birth following a bad first birth are one thing, I think if he saw the SD then he'd be forcing me into the car to the CLU when I go into labour with this one, regardless of my plans.

Angelswings I understand exactly what you mean about Renee's mum. She was so clearly excited and that was understandable, but it was almost as if Renee and her DH didn't get a look in - they were all calm and quiet and the mum and the MW were yapping on and then once baby was being cleaned etc, Mum was over there and the MWs backside was in the way so Renee and DH couldn't see the baby. Their kiss made it seem such a private moment, and yet there was her mum and the 2MWs wittering on and on and on in the corner.

Flisspaps · 12/01/2012 14:28

Renae, even!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 12/01/2012 14:38

Just finished watching this with DD 10.8.
We both loved Frazzle man and thought he was great. Not so sure about bikini man (Disney) but DD decided she'd have a water birth when the time comes.
Loved Renae and her man. I knew she had PCOS, as did DD. She said to me 'that poor lady has what you have, she's all spotty and fat' Hmm.
I'll def be watching it next week.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 12/01/2012 15:14

These threads are just about the bitchiest, most judgemental things I have ever read on this forum! Shock

kreecherlivesupstairs · 12/01/2012 15:16

Seriously? you aren't reading enough then Saggy.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 12/01/2012 15:24

Of course they arent saggy. There are some dodgy comments but its mostly awwwwwww look at the beautiful baby.

They also lead to interesting discussions about poster's birth experiences.
They also help women who are pg and would otherwise be watching OBEM alone and bloody terrified.

Kayano · 12/01/2012 15:29

raises hand

Yes agree with MrsDV

This thread helped me so much even this
Morning and I had such a nice talk with Nursenic and felt much better Smile

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 12/01/2012 18:15

Hmm I was party to several of these in the last series. The one with the young mum and the druggy type partner was particularly horrible. And last weeks wasn't much better!

nursenic · 12/01/2012 20:24

That's really kind of you to say so, Kayano. Glad the comments from people helped.

MrsChemist · 12/01/2012 21:37

Flisspaps, I had a difficult first birth, but the second one was a breeze. For me, it was because I knew what to expect, and could plan accordingly.

I had an amazing water birth. Not as amazing as Disney couple (who were ace BTW) but still brilliant. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Moobee · 13/01/2012 12:34

I watched this last night as mumsnet loved the waterbirth. Obviously very inspiring as I stood up afterwards and my waters promptly broke. (I'm 40+5 so that's not a bad thing). Now how do I get labour started?!

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 13/01/2012 12:40

ooh Moobee, won't be long, most of the time womens bodies know what to do without any help.
Stay active and let gravity help.

Enjoy! it is the most amazing thing in the world Smile

Moobee · 13/01/2012 13:00

Thank you! :) We're going for a walk and making sure we get lots of sleep in case it kicks off overnight. Induction tomorrow morning if no action by then.
