I'm not wise; just a sad (old?) Corrie fan who has been watching (with a few gaps) since the 1970s.

When you have characters going back so far, the current writers need to work with the back stories, not ignore them. (I mean characters in the soap going back that far - and viewers like me who just know the community).

AmIthatbad · 23/12/2011 20:08

I haven't seen tonight, will watch later on catch up.

What I wondered though, was that I don't know anyone that thinks Traceyluv adds any value to the show or any storylines, but there must be those that think she is a wonderful addition to plots, and the cast in general, or else why would she still be in it?

EdithWeston · 23/12/2011 20:37

Also I've just realised another balls up in the execution of the plot lines: at 5 months pregnant, it would legally be a stillbirth, not a miscarriage. So would there not be a legal certificate with date and time (harder to hide from Steve?). And there would certainly be quite different onwards support than has been evident.

Then again, the producers must know they are just peddling piles of steaming crap. When there is a realistic stillbirth story (eg Kevin and Alison's baby) they put up helplines at the end of the programme. They didn't see the need for this - evidence even they see it is not realistic?

EdithWeston · 23/12/2011 20:37

"Becky should get the police involved"

DigitalSpy has spoilers.

ledkr · 23/12/2011 20:47

OOOO,I just looked at that, very interesting. When is the Sally Webster rape story going to happen then?
God i wish giving birth had been that easy.

Panzee · 23/12/2011 20:48

Speaking of Digital Spy, come join us on the Suspension of Reality thread for a good old rant. :o

EdithWeston · 23/12/2011 20:57

panzee: thanks for linking that thread - there's an awful lot of it!

I think one poster has hit an important nail on the head: "There's little ability to let a story line grow nowadays, it's just all set up - reveal, set up - reveal".

LineRunner · 24/12/2011 16:01

I've also been watching Corrie since the 1970s.

I think my favourite characters were Mavis and Derek. And the canteen of cutlery.

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 24/12/2011 18:56

One word for you all: Blanche. The absolute best they ever had.

AmIthatbad · 24/12/2011 19:45

Blanche............................Xmas Grin. I want to be her when I grow up.

InExcelsisDeo · 24/12/2011 19:54

Blanche at the AA meeting. Classic.

LineRunner · 24/12/2011 20:41

Oh yes, Blanche. Yay.

LineRunner · 26/12/2011 20:39

Becky has been to a sympathetic policewoman. She even said, 'Ta.' Classic.

EdithWeston · 26/12/2011 21:18

I'm watching on ITV+1.

They have done 2 things right - the relationship between Roy's mother and Becky (makes Becky's imminent departure ever more regrettable); and the brilliant bit from Gail when she threw a book at Davd's groin and then just told him to be glad he'd been a cheapskate and not given her the hardback.

LineRunner · 26/12/2011 22:24

The Deidre-Tracey 'I'm your mam, Traceyluv' relationship is becoming interesting again, poss?

EdithWeston · 26/12/2011 22:43

Are the police likely to make enquiries at the hospital to establish if the miscarriage could have been caused by the injuries in the fall? Just as the basic establishing the ascertainable facts? If so, that blows it straight out of the water.

But the "miscarriage" is a very poorly executed storyline - firstly as Tracey must have been about 26 weeks so it would legally have been a stillbirth with quite different handling, secondly as there is no way anyone have been in and out so quickly, and thirdly as she is a transplant recipient she'd have required close (probably inpatient) monitoring to recalibrate her anti-rejection drugs (which is a centre of excellence matter, and I'd have expected that to take some time to settle).

LineRunner · 27/12/2011 01:08

Police [and fire and paramedic] procedural sadly lacking also in Eastenders tonight.

EdithWeston · 27/12/2011 04:40

I think there's a thread elsewhere about EE, where you are much more likely to find viewers who will know what's going on in that soap.

LineRunner · 27/12/2011 16:24

Sorry, it was late, I was having a drink, EE just fell into my head ......

Anyway.

David's wife Kylie seems to be becoming almost human.

I have noticed this before, ghastly characters morphing into good 'uns over time. Is this a deliberate portrayal of the morphic resonance of the Street, or just poor plotting?

FrigidHare · 27/12/2011 18:38

I remember hating the Battersbys when they first arrived on the street and then they sort of morphed into likeable characters too.

LineRunner · 27/12/2011 19:08

Exactly, Frigid. One minute Curly Watts is banging on their walls and complaining to Emily, the next thing Leanne and Toyah are the guardian angels of the Street.

lozster · 27/12/2011 19:21

Contrast tracy's night in hospital after losing 5 month old twins with Leanne's week in hospital after her miscarriage when I seem to recall she was only a few weeks pregnant.

Plus I have to mention the birth of 'Joseph'. Is there no one on Corry who doesn't give birth in a matter of minutes?? When do we get to see a 3 day labour?

EdithWeston · 27/12/2011 22:15

And sorry to you too, linerunner: I actually meant just to point out existence of another thread, not sound as if I was ticking off! (Also posting during insomnia, which never helps!)

Kylie I think is showing promise as a proper Corrie character (now they've got beyond the simply appalling early storyline with Max), and I do like the way she is a match for Gail. And her rapprochement with Becky is welcome too: I just wish this has been the story that was going ahead. She could then retract her statement to SW about Becky's unfitness to adopt and We might then have seen the Rovers staying a MacDonald pub with a family there.

The Battersby morphing was OK as it was the work of years, not a personality transplant in a handful of episodes. I'd love to see Spider back on the Street. But not whilst the quality of plotlines is so low.

Are spoilers welcome on this thread? For we are about to be "treated" to another round of tedium with Carla, and a shedload more improbable Stella. Ugh.
