TERRIBLE TV sitcoms of the 80s and 90s

I can't find the remote control - have just watched Keeping Up Appearances and now Allo Allo is on.

What a crock of shit.

Terribly contrived situations with 'hilarious' consequences.

Patricia Routledge is a great actress but the canned laughter, slobby family and just everything in it is so dire.

And Allo Allo - I don't get it. Who thought it would be funny to have a comedy about german occupation and the French resistance? Made by the BBC? With canned laughter? And Madonna with a big boobies? Were people complete divs back then?

Allo Allo was fucking awful. Words fail me.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/11/2011 17:22

Oh... I love both of those. Yes, they're contrived, formulaic and over-reliant on catch-phrases and stereotypes but they were billed as early evening family entertainment so the comedy was never going to be edgy or controversial. Had to be stuff you could watch with granny and no-one get embarrassed. FWIW, my colleagues in Belgium think Allo Allo it just about the funniest thing that ever graced a TV screen.... think it's because every nationality gets the piss taken out of them in it except Belgium...

thestringcheesemassacre · 03/11/2011 17:23

Did you ever see the american one called "highway to heaven". Admittedly not a comedy but just the most BORING thing ever. This man drifted from town to town being charitable under instructions from the man above. Yawn.

No bloody Friends or Frasier when we were kids.

Mind Your Language
Robin's Nest
The one that Robin's Nest span off from.
On the Buses
Terry and June (god I loved that then tho)

Shelley

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/11/2011 17:25

BTW... Allo Allo was actually a spoof of a drama series called 'Secret Army'. The cafe owner, the sinister gestapo, the resistance fighters in the brown macs and ankle socks, the British airmen that never get home ... they're all there in the original.

cyb · 03/11/2011 17:25

Citizen Smith was pretty dire, as was The Liver Birds

BREAD! Did anyone EVER laugh at bread? 'Avaliiiiine'

bunnyspoiler · 03/11/2011 17:25

They're all pretty awful when you watch them back. Even Only Fools and Horses wouldn't work today.

DeeScent · 03/11/2011 17:25

We watched a few episodes of To the Manor Born recently and the plotting was just so painfully predictable and thin.

OTOH also watched the whole of the The Good Life again and I just never tire of that because the acting is so good.

cyb · 03/11/2011 17:25

My 10 yr old son woudl think Allo Allo the funniest thing he had ever seen

complexnumber · 03/11/2011 17:26

But the 70s were worse. What about Love Thy Neighbour, On The Buses and Mind Your Language? I imagine a rise in feminism in the 70s was a direct reaction to dire sitcoms.

TheCountessOlenska · 03/11/2011 17:27

Birds of a Feather - so depressing!

What was the one with a McGann brother and Honor Blackman??

cyb · 03/11/2011 17:27

Terry and June was completely BEIGE. the sets, the clothes

What was that awful one in with Donald Sinden and Windsor Davis?

SOLO with Felicity Kendall was dire

Itsjustafleshwound · 03/11/2011 17:27

2.4 children

cyb · 03/11/2011 17:28

Girls on Top

southeastastra · 03/11/2011 17:29

we loved mind your language

allo allo was good! good moaning

KatieMiddIeton · 03/11/2011 17:29

The Upper Hand! I loved that. Saw part of an episode recently. It was pitful.

I still love Keeping Up Appearances and Allo Allo.

recall · 03/11/2011 17:29

butterflies

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 03/11/2011 17:29

I to this day find Herr Flick from Allo Allo deeply amusing. Blush

But most of them are awful in hindsight, especially Birds of a Feather and Terry and June. I love It Ain't Half Hot Mum though, and The Good Life, but agree that the latter has stood the test of time largely because of the acting and the likeability of everyone involved.

BananaChoc · 03/11/2011 17:30

Loved Rhoda.

Loved just good friends with Paul Nicholas.

Hated Howards way.

Remember one with the lovely Hannah Gordon called Telfords exchange? It was awful.

KatieMiddIeton · 03/11/2011 17:30

Ab Fab was a bit shit. IMHO.

cyb · 03/11/2011 17:30

Good moaning to you too southeast

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 03/11/2011 17:30

Oh, 2.4 Children was DIRE! Real lowest common denominator stuff.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/11/2011 17:31

No no no no no no no, you're all wrong. Bread was pure shite, and Terry and June...and the Upper Hand but the others were great. It's today's tv that's terrible!
