Bloody mum rang to ask me about how much Internet she can use before it's full. Don't ask.

Why did bates have to leave?? Aaargh missed crucial bit!

LadyMontdore · 26/09/2011 17:51

Enjoyed it, but it's nothing like as good as series 1. It was totally unclear as to whether the events took place over one weekend, a few weeks or several months. Also some really bad lines and odd bits of plot. Like the bit with the cook and the cowardice nephew - a tragic event but didn't really add anything to the story. And why tell her and then tell her not to tell her sister, that was cruel!
All the chatting to the servants and mixing in together is just a bit too much of an unsubtle way of trying to explain that class barriers may have become slightly less rigid.

LadyMontdore · 26/09/2011 17:53

And Anna said 'that won't happen' or similar, such modern phrases.
And yes Lady G is v annoying.

LeBOF · 26/09/2011 17:59

Lady G's eyebrows seem to be engaged in a race with Edith's drawers to see which will hit the ground first.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 26/09/2011 18:21

DD pointed out that Cora is grinny. I think it sums her up quite nicely.
Will be back with more incisive thoughts tomorrow.

floosiemcwoosie · 26/09/2011 18:34

I havent watched last nights yet. Getting a bit of a mixed review Sad

Northernlurker · 26/09/2011 18:44

Cousin Isobel asked Thomas to 'cover' for Nurse Crawley - as if! Apalling use of language. Julian Fellowes is so LAZY about using appropriate language fr the time.
I mean how long does it take to type 'Thomas, please take care of the patients whilst Nurse Crawley is at dinner'?
Loved the Toad of Toad hall lin - but Maggie S is now a parody of herself - which as she's always played the character as a parody anyway is all getting rather complicated!

GetAwayFromHerYouBitch · 26/09/2011 18:48

NorthernLurker - it's so surprising. When you compare that to Gosford Park - which was so accurate in its dialogue, it doesn't seem like the same writer. Sloppy

WhipMeIndiana · 26/09/2011 20:47

hmmm. slightly disappointed lasy night;
think Edith probably wouldve snogged the farmer as she hasnt had any male attention since the old geezer, suddenly she' s working her butt off and the farmer is telling her how lovely and fresh she is, the farmers wife was cast well with her downtrodden little face, bless her.
Cora is always manipulated SO easily by Obrien, that's started to annoy me.
Thomas was v sinister when he first came back, Ethel fancied him-he's a role model of how to escape service- he's going to manage the whole downton hospital isn't he- yikes.
would the grand dame really have said 'that little blonde piece'? she isnt even blonde- more ginger

WhipMeIndiana · 26/09/2011 20:49

I prefer it without Bates ; Lord G overacted the shouting at the other guy though; then ridiculously apologised for being cross. he has become a pointless grump, hasnt he. and why can't he just go to bloody war? if he wants to so much, theyd just send him, surely

munumuma · 26/09/2011 21:31

Has anyone pointed out that it is rubbish and the dialogue is laughable yet?

CristinadellaPizza · 26/09/2011 21:36

diddl - if you can drive a car, you can't necessarily drive a tractor. I know because I have a tractor-driving certificate

It's twaddle but entertaining twaddle. The sound was really out of synch which wasn't helping the clumsy dialogue at all

scarlettlips · 26/09/2011 22:29

I've had a thought....bear with me Blush

This week we saw Lavina and Sir Richard in the garden...clearly they know each other and it was getting heated.

I think Lavina works / or did work for Sir Richard....The newspaper is trying to uncover a story on Lady Mary. Lavina was sent to work on Matthew in order to find out as much a possible. However she's gone rogue and fallen in love with him. Sir Richard found out when Matthew and Lavina become exchanged and set out to woo Lady Mary himself in order to get a story!!! {{shock horror}}

I also think Sir Richard might have something to do with Mrs Bates, but frankly i'm be stretching on that point.

Wanna think??

missmogwi · 26/09/2011 23:00

Good effort ScarletlipsGrin

Good theory. But would Lavinia have worked per-say? I don't think nice young laydee's worked on newspapers. Although there are lots of things on there which are not strictly true, so maybe.
I think she and Sir wotsit are fortune hunters. Although his proposal to Mary was hardly the stuff of hearts and flowers was it! Grin

I always used to like Cora, but now I can only notice the wide-eyed expression! Thanks you lot.

I think the boundaries have always been a bit more blurred with them than in a typical family of the time, possibly because Cora's american? I mean, last series she was in the servants' hall a couple of times, and they seemed quite relaxed with all the servants.

I think it's sweet how Carson has a soft spot for Lady Mary, I don't think some of the other servants are that fond of her.

But agree, some of that dialogue was clumsy. I did have a little chuckle about what Lang's hands could do though...

harrietthespook · 26/09/2011 23:15

Well, it all makes sense and sounds loads less silly the second time around. Can't quite work out why - I was convinced it was...well irretrievable.

Animation · 27/09/2011 04:11

"Is it my imagination or has Bates' jaw got a bit podgier?"

Yes, Brendon Coyle who plays Bates is only 47 - but looks older to me.

Animation · 27/09/2011 04:16

"The dinner party when Lord Strallon(?) was there & Mary wanted nothing to do with him-until Edith started talking to him.

Even ignoring Matthew-who she wasn´t interested in until he "rescued" Sybil at a speech(?)

She wants all the aatention whether she likes the person or not. (imo)

"

But I think Mary has reformed now and become a better person.

CheerfulYank · 27/09/2011 04:19

I am so jealous of everyone who doesn't have to wait ages to watch it!

SoupDragon · 27/09/2011 09:24

"diddl - if you can drive a car, you can't necessarily drive a tractor."

It may be that, back then, there wasn't a huge difference between them though.

CristinadellaPizza · 27/09/2011 09:25

That's very true soupy :o

floosiemcwoosie · 27/09/2011 10:20

William isnt going to come home is he?

issynoko · 27/09/2011 10:31

Let's hope not.

vicks71 · 27/09/2011 11:09

I found this episode quite disjointed too. They are racing through the years aren't they.

I seem to have developed quite a crush on Branson. I want him and Sybil to get it on but fear that they are doomed. I don't want her with Matthew - I like both characters but don't want them together. Right, off to find myself an irish chauffeur....

Northernlurker · 27/09/2011 12:20

William is definately done for. Look at the war memorials - a lot of people died. So far we've had Lady sybil weeping over folks we've never met, Mrs Patmore's nephew and that's it. Thomas is now 'safe' in the hospital, Matthew is obviously destined to make it - William HAS to die. There's going to be some fun with Branson too. He's got CO written all over him. I'm hoping he and Lady S can elope to France to drive an ambulance.

harrietthespook · 27/09/2011 12:36

I really don't think Matthew and Mary will get it onnnn in the end you know.
