The original is Danish, not Swedish!

TheFarSide · 11/07/2011 10:15

OK, seen it on catch up. I can't tell if I like it or not as I spent the whole 90 mins comparing it to the original. It's impossible to watch with fresh eyes.

I thought bits of it were well done BUT it seems to have lost the sense of whodunnit suspense.

TheFarSide · 11/07/2011 10:16

I'm watching the old series of Wallander on BBC4 and that's giving me my Scandinavian fix for now.

muminlondon · 11/07/2011 21:06

I did watch it - didn't think it was as good as the Danish version but probably OK if you hadn't seen the original. Don't like the male police officer (Homer? Meyer in the Danish version).

Am now not sure whether to watch the rest. Especially because it is made by Murdoch's Fox TV studios.

aloiseb · 14/07/2011 00:56

Oh dear, muminlondon, you have given me another reason not to like it!

Actually I did like it, a bit, and I will probably carry on watching it because:

1)it is such a strange sensation, seeing nearly-Lund and nearly-Theis etc etc (NOT nearly Pernille though, her acting I think is shockingly overdone and she can't do the starey eyes) carrying on in nearly-English, (could still do with subtitles for "Meyer")

  1. I quite like the Troels-not-alike. Sorry everyone. And this time I might actually properly "get" the political bits.....Blush

  2. The little children are delightfully sassy, poor things. (In Denmark do they really run off and play in their rooms with so little argument?)

  3. I need to find out who did it (again)

  4. It's still raining! So comforting.

They seem to be changing a few bits - have we had our handprints up the wall moment already? Wonder if the new killer is connected to the school. Any unexplained plasters, anyone?

z1rconia · 14/07/2011 20:34

It looks as though I'm lucky to have missed the original series. I've been gripped by the US version, without having a comparison. To have watched the 13 episodes back-to-back,I was just a little disappointed at the weak ending. Is it different from the Danish?

culturemulcher · 14/07/2011 21:26

ooooohhhh Sad

I'm up to the first ad break, ep2. It's just not really doing it, is it? I just can't shake the feeling that I'm watching the X-files (which I didn't watch).

I miss Lund!

muminlondon · 15/07/2011 20:09

OK so I watched episode 2 - I don't think my boycotting Fox TV at this point will have a massive impact! I really miss Lund too. And I miss the stillness and vivid blue and red colours coming out of the darkness - too much brown, dull greys and beige and plinky plonky incidental music (at least last week it was the exact Danish music).

I am still curious to see how the plot will differ though - very few differences so far. The script was weaker this week - I think you can see the join between the pilot episode and rest of the series.

Wolfgirl · 15/07/2011 20:42

I agree... something not right, but I'm not eloquent enough to say what! Not got the bite or suspense that the Danish one had. Characters are quite flimsy imo. dissapointing, but I guess I'll keep watching. Sad

TheFarSide · 15/07/2011 23:43

I thought I'd missed an episode - it's moving too fast. It's completely lost the atmosphere of the original!

Stokey38 · 16/07/2011 10:49

Really don't like it and stopped watching after 1 episode. So disappointing. Have it on good authority they are repeating the original killing in August and the Killing 2 will be shown straight after. Can't wait.

aloiseb · 17/07/2011 22:18

After watching that travesty of a second episode, I have removed the programme from my list. They have replaced the actors with "ACTORS" and the script is now unrecognisable. Very disappointing.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 18/07/2011 09:58

Oh dear, I'm quite enjoying it Grin. BUT I didn't watch the Danish one, so maybe that's it. Once the US version has finished I'll definitely be checking out the original. Quite like the dingy aesthetic so was surprised to read here that there are more vivid colours in the original. Who is the attractive bloke in the Danish one you're all talking about? Lund's/Linden's sidekick?

culturemulcher · 18/07/2011 19:39

The one we're all drooling over talking about is he of the chiseled cheekbones Troles, the politician trying to get elected. At first he didn't do it for me, but then he took his shirt off then he kind of grew on me.

Hmmm. On that pictorial evidence he doesn't do anything for me either, but perhaps if I watched him in the show ...

MissPenteuth · 21/07/2011 11:52

LadyClarice I'm the same, missed the Danish one and quite liking this one. We're downloading it rather than watching on C4, since it's all aired in the US, and we're up to episode 9 now.

I have heard that there was much outcry/disappointment over the ending though, when it aired in the US.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 21/07/2011 15:39

Did they change the ending then? I am definitely looking out the Danish one once this has finished. Glad to be watching them this way round though, if it's true and the Danish one is better.

MissPenteuth · 21/07/2011 17:09

I think (and it may or may not be true in this case) that often people tend to prefer whichever version they see first. Once you've seen it portrayed in a certain way, seen the characters played by certain actors, you can't imagine it being done any other way and are bound to compare any other version unfavourably.

Either way, I'm almost tempted to watch the four remainign episodes back-to-back with DH this evening. That would be crazy though, right?

PedigreeChump · 21/07/2011 20:53

Hmmm. I'm watching the US one but just on normal telly, if I'm around. It's not a patch on the original Danish.

Watching the original was like sipping a glass of something rich and bittersweet and exceptionally more-ish. The US version is like drinking some slightly warm cheap wine. Luckily i'm not too fussy Wink

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 22/07/2011 11:16

MissPenteuth, well, did you? How were they?

noddyholder · 22/07/2011 22:15

When is it on? My ds went to a sleepover thing last night and they were all watching re runs of it and apparently all saying the ginger woman looks like me! have had 3 comments from other people too but have be==never seem it!

MissPenteuth · 23/07/2011 12:02

LadyClarice I watched two, and still have the last two episodes to watch. Will watch them tonight and let you know :)

ChristinedePizan · 23/07/2011 12:05

It's on at 9pm on Thursdays noddy. That's a real compliment - she's a very attractive woman IMO

limitedperiodonly · 27/07/2011 17:59

I didn't watch the original. Enjoying it.

Watching episode 3 now on iPlayer and noticed Alan Dale's in it. He's in everything.
